Chandigarh plants record 1.17 lakh trees

In one of the largest single-day environmental efforts in the city's history, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria led a massive plantation campaign across Chandigarh to mark Van Mahotsav 2025. Against the target of planting 1,05,874 saplings at 253 identified sites, total 1,17,836 saplings were planted at 318 sites on Friday, transforming parks, road dividers, school campuses and residential areas into green zones.
Personally visiting 23 of these locations, Kataria planted a variety of ecologically significant and culturally symbolic saplings — from Crushia at Matka Chowk and Mango at Panjab University to Rudraksha at Raj Bhavan and Triveni (Peepal, Banyan, Neem) at Sukhna Choe Reserve Forest.
'This is not an event, it is a green movement — one that must echo through every household, every school, every institution of Chandigarh,' the Governor said, addressing participants during the drive. 'Van Mahotsav is not merely about planting trees; it is about planting hope, balance, and the future itself.'
Home Secretary Mandip Brar, DGP Pushpendra Kumar, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests Saurabh Kumar, and other senior officials from the Chandigarh Administration also took part in the drive.
Calling upon citizens to treat the annual campaign as a collective environmental responsibility, Kataria invoked Munshi Premchand's words: 'Vrikshon ka arth hai jal, jal se roti aur roti se hi jeevan', stressing that human life depends on trees — for rain, rivers, fertile land and survival itself.
Asserting that 'our relationship with nature is not contractual but emotional,' Kataria said the sacred philosophy of Panchmahabhuta — Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Sky — finds a living connector in trees. Citing Guru Nanak Dev Ji's verse, 'Pavan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahat', he urged people to respect the environment as one would honour a parent or teacher.
Highlighting sobering global data, the Governor pointed out that more than 15 billion trees are lost globally each year, equivalent to the destruction of 40 football fields of forest every second. 'These are not just numbers — they are urgent signals from a wounded planet. We must act now, and act with conviction,' he said.
Chandigarh, which already boasts 51.54% green cover, has now set a new benchmark in urban greening. The UT Administration plans to plant over five lakh saplings this year as part of long-term ecological restoration efforts.
Kataria also unveiled three key environmental initiatives on the occasion: the Greening Chandigarh Action Plan, the State Action Plan on Climate Change, and the Chandigarh Tree Map.
He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' for giving emotional depth to environmental action. 'Every tree planted in the name of one's mother is a living tribute — a symbol of love, protection, and nurturing,' the Governor said, urging the youth to carry the movement forward.
The day-long campaign saw enthusiastic participation from government officials, schoolchildren, volunteers and residents. Among the locations where Kataria planted saplings were:
• Matka Chowk: Crushia
• Patiala Ki Rao: Kapur
• Panjab University: Mango
• Shantikunj & Sector 18 Neighbourhood Park: Neeli Gulmohar
• Sector 22 Govt Model School: Shyam Tulsi and Amla (Herbal Garden)

UT allots tender for construction of verandah outside CJ's court

Chandigarh: After completing technical and financial evaluations of tenders received, the UT engineering department finally allotted a tender for construction of a verandah outside court room number 1 (Chief Justice Court) of the Punjab and Haryana high court. The work was allotted for approximately Rs 9 lakh against the tender amount of around Rs 13.50 lakh. As per terms and conditions, the successful bidder will have to complete work in two months from the date of allotment of the tender. The bidder will have to comply with the work criteria mentioned in the tender document, keeping all clauses in mind. "Since the area of Punjab and Haryana high court falls under the Capitol Complex, a Unesco World Heritage Site, senior engineering officers are monitoring the work to ensure that it goes according to plan. A member of the sub-committee of the UT's Chandigarh Heritage Committee (CHC) also visited the site last week," sources said. The new verandah is to be constructed outside court room number 1, like the verandahs from court room numbers 2 to 9 in the high court. "All dimensions are given approximately and must be verified on-site before execution of the work. The proposed verandah will be constructed as per the existing one in front of court numbers 2 to 9 in terms of design, specification, and structural feasibility. All electrical services shall follow the same pattern as in front of the existing court numbers 2 to 9," the engineering department has been instructed. Sources in the Chandigarh administration revealed that to construct the new verandah outside court room number 1, around 22 iron poles will be installed and covered with RCC battens. This will minimise the need for any major construction work with the existing building. The matter was already discussed in the heritage committee of the UT administration. In May, the Supreme Court upheld a Punjab and Haryana high court order directing the Chandigarh administration to construct a verandah (covered walkway) outside the Chief Justice's court in the Punjab and Haryana High Court building. The Supreme Court's decision came after the Chandigarh administration appealed the high court order, raising concerns about potential violations of Unesco guidelines. Box: Heritage panels' nod Both the Chandigarh Heritage Committee (CHC) and a sub-group of the heritage committee approved the project. The Chandigarh administration also sent the matter to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to recommend the case for consideration and approval by the World Heritage Committee. "The ASI is the nodal agency to communicate and deliberate with the World Heritage Committee for such matters, as the Chandigarh administration cannot directly approach the World Heritage Committee," sources in the UT said. Highlights of new structure Tender allotted: UT engineering department has awarded the tender for constructing a verandah outside Court Room No. 1 (Chief Justice's Court) Cost: ₹9 lakh (against the original tender estimate of ₹13.5 lakh) Timeline: Work to be completed within 2 months from the date of allotment Design & Specifications: Verandah will match the design of existing verandahs outside Court Rooms 2 to 9 Around 22 iron poles will be installed and covered with RCC battens Electrical services will follow the existing pattern Heritage considerations: The site is part of the Capitol Complex, a Unesco World Heritage Site Monitored by senior engineering officers and visited by a member of the Chandigarh Heritage Committee (CHC) Legal background: Supreme Court upheld the High Court's directive to construct the verandah Chandigarh administration had raised concerns about Unesco guideline violations Approvals: Approved by both CHC and its sub-group Matter referred to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for recommendation to the World Heritage Committee MSID:: 122280065 413 |

Chd edu dept to issue ads for 334 teaching, other posts this month

Chandigarh: The UT education department is set to advertise 334 teaching and academic support posts this month. These include 218 vacancies for junior basic teachers (JBTs), 109 for trained graduate teachers (TGTs), and a few specialist posts in special education and information systems. Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, director of school education, said, "We have finalised the requisition. The advertisement will be issued within this month. The need for recruitment has been long-pending. Having completed the regular recruitment process, we are now in a position to move ahead and complete the Samagra Siksha recruitments." The last recruitment drive was carried out in 2023, when 293 JBT posts were advertised then. It had attracted many applicants, with eligibility limited to residents of Chandigarh. Officials said this year's recruitment is also likely to follow a similar pattern, with merit-based selection through a written test, though final details are yet to be notified. The shortage has been particularly acute at the primary and middle level, where JBTs and TGTs form the core teaching workforce.
