Teens increasingly turning to AI for friendship as national loneliness crisis deepens

A new study shows that a third of American teenagers prefer chatting with artificial intelligence companions over having real friends. Common Sense Media's report, titled "Talk, Trust, and Trade-Offs: How and Why Teens Use AI Companions," revealed that the most widespread uses of AI are aged 13-17. The report explained further that the "use of AI companions is not a niche interest, but rather mainstream teen behavior" and that teens "find conversations with AI companions to be as satisfying or more satisfying than those with real-life friends." "AI companions are emerging at a time when kids and teens have never felt more alone," Common Sense Media Founder and CEO James P. Steyer said in the press release. "This isn't just about a new technology — it's about a generation that's replacing human connection with machines, outsourcing empathy to algorithms, and sharing intimate details with companies that don't have kids' best interests at heart. Our research shows that AI companions are far more commonplace than people may have assumed — and that we have a narrow window to educate kids and families about the well-documented dangers of these products." Although nearly half of teens used AI companions as a tool, the report also stated that 33% of teens use AI companions for social interactions and emotional support. For example, teens would use them for living out relationships, emotional support, role-playing, romantic interactions and friendship. A writer at Daze who cited the study raised awareness about the loneliness epidemic among young people and that it could lead to an invasion of privacy. "Some teenagers are telling AI their most intimate problems and secrets, which poses another problem – it's not a good idea to entrust this information to tech companies, some of whom have an extremely lax approach to data privacy. Would you really want Sam Altman or Elon Musk to have access to the contents of your teenage diary?" James Greig wrote in Daze. He added that it underscores a "larger crisis of youth loneliness" as teenagers stopped hanging out at malls and going to the movies, "which has corresponded with rising rates of depression and anxiety." "Being able to speak to an AI companion might alleviate the feeling of loneliness, and some people may find it helpful, but if it's becoming a replacement for socializing in the real world, then it risks entrenching the problem," Greig added.

Beyoncé surprises fans with Destiny's Child reunion to cap off Cowboy Carter tour

Beyoncé brought the curtain down on her 'Cowboy Carter' tour with a surprise Destiny's Child reunion at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday. The stunned crowd roared when Beyoncé emerged on stage with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams announcing, 'Destiny's Child b—!' before the trio delivered a medley of their hits including the 2001 anthem 'Bootylicious' and 2004 hit 'Lose My Breath.' They also performed a version of Beyoncé's 2022 'Energy,' along with the song's viral 'mute challenge.' It was the first time the Grammy-winning singer had performed onstage with her former bandmates Rowland and Williams since 2018, when she played Coachella. The reunion left fans ecstatic, describing the moment as 'iconic' and 'legendary.' 'Y'all will never understand how iconic this is considering they're one of the most successful girl groups of all time,' wrote one on X. It also prompted some to speculate whether a more sustained Destiny's Child recoupling might be in the future. 'If this is a sign that destiny's child will go on tour they can 3x the rent, just make it happen,' wondered another fan on X. The reunion was an electric moment in a show full of charged moments. Shaboozey, Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' collaborator, also joined her to perform their hit 'Sweet Honey Buckiin'.' Jay-Z, who made a number of appearances with his wife during her nine-city, all-stadium tour, was in Las Vegas too, where they belted out their 2003 hit 'Crazy in Love,' ending the song with a kiss. The star wattage was high off-stage as well. 'Grand opening, grand closing! Here in Las Vegas with the cowboy crew to watch Beyoncé close out her historic Cowboy Carter tour!!' shared Gayle King on Instagram with photos alongside Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian. Also spotted in the crowd were actress Kerry Washington, Maya Rudolph and director Paul Thomas Anderson.

Miley Cyrus is not 'pushing for marriage' right now, claims 'source' According to an exclusive report from Star Magazine, a source close to Miley Cyrus emphasized she was satisfied with how things were going with her boyfriend, Maxx Morando. The source claimed, 'Miley is not at a crossroads in her relationship with Maxx.' They added, 'She's exactly where she wants to be and is not pegging a bunch of ridiculous expectations on this relationship.' After her divorce from Liam Hemsworth in 2020, Cyrus reportedly took time to reflect and prioritize her well-being. Miley Cyrus previously offered glimpses into the dynamic of her relationship with her boyfriend, Maxx Morando. She added, 'I'm just hoping that, as long as he follows in my footsteps, everything is going to be great. That's right when I started turning my life around.' Morando, too, has inspired Cyrus creatively. She credited him as a collaborator on her latest album, 'Something Beautiful.' She admitted to Harper's Bazaar, 'I've always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.' For now, Miley Cyrus is right where she wants to be.
