Centre to provide technology to private factories to ramp up rare earth magnet production after China's decision to impose export controls

"We used to be 100% dependent on China for permanent magnets of the rare earths. But recently, China has refused to supply. With this view, the
Indian government
is making efforts for permanent magnet manufacturing," Kishan Reddy told ANI.
"Our mining ministry's institute in Hyderabad has made efforts and prepared a permanent magnet processing unit with equipment. After three to four months, we will try to manufacture permanent magnets by giving the technology to different private factories. For this, the Indian government has also started some PLI schemes to encourage it. We are paying attention to this subject," he added.
He said that PM Modi has continuously discussed the production of magnets in India.
"Recently, during his (PM Modi) visit to 5 countries, discussions were held with different countries on this subject. The raw material of
rare earth
is also available in less quantity in India. Importing that raw material, processing it, making permanent magnets for it, which is used from cell phones to space technology, including defence, there is a huge demand for this. The Indian government is working seriously for this. This scheme has also been brought under it," he said.

The central government has earmarked Rs 1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India, aimed at building domestic capacity when there are reports of global short supply.
Early this April, China announced a decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items, pushing a supply shortage across the world, including India.
India was in touch with the Chinese side, seeking predictability in the supply of
rare earth metals
-- which had been put under the export controls regime by the Xi administration.
China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and
clean energy
systems.
Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals.

announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings.

In recent weeks and months, several Bengali migrant workers on suspicion of being illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been detained, and some of them pushed into Bangladesh from states like Odisha, Maharashtra, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh – all BJP-ruled states.

The Tibetan spiritual leader recalled how it had been more than 66 years since a large number of Tibetans, including him, fled to India following the "Chinese Communist invasion of Tibet". Referring to India as "Arya Bhumi" in his written message read out at the conference by his confidant and noted scholar Samdhong Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama said that "here (India) I have enjoyed the freedom and opportunity to continue my studies of ancient Indian wisdom". He felt a "special closeness" to India, which, over and above being the world's most populous country and the largest democracy, is the land of the Buddha, the place where he attained enlightenment, he added. Hemant flags hacking of JMM's X account
1 2 Ranchi: JMM president and chief minister Hemant Soren on Sunday said the official X account of his party has been hacked, prompting him to order a police investigation into it. Apart from expressing concern over the breach, the chief minister appealed to the Elon Musk-owned social media giant to take cognisance of the matter. Party members said at 12:12 am on Sunday, the hackers posted a suspicious link along with an image of a rodent on the JMM's X account, which was immediately flagged by Hemant on his social media platform. No other activity related to hacking was detected on the account thereafter. "Many times, these attacks are sponsored by neighbouring enemy states to retrieve crucial information by gaining access to the social media platforms of prominent figures and organisations," said Vineet Kumar, the founder and global president of CyberPeace Foundation. He informed that the attacks are launched at critical and sensitive infrastructure, including water treatment and energy plants, and hospitals to disrupt normal activities and create chaos. "Apart from information gathering, many attacks are orchestrated for financial fraud and duping people. The newest form of financial fraud that has been emerging is that Indian nationals are being trafficked to Cambodia via Thailand and employed in scam centres run by India's enemy countries to dupe Indian citizens," Kumar added. As the menace is growing rapidly, law-enforcing agencies have also been taking a proactive stance against it. On July 5, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) busted an organised Chinese cybercrime network, arresting seven individuals involved in illegal investment scams and digital arrests. Police sources said the modus operandi of the hackers and their sponsors was to send malicious apps to smartphones linked with bank accounts. "Once the phone owner installed the apps, they automatically transmit OTPs and all bank alerts sent to the particular phone to servers controlled from China. This enabled the Chinese hackers to gain remote access to the Indian bank accounts which were then used to transfer the defrauded money to offshore accounts," the source added.
