In a spiritual shift, Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 to replace 'Shahi Snan' with 'Amrit Snan'
This decision was taken during a meeting of the Akhara Parishad and the Kumbh Mela organisers with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nashik on Sunday.
'The Kumbh Mela is held at four locations across the country Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik and it takes place based on where the drops of Amrit fell. The term Shahi Snan was introduced during the Mughal era. Therefore, this tradition is now being changed, and the Shahi Snan will henceforth be referred to as Amrit Snan. This decision was taken after discussions during a meeting between all 13 Akharas and the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nashik,' Mahant Bhakti Charan Das, spokesperson of All India Vaishnav Akhara told ANI.
The move aims to infuse the event with a deeper spiritual and religious essence, steering it away from the display of grandiosity and power. Saints from various Akharas have stressed that the bathing ritual should symbolize spiritual discipline rather than royal pageantry.
'Referring to the sacred bath as 'Amrit Snan' aligns more closely with the true purpose of the event,' said Mahant Bhakti Charan Das.
According to Hindu beliefs, bathing during the Kumbh Mela cleanses one of all sins. The name 'Amrit Snan' draws from the mythological tale of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), where drops of divine nectar--Amrit--were believed to have fallen at the Kumbh sites, including Nashik.
The Akharas view 'Amrit Snan' as a return to the festival's spiritual roots, ensuring the focus remains on devotion, penance, and salvation rather than spectacle.
Earlier today, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said preparations have been underway following discussions with chiefs of various Akharas ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 in Nashik.
'A meeting was organised in relation to the Kumbh Mela of Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, in which the 13 major Akharas were also present. We discussed the event in the presence of all the Mahants, saints, priests... This time the fair is going to be long, so people will get to see many important 'Amrit Snan' dates and holy festivals...,' CM Fadnavis told reporters here.
He also said that the government has come up with a plan to ensure the cleanliness of the Godavari River.'A plan has also been prepared to ensure that our Godavari Maa flows clean and uninterrupted... Works worth Rs 2,000 crores are in the pipeline. Overall, preparations have been made here so that a divine and grand fair is held,' CM Fadnavis said.
The Nashik Kumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in India, is held once every 12 years, where devotees come to take a holy bath on the banks of the Godavari River.
The Maharashtra government is focused on ensuring smooth arrangements, including sanitation, security, and infrastructure development.

Gadchiroli district has shown that a big leap can be taken for water security with a planned approach and technical guidance. He also expressed his belief that agriculture, life and environment will get stability through water conservation. On July 23, Fadnavis inaugurated and commissioned a slew of projects besides launching a plantation initiative in Gadchiroli. He planted a sapling in Gadchiroli, marking the launch of 'Harit Maharashtra, Samruddha Maharashtra', a campaign to plant 1 crore trees in the district. 'This is more than a plantation drive; it's a commitment to preserving nature while driving development rooted in sustainability. Gadchiroli, with its rich forest cover, plays a key role in maintaining Maharashtra's ecological balance. Between 2014 and 2019, 50 crore trees were planted across the state,' he said.

CAQM sets up cell in Mohali for paddy residue management
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has set up a permanent cell in Mohali's SAS Nagar to strengthen year-round monitoring and coordination for effective management of paddy stubble in Punjab and Haryana. Earlier, a temporary Paddy Stubble Management Cell operated in Chandigarh from October 1 to November 30, 2024, during the critical residue burning period. (ANI) In a statement, the CAQM said the new facility at the Kisan Vikas Chamber in Kalkat Bhawan will oversee the preparation of plans, engagement with farmers and other stakeholders and monitoring of the supply chain to ensure continuous and assured use of paddy straw by end-users. 'The cell will now operate round the year right from the start of preparation of plans, engagement with farmers and all other stakeholders related to effective paddy stubble management,' the commission said. Apart from stubble management, the cell will also monitor air pollution aspects in identified thermal power plants and coordinate the co-firing of biomass. It will inspect and track air quality-related issues across all sectors in NCR areas of Haryana, particularly those farther from Delhi. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in coordinating efforts with the state agriculture departments of Punjab and Haryana, field enforcement teams and flying squads, especially during the peak paddy harvesting and stubble burning season. Earlier, a temporary Paddy Stubble Management Cell operated in Chandigarh from October 1 to November 30, 2024, during the critical residue burning period. Recognising that stubble management, particularly ex-situ use of paddy straw, requires continuous effort, the CAQM had urged the Punjab government to provide infrastructure and logistical support for sustained planning and execution.

Nashik civic body to install sirens at 12 locations in city ahed of Simhastha Kumbh Mela
Nashik: The civic body has decided to install sirens at 12 locations across Nashik city as part of its preparations for emergencies and the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Last month, the state home department sent a letter to the district collector regarding the installation of sirens to manage emergencies. During a recent meeting, NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri told officials of various departments, including public works, electricity, education, and disaster management, to coordinate the installation of sirens at the locations identified by civic officials. The sirens, which can be heard up to 3.5km, will provide alerts to devotees attending the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in the event of disasters or emergencies. The twelve identified locations for siren installation include the NMC headquarters, Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, municipal corporation school 89 (Pathardi Phata), municipal corporation school 43 (Kathe Galli), municipal corporation school 20 (Shivajinagar), municipal corporation school 24 (Vishwasnagar), municipal corporation school 64 (Vihitgaon), Ambad fire station, Nashik Road divisional office, Satpur divisional office, and NMC's fire station at Amrutdham in Panchavati. Nashik is one of four cities where the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years. The last Simhastha Kumbh Mela took place in 2015, with the forthcoming event expected between 2026 and 2028. Approximately 2.5 crore devotees attended the 2015 Kumbh Mela, and more than five crore are anticipated during the upcoming edition. The upcoming Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place from 2026 to 2028. The flag hoisting ceremony will take place in Oct 2026, followed by the first three Amrit Snans (holy baths) during Aug and Sept 2027. Sadhus will take a holy dip at Ramkund in the Godavari river on these Amrit Snan days.
