Access road to KIA southern zone expected completion within this month, says Kota Sentosa rep
KUCHING (July 3): The access road to the southern zone of Kuching International Airport (KIA) is almost completed, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
When updating the public on the status of its work progress, Yap said the physical progress of the project was at 95 per cent as of June 25.
Having been briefed by Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching Divisional Engineer Wang Say Kwang during a meeting yesterday, Yap in a statement highlighted the remaining works and their targeted completion dates.
'Road A/D Junction: 300 metres of road widening works are in progress and are targeted for completion by July 7; Road A (Sungai Kuap Bridge Approaches): 750 metres of road base construction from CH3+200 to CH3+950 is ongoing and targeted for completion by July 21; and Street Lighting, Substation and Traffic Light: Following verification of the substation platform by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) this week, all electrical systems will be energised, with all related works scheduled for completion by July 31,' he said.
A critical component of this project involves the Underpass Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system, which requires relocation of the existing AGL to a new vertical profile that complies fully with stringent aviation safety standards and, this includes raising 13 rows of AGL poles along the aircraft approach flight path, Yap said.
He added that due to the high level of technical complexity and safety considerations, this work required approvals from the Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB); Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Kuching Office and; CAAM Division of Air Navigation Services and Aerodrome (ANSA) Kuala Lumpur.
'I am pleased to inform that the final approval from the CAAM Division of ANSA Kuala Lumpur was officially granted via email on July 1, 2025.
'This approval marks a significant milestone, enabling the contractor to proceed with the remaining AGL works and, the contractor has indicated that they will require approximately one month to complete these activities,' said Yap.
In line with the highest safety precautions, he said the road can only be opened to public use after the completion of the scheduled Flight Testing Window from this Sept 21 to 26, which is necessary to ensure that all airfield safety systems are fully operational and certified.
Yap said he has requested JKR to supervise and monitor the project contractor closely, now that all regulatory approvals have been secured, to ensure that all outstanding works are completed in a timely manner.
'I would like to ask for the patience and understanding of all road users and residents, as these final steps are critical to uphold aviation safety and public safety. It is our shared priority to ensure the road is opened safely for public use by the end of September 2025.
'I wish to extend my appreciation to JKR, all relevant agencies, the contractor, and stakeholders for their cooperation and commitment to the successful delivery of this important infrastructure project that will benefit the people of Kuching and Sarawak,' he concluded. access road Kuching International Airport Wilfred Yap

Pasir Gudang Highway: Phased road opening expected soon
JOHOR BARU: Final discussions with contractors and related agencies are expected to conclude this week to finalise the location and date for the phased opening of the three-lane road under the Pasir Gudang Highway widening project. Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the road opening would be carried out in stages involving several sections along the five-kilometre work area, depending on the level of readiness and current safety aspects. "This will allow the completed sections to be opened earlier so that the public can begin using them and enjoy the benefits. "If we want to expedite the project, we would have to open only one lane while work is ongoing. However, that would cause traffic disruptions. So, we need to strike a cannot be reduced to fewer than the two lanes currently in use," said the Bukit Pasir Assemblyman, who visited the site to see the work progress of the project last night. Commenting on the latest development at the project site, Mohamad Fazli said his primary focus was on two key locations - at CH1170 (in front of Petron) and CH4200 (near the Wau replica roundabout), as these areas were riddled with potholes, poorly lit and had uneven road surfaces. He said that works such as road surfacing and lighting installation were being actively carried out, with over 467 patching works completed since January. The contractor, he said, had also given an assurance that the installation of 197 streetlights along the five-kilometre route would be completed by July 11, complemented by additional spotlights and warning blinkers at blind spots to enhance road user safety. Meanwhile, Mohamad Fazli said motorists whose vehicles were damaged due to potholes along the project route could file a compensation claim to the contractor or concessionaire. "This provision is part of the contract between the Public Works Department (PWD) and the concessionaire. The road must be maintained in a safe condition at all times. If damage or an accident occurs due to unsafe infrastructure, road users can lodge a police report and submit a claim with photographic evidence of the incident location," he said. The Pasir Gudang Highway serves as the main route to Pasir Gudang, the largest industrial area in the country, which is home to more than 5,000 factories across various industries. It also connects two major ports — Johor Port and Tanjung Langsat Port (PTL). Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced last February that the Pasir Gudang Highway upgrading project (Phase 3), involving the stretch from the Perling Elevated Interchange to the North-South Expressway On-ramp, would see the highway expanded from four lanes to six lanes at a cost of RM301.5 million. The project is expected to be completed by June 2028. Meanwhile, the project to upgrade the Pasir Gudang Highway (Phase 2B), covering the stretch from the Bandar Seri Alam/Taman Rinting Interchange to Pasir Gudang, will also be widened from four lanes to six lanes at a cost of RM78 million. It is scheduled for completion by Feb 2026. — BERNAMA

China can work with France over range of sectors, Wang says
CHINA is ready to cooperate with France in industries such as nuclear power, aviation, artificial intelligence, green energy and biotechnology, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. Wang's comments in Paris capped a European visit that also took him to Brussels and Berlin. During his trip, China announced anti-dumping duties on European brandy while exempting major cognac makers that agreed to minimum price levels. That matter has been 'properly resolved,' Wang said. China also is willing to strengthen strategic communication and coordination with France on Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East, Wang said at a news conference with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. Wang expressed the hope that France would urge the EU to address China's trade and economic disputes with the bloc and respond to its concerns, state-owned Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday. –BLOOMBERG
