Gary Woodland chosen as final assistant captain for US Ryder Cup team
Woodland joins Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kisner and Webb Simpson as U.S. assistants when the Americans try to win back the cup from Europe on Sept. 26-28.
The assistants could take on extra significance this year as Bradley decides whether to be the first playing captain since 1963. Bradley won the Travelers Championship two weeks ago, giving him more wins in the last year than any American except Scottie Scheffler.
Two months remain before the six players qualify, followed by six captain's picks.
'As a major champion and someone who is still competing at a high level, he is well aware of the demands of performing on golf's biggest stages,' Bradley said of Woodland, who won the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. 'He will be a valuable leader for us over the coming months and throughout the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.'
Woodland's lone experience in team matches was playing in the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, going 1-1-1 in another U.S. victory. Tiger Woods was a playing captain that year.
The Kansas native is favorite among players and a recent winner of the PGA Tour Courage award for having a lesion removed from his brain in September 2023 on a tract that caused unfounded fears.
Woodland was runner-up in the Houston Open this year and is No. 68 in the FedEx Cup.

Jannik Sinner shows no signs at Wimbledon of being unable to move past his epic French Open loss
LONDON (AP) — As well as Jannik Sinner is playing at Wimbledon, he doesn't appear to need much in the way of help. Still, he got some Saturday when his opponent, Pedro Martinez, was dealing with a problematic shoulder and often put in first serves at so-so speeds. The No. 1-ranked Sinner has dropped a total of 17 games so far, made his way to the fourth round for the seventh consecutive Grand Slam tournament — he's collected three such trophies in that span — and never was truly in trouble during a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 52 Martinez. 'We all saw that he was struggling,' Sinner said, then noted about his own form: 'First week couldn't have gone better.' There's been zero sign of any sort of inability to move past last month's French Open final, which Sinner lost to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets despite taking the first two and holding three championship points. Against Martinez, Sinner — who returned in May from a three-month doping suspension — went up 5-0 after 20 minutes. During that stretch of 29 points, Martinez managed just one winner, while Sinner accumulated 10. That's when Martinez took a medical timeout, and a trainer massaged the back of his right shoulder. The Spaniard was delivering first serves as slow as 76 mph, compared with Sinner's high of 133 mph. That aspect of Martinez's game improved incrementally, but the only, ever-so-brief, moment of intrigue at Centre Court came in the second set, about 75 minutes in, with Sinner up a break and serving at 4-3. Chelsea completes signing of winger Gittens from Dortmund
LONDON (AP) — Chelsea completed the signing of English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund on Saturday for a reported initial fee of 48.5 million pounds ($66 million). The 20-year-old Gittens signed a contract until 2032 and follows in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, another former Manchester City youth player who developed his game at Dortmund. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Manchester United. 'It feels great,' Gittens said. 'It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea. 'I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling.' Gittens joined Dortmund in 2020 shortly after his 16th birthday and scored 12 times in all competitions last season, but was often dropped to the bench after coach Niko Kovac took over in February. Known as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens when he made his Dortmund debut in 2022, the winger announced last year he wanted to be known simply as Jamie Gittens. He said he was following the example of his father, who also uses part of his full surname. Like Chelsea, Dortmund is playing at the Club World Cup in the United States. Playing for more than one team during the tournament isn't allowed under FIFA rules, so Gittens will have to wait for the new English season to make his debut for Chelsea.
