Malo Gusto faces up to 'most difficult part of football' after Chelsea nightmare

Daily Mirror18-06-2025
Chelsea star Malo Gusto had a night to forget in the UEFA Conference League final but the right-back has spoken about his efforts to rebound from the huge setback
Malo Gusto says he will come back stronger after his European nightmare. The Chelsea defender was hooked at half time in the Conference League final against Real Betis after enduring a awful 45 minutes in Wroclaw.
Betis were leading at the break after Gusto's mistake but Chelsea substituted him and came back to win 4-1 and clinch a European trophy on top of qualifying for the Champions League. It was a bittersweet night for the France international but he says it can also be a good learning curve.

The 22-year-old said: 'The first half was complicated. I had good ideas but the reality was not good. That can happen. I just tried to switch off straight after the game before I went to the national team.

'Mentality is the most difficult part of football. Sometimes you have bad moments and it can be hard to do better straight after. The most important thing is to switch off.
'But in football we have many games and there's a chance after the bad game that you get another three days after so you have to try to avoid the bad moments, the bad feelings in your mind and just focus on after.'
Gusto, talking ahead of Chelsea's Club World Cup showdown with Flamengo on Friday, now wants to enjoy another big step in his career by playing in the Champions League. He added: 'Those were our objectives, to get top four, to be in the Champions League for the next season, to win the Conference League and we've done that.
'Now the most important thing is to play well in the Champions League, to show to people we deserve to be here. To come into Stamford Bridge and hear the Champions League music. It will be my first time to play this competition so I'm excited, proud.
'It's a big challenge but I think it's similar to the Premier League because every game is tough, maybe even more so in the Champions League but we are ready. We have many top players in the squad and now we just have to be ready for next season.'
Chelsea take on Flamengo looking to continue their perfect start to the Club World Cup. They won their opening group game 2-0 against Los Angeles FC, with Flamengo winning their own opener by the same margin against Esperance.

Celtic pounced on transfer trend in post Covid era and it's part of why Euro giants now love Scottish players

The Hoops dipped into Japan for the same reason European football's big guns now love a Scot Bjorn Hamberg believes the fallout from the Covid pandemic has forced European big guns to make Scottish football 's market a must-go port of call. The former Feyenoord assistant boss has watched a host of clubs look for tartan talent after traditionally turning their nose up at recruiting talent from these shores. ‌ He said: 'It's great see Scottish players now making a mark at clubs across Europe. It's a relatively new frontier and the Covid pandemic has been a factor in that. ‌ 'Clubs had to reassess how to do business and run their recruitment departments at a more sustainable level. 'A lot of these clubs had to look deeper into different markets and Scotland has become one of them where value for money can be found. 'It's similar to what Celtic did with the Japanese market – and they did amazingly well. "It has been too easy to target proven footballers and players for the here-and-now. 'Scouting for talent is now about having a belief you can find quality footballers anywhere in the world. 'The trend for British players moving abroad is now well established with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold being Real Madrid players. ‌ 'You look back and see David Beckham moving to AC Milan and PSG – at the time it seemed unbelievable. 'Now it's far more commonplace and Scottish players are part of that trend as the lines are far blurrier with moves from country to country in Europe. ‌ ' Lawrence Shankland moved to Beerschot in Belgium a few years ago and is now a Scotland striker. 'Moves like that are now routine. Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour have had an amazing season as title winners at Napoli. Josh Doig and Lewis Ferguson are doing well playing in Serie A.' Below-par England begin European title defence with defeat to France

Lauren James returned to Sarina Wiegman's starting XI and England thought they had struck first against the 2022 semi-finalists but had an early Alessia Russo effort chalked off after a VAR check. Instead Marie-Antoinette Katoto fired in a 36th-minute opener before Chelsea's Sandy Baltimore doubled France's lead three minutes later. Defeat in our #WEURO2025 opener. Our focus quickly turns to Wednesday and matchday two. — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 5, 2025 Late substitutions sparked the Lionesses into life in the closing stages and Walsh gave them hope, halving the deficit in the 87th minute, but they could not salvage a point. With England men's boss Thomas Tuchel watching on from the stands, James got herself involved inside the first minute, latching on to the ball inside France's penalty area before firing a left-footed effort aimed at the top corner off-target. Three minutes later the Chelsea forward was skipping around the edge of the area, sending in a cross that just evaded several England heads. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton got her first taste of major-tournament action when she came out to collect Selma Bacha's free-kick, earning an appreciative round of applause from the England delegation stationed behind her. Russo thought she had scored after pouncing on the rebound from Lauren Hemp's saved effort, but a VAR check determined Beth Mead had been marginally offside in the build-up to Hemp's initial attempt and the goal was ruled out. Alessia Russo's celebrations were cut short (Nick Potts/PA). Momentum shifted in France's favour, their efforts inching ever closer as Hampton was forced into a good save, sticking out a leg to deny Elisa De Almeida. And it was the Paris St Germain defender whose initial midfield interception was the catalyst for the opener, finding Delphine Cascarino with a well-weighted pass. San Diego Wave forward Cascarino then sent the ball across the face of goal, where Katoto obligingly tapped in. Baltimore doubled their advantage three minutes later, Leah Williamson and her Chelsea team-mate Lucy Bronze unable to contain the in-form Blues star before she rifled into the top right corner. VAR ruled – much to Wiegman's visible chagrin – that Russo had not been fouled in the build-up. The second half got off to a lively start for France, with Hampton denying Grace Geyoro but fumbling her save and having to scramble back just in time to prevent more damage. James' evening ended after 60 minutes as part of a triple-change for Wiegman. The Lionesses looked to be running out of time and chances by the 77th minute when Grace Clinton made her major tournament debut, followed by Michelle Agyemang's minutes later. But England were suddenly sparked to life, substitute Ella Toone nearly halving the deficit with a deflected effort. Walsh finally clawed one back after France could not fully clear an England corner, the Chelsea midfielder taking advantage, guiding a shot past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin from the edge of the area to give the Lionesses a fighting chance. But, while they finally looked a threat, five minutes of added time were not enough to salvage a draw.

But they lost out in the play-off final to Sunderland and the England under-21 cap has returned to his parent club. Palace are looking for around £10million for Rak-Sakyi - but Rangers may look to loan him. Ibrox bosses could also attempt to get him on a permanent deal for a lower fee. Gers boss Russell Martin is looking for a winger to replace Vaclav Cerny after his loan ended. Rak-Sakyi came through the ranks at Chelsea before joining Palace in 2019. He had a productive loan spell at Charlton before shining for Sheffield United last season. But he's unlikely to feature for Palace in the Premier League and looks set to move on. Gers have already added Max Aarons, Lyall Cameron, Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard this summer. Wolves stopper Nasser Djiga is also in talks over a loan, while Leicester City defender Conor Coady is edging closer to an Ibrox move. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview But Martin still wants more - with several players set to depart before the end of the window. Lille are in talks over a megabucks deal for Hamza Igamane and AEK Athens want Cyriel Dessers. Fringe men like Rabbi Matondo, Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies could also be shipped out. Speaking on Friday, Martin said: 'We are working hard to make sure we get the right ones. 4 'The ones already in the building we are so pleased about and the ones we think will come in in the next week or two we'll be so pleased with them. 'We still need some help, but we are all aware of that. 'We can't be in a rush and just sign the ones we're not too sure about. 'We have to go after the ones we really want. We have to look at character first. 'Can you come here and add to us as a group in terms of your behaviour, the way you train, the way you work, who you are as a human being? 4 'Playing for this football club won't be for everyone so character first then talent after. 'We want to get both. 'We're at a disadvantage because we have these early European qualifiers. Kevin is calling guys who are still on the beach. 'We are waiting for things to happen so it's not a lack of willingness. Everyone is working so hard. 'The ones we have brought in so far, great. But there will be more.'
