Al-Mashat: Empowering Women and Enhancing Their Role Is a Top Priority for the State
Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, participated in the activities of the 9th edition of the Aswan International Women's Film Festival (AIWFF), which was held in Aswan Governorate.
The festival was attended by Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, the European Union Ambassador to Egypt, Major General Ismail Kamal, Governor of Aswan, a number of ambassadors, artists, and civil society organizations.
In her speech, H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat emphasized that the festival represents a unique celebration of women's voices, artistic creativity, and cultural leadership. The Minister commended its role as a driver of women's empowerment efforts, being the first film festival in Egypt dedicated to shedding light on women's issues and honoring their success stories, in addition to its support for female filmmakers in Egypt and the Arab region.
H.E. Minister Al-Mashat pointed out the importance of the specialized training workshops organized by the festival, led by a selection of the most prominent professionals in the industry.
These workshops contribute to opening new horizons for young people and equipping them with the necessary skills for filmmaking, which enhances Aswan's role as a vibrant cultural center that reflects Egyptian identity.
In the same context, H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat reiterated that the festival embodies the state's commitment to achieving gender equality and comprehensive development, in line with Egypt's Vision 2030, which places the cultural, social, and economic empowerment of women at the heart of its priorities. This is also aligned with the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030, approved by H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which is based on four main pillars: political empowerment, economic empowerment, social empowerment, and protection.
H.E. Minister Al-Mashat also highlighted the National Human Rights Strategy, launched in 2021, and its role in promoting the principles of equality and non-discrimination, ensuring women's full participation in public life, and addressing gender-based violence.
H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat added that through partnership with the United Nations system, and under the umbrella of the Strategic Partnership Cooperation Framework between Egypt and the United Nations 2023-2027, Egypt is working to expand women's access to education, decent work, leadership positions, and protection from violence.
The Minister noted the progress made in the field of empowerment, pointing out that Egyptian women currently occupy 25% of the seats in Parliament and hold four ministerial portfolios, in addition to the initiatives being implemented, such as the "Closing the Gender Gap Accelerator" in cooperation with the World Economic Forum, which brings together more than 100 companies to support women's economic participation.
H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat reviewed the Ministry's efforts in providing development financing that takes gender issues into account in the education, health, and small enterprise development sectors, alongside a number of qualitative initiatives such as "Hayah Karima," "EU-Tamken," and the "Safe Work Environment for Women in the Tourism Sector" project in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, and supporting education reform in partnership with the World Bank.
H.E. Minister Al-Mashat concluded her speech by affirming that storytelling is the essence of cultural and societal change. She praised the role of the Aswan Festival in giving women a space for expression, promoting creativity, and redefining concepts of leadership and artistic excellence.
Within the framework of the festival's activities, a delegation from the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, the European Union, and a number of relevant entities visited the Kom Ombo electricity production station in Aswan, the "Dawi" camp at the Aswan Secondary School, in addition to the "Drinking Water Management" program, as well as a field visit to small and micro enterprises funded by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency in cooperation with the French Development Agency.

Egypt's Senate elections to kick off on Monday nationwide
Egyptian voters will head to the ballot boxes nationwide on Monday and Tuesday to choose their representatives for the upcoming session of the Senate from among 428 candidates. From 9 AM to 9 PM, eligible Egyptian voters will head to 8,286 polling stations across all governorates, according to the National Elections Authority (NEA). A total of 9,500 judges from the State Lawsuits Authority and the Administrative Prosecution Authority will oversee the Senate elections, supervising subcommittees nationwide. Notably, 2,500 of these judges are women, marking a significant milestone for female representation in judicial electoral oversight. In a notable step toward inclusivity, the NEA has introduced ballots in both sign language and Braille, enabling visually and hearing-impaired voters to cast their votes independently for the first time. Heads of subcommittees have been instructed to assist with requests while ensuring the secrecy and integrity of the voting process. Egyptians abroad concluded their voting on Saturday at 136 polling stations across 117 countries. According to the NEA, 428 candidates are competing for individual seats, including 186 independents and 242 affiliated with political parties. Under the list-based system, a single electoral list—The National List for the Sake of Egypt—is running unopposed in all designated constituencies. The Senate was reinstated following the 2019 constitutional referendum. Under the 2022 amendments to the electoral law, the chamber now comprises 300 members: two-thirds elected by direct public vote and one-third appointed by the president. At least 10 percent of seats are reserved for women. Preliminary figures show that four political parties—Mostaqbal Watan (Nation's Future), the Unified Front, Homat Watan (Protectors of the Nation), and the People's Republican Party—are collectively fielding approximately 303 individual candidates. Opposition parties such as the Justice Party, the Egyptian Democratic Party, and the Reform and Development Party are also participating in the individual race with their own nominees. The National Unified List, the sole party list in the elections, is led by Mostaqbal Watan and represents a coalition of 12 political parties. Mostaqbal Watan is fielding 44 candidates, followed by Homat Watan with 19, and the National Front with 12. The remaining participating parties—including the People's Republican Party, Egyptian Democratic Party, Reform and Development Party, Justice Party, Wafd Party, Tagammu Party, Generation's Will Party, Freedom Party, and Congress Party—are each represented by five or fewer candidates on the list. Final results will be announced on 12 August. If a runoff is required, campaigning will resume on the same day the first-round results are announced. Appeals against the NEA's announcement must be submitted within 48 hours, with the final deadline being Thursday, 14 August. The Supreme Administrative Court will rule on any appeals between 15 and 24 August, with the electoral silence period for the runoff beginning on 24 August. Runoff voting for Egyptians abroad will take place on Monday and Tuesday, 25 and 26 August, followed by domestic runoff voting on Wednesday and Thursday, 27 and 28 August. Egypt Officially Raises Public Sector Minimum Wages
Taarek Refaat Egypt's Official Gazette has published Decree, signed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, introducing amendments to the public sector minimum wage framework effective July 1, 2025. The decree updates key provisions of the 2019 wage legislation to reflect new wage thresholds for government employees and workers at public economic authorities. The move comes amid broader economic reforms and cost-of-living concerns, with the government seeking to bolster real incomes across all employment grades in the public sector. The calculation will exclude certain special allowances such as remote-area bonuses, risk allowances, or non-cash benefits, while regular bonuses and collective financial advantages will be averaged into the monthly wage for assessment. This incentive system aims to harmonize wage fairness across ministries and public entities while maintaining eligibility conditions aligned with the Civil Service Law and other relevant public finance legislation. The amendments were adopted following Cabinet approval and a comprehensive legal review, as referenced in the decree's legal preamble, which cites Egypt's Unified Public Finance Law and recent Law, which governs public sector bonuses and incentives. The Egyptian government has incrementally raised the minimum wage in recent years as inflationary pressures and currency fluctuations have affected purchasing power. The current adjustment follows multiple prior increases, with the most recent benchmark set in 2024 at EGP 10,000 for many categories. Egypt, Turkey, Greece FMs address Gaza humanitarian catastrophe - Foreign Affairs
Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty addressed on Sunday the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza amid Israel's ongoing systematic starvation policy, during phone calls with his Turkish and Greek counterparts, Hakan Fidan and Giorgos Gerapetritis. According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's efforts, in cooperation with Qatar and the US, to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, stressing the necessity of stopping the bloodshed of the Palestinian people. He also reviewed Egypt's ongoing efforts to bring humanitarian, medical, and shelter aid into Gaza, stressing the need to ensure the continuous flow of humanitarian aid into the strip and the importance of continuing pressure to increase the number of aid trucks. Additionally, Abdelatty and his Turkish counterpart stressed the importance of continuing joint action with international actors to halt the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza and reach a deal that would guarantee the release of captives and put an end to the current starvation policy. They also emphasised the need to confront Israel's disregard for all rules of international law and international humanitarian law, reaffirming the importance of exerting pressure on both concerned parties to reach a ceasefire deal as soon as possible. During his call with his Greek counterpart, the Egyptian FM addressed the latest developments in Libya, where both sides stressed the utmost importance of holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously at the earliest possible opportunity. They also stressed the necessity of dismantling militias and the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries, considering this the only guarantee to achieve security and stability in Libya. During the call, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's steadfast commitment to protecting religious sanctities, including Saint Catherine's Monastery. He emphasised the state's commitment to protecting and preserving the monastery's sacred religious status, as well as refraining from encroaching on its associated archaeological sites, given their spiritual value and religious standing.
