
5 projects from Oman qualify for London International Youth Science Forum
Out of 430 research projects submitted in various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, 30 met the competition's eligibility criteria. Following a rigorous evaluation, the top five projects were selected to represent Oman at LIYSF 2025.
Among the selected researchers is Hala al Zaabi, whose project focuses on the dual treatment of waste leachate using date seed tannins and advanced oxidation technology.
Al Muntasir al Maamari qualified with a project on AI-supported green hydrogen production from mesquite trees and industrial waste.
Saif al Hashar's project, titled Anfay , is an AI-powered plastic classification tool. Zainab al Maharbi qualified with Nadeem , a platform designed to support children with autism and their parents. Dima al Maawali's project introduces Oman's first AI-powered digital platform to identify damaged water pipes.
The selected projects were evaluated by a specialised panel comprising experts from Sultan Qaboos University, the University of Buraimi, the Global College of Engineering and Technology, and the Military Technological College.
Abeer al Jabri, Research Capacity Building Specialist at the ministry, noted that LIYSF has empowered more than 22,000 students globally since its inception in 1959. Oman's participation has steadily grown over the years, with 817 applicants since 2016, 123 shortlisted projects, and 43 final representatives.
The forum aims to foster international scientific collaboration, expose young researchers to cutting-edge advancements, and develop innovation skills through direct engagement with global experts.

SQU team creates low-emission alternative to traditional bricks
Muscat – A team of students from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has developed a sustainable construction brick made entirely from local natural materials, as part of an effort to reduce the environmental impact of the building sector in Oman. Named Envibrick, the product is positioned as a low-emission alternative to traditional bricks. The student-led company behind Envibrick said the product meets key environmental needs specific to Oman, while helping lower carbon emissions. The bricks are lightweight, salt-resistant and provide high thermal insulation, reducing energy consumption in buildings. These are also insect-repellent, adding a health benefit to their environmental and cost advantages. Halima bint Khamis al Fajrani, CEO of Envibrick, said the team conducted extensive testing at the university's laboratories using specialised equipment, with results carefully documented throughout the development process. One of the main technical challenges was the initial weight of the brick, which the team overcame by replacing heavy components with lighter alternatives without compromising strength or quality. Work is ongoing to finalise the formulation and secure a patent for the product. Once the final mix is approved, the team plans to integrate 3D printing into production to meet modern construction requirements more efficiently. Envibrick recently won the Best Marketing and Promotional Idea Award at the Sultan Qaboos University Science Festival Exhibition and ranked among the top three student industrial companies. The team also participated in the Injaz Oman competition, which promotes student entrepreneurship. The startup aims to expand into the Gulf market, where demand for sustainable construction materials is growing.

Earthquake recorded in Arabian Sea
Muscat: An earthquake was recorded in the Arabian Sea on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University said. A statement issued online by the EMC said: "An earthquake in the Arabian Sea with a magnitude of 5.3, at 2.02 pm MCT and at a depth of 10 km has been recorded. The earthquake was recorded 235 km away from Salalah."

Oman advances work on national biotech strategy
Muscat – Oman has taken a key step towards shaping its National Biotechnology Strategy with the launch of an international tender to appoint a specialised consultancy firm to guide the initiative. At its third meeting held on Sunday, the Biotechnology Supervisory Committee reviewed progress made since its previous session, including completion of preparatory work required to initiate the strategy. The meeting was chaired by H E Dr Rahma al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI) floated the tender via the electronic platform of Authority for Projects, Tenders and Local Content. The consultancy will be responsible for reviewing relevant laws and regulations, identifying strategic priorities, drafting a financial plan, and proposing an executive roadmap for implementation. It will also recommend governance improvements and mechanisms for periodic review, with the strategy expected to cover major biotechnology domains including red, green and white applications. Firms with 'Excellent' or 'First' vendor ratings are invited to submit bids by July 25. Dr Kawthar al Balushi, Director of the National Biotechnology Strategy Project, briefed committee members on the timeline and activities for the next phase. Coinciding with the committee meeting, a cooperation programme was signed to provide support for the strategy's preparation. The agreement brings together MoHERI, Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit and Oman India Fertiliser Company.
