Former NFL receiver says Shedeur Sanders already low on Browns' QB depth chart
It looks like Shedeur Sanders is finding himself in some struggles in the Browns' quarterback room.
Sanders, 23, is falling behind in the Browns' offseason four-way QB battle, according to TJ Houshmandzadeh, with veteran Joe Flacco also reportedly heading toward the bottom of the pack.
Houshmandzadeh —who was an NFL wide receiver for 11 seasons including eight with the Bengals —said he believes the race has narrowed down to Dillon Gabriel or Kenny Pickett, despite their being earlier reports saying that Sanders and Flacco were performing well in minicamp.

'I was told from somebody that is in the building that ain't a player, it's really coming down to Kenny Pickett or Dillon Gabriel,' Houshmandzadeh said on the Nightcap podcast Friday. 'That's what I was told. But now when you get the reports that Shedeur's completing seven out of nine passes — is it against starters?
'Or is it against the threes and the fours, the guys that are going to get released? So it seems impressive when you see the graphic, but is it really if it's not against the starters or guys that are going to be on the team?'

Houshmandzadeh agreed with Browns wideout Diontae Johnson recently stating that Pickett would start come Week 1.
Johnson, 28, is the only Browns player to come out and comment of the quarterback battle.
Houshmandadeh's claim comes just days after Sanders was nabbed with a speeding ticket in suburban Cleveland for allegedly driving over 100 mph, according to records viewed by The Post.
Sanders was stopped by the Strongsville Police Department on June 17 as the rookie was allegedly driving at 101 mph, which was 41 mph over the speed limit of the road.

The Colorado alum was driving a 2025 Dodge pickup when police stopped him at 12:24 a.m. with one officer saying on bodycam that Sanders had been 'cool' with him.
'I'm like, you were 100 percent going that fast, it's all on camera, man,' an officer could be heard telling another as he sat in the police cruiser.
Sanders' brother, Shilo, poked fun at the incident, joking about his older brother during one of his YouTube videos.
'We out here in Tampa. We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here,' Shilo said in the clip before making himself laugh.

Joe Burrow Ripped Amid Bengals Salary Cap Struggles
Joe Burrow Ripped Amid Bengals Salary Cap Struggles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NFL's most dramatic contract extension saga drags on and will likely remain unsolved into July. Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals have yet to come to terms on a new deal to keep the NFL's sacks leader from the past two seasons in town for the coming years. Advertisement There have been some pretty brutal revelations from the Bengals side and Hendrickson made the situation even messier with a public lambasting of his team. Amid this drama, teammates including Joe Burrow have voiced their support for Hendrickson as he works through this. However, one analyst believes Burrow carries some of the blame here. ESPN's Andrew Hawkins claims that Burrow's massive contract along with those for his top two receivers have muddied the waters in the Bengals keeping Hendrickson happy. 'I think everyone's had a hand in it. When you look at Joe Burrow — a top-five quarterback — there's going to be holes in your team whenever you're getting paid what you're getting paid," Hawkins said on "First Take." "More importantly, he made it very clear that he wanted his guys; he wanted Higgins and he wanted Chase. Get the deals done, I don't care. So when that happens, now some of this is on your shoulders as well to make whatever the circumstances are… work.' Advertisement These three contracts have eaten up a great deal of the Bengals' cap space. To possess the elite offensive firepower that the Bengals maintain, that comes at a cost. But while it's easy to connect the dots and assign blame to the player, it's also an unfair response. Burrow, Chase and Higgins have merely campaigned for what they believe they are worth. Cincinnati obliged and agreed to the terms. Burrow is entirely within his right to campaign for one of his teammates getting a bag after he earned his. That does not change the difficulty on the Bengals side in keeping everyone happy. But it has become clear that Hendrickson will stand firm on what he believes his value to be. Advertisement If the Bengals hope to return to the postseason and threaten other contenders in the AFC, their defense must improve. That improvement almost certainly happens with Hendrickson on the field. Deshaun Watson Taking Shedeur 'Under His Wing'
Deshaun Watson Taking Shedeur 'Under His Wing' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are expected to give each of their four new quarterbacks an opportunity to earn the starting job at training camp later this summer. Advertisement Veteran Joe Flacco returns to Cleveland to join trade acquisition Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders to create the most interesting and populated quarterback competition in the league. While the four take their turns in drills, Deshaun Watson will look on from the sidelines as he recovers from another torn Achilles tendon suffered last season as the Browns' starter. Amid the coaching staff's decision on who should play under center, Watson has offered a hand of encouragement to his teammates, according to Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of Throughout OTAs and minicamp, Watson has reportedly "been an awesome teammate inside the quarterback room and meeting rooms, and has been a great cheerleader for the four quarterbacks vying for the starting job," Cabot wrote on Sunday. Advertisement By the sound of the report, it appears Watson has taken a particular interest in the rookie fifth-round pick Sanders. "Watson, famously dubbed a 'big swing and a miss' by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam at the NFL Annual Meetings in March, has also taken Sanders under his wing to help him come up the learning curve quickly, and it's been working," Cabot said. "Sanders' Hall of Fame dad, Deion, publicly supported Watson when some Browns fans cheered while he was down on the field in tears with his re-torn Achilles Oct. 20 against the Bengals, and Watson is only too happy to repay the favor." Watson singed a five-year $230 million contract with Cleveland in 2022. He isn't expected to be healthy for a "significant portion", if not all of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery in January. Advertisement Although he'll cost over $35 million on Cleveland's cap this year, he is making use his team's commitment to him through his presence and leadership while he isn't able to play. For Sanders, this mentorship should be beneficial as he has made headlines as of late after receiving multiple reckless driving citations. Watson - no stranger to allegations and legal trouble, himself - seems to be taking a mature leadership approach to the 2025 season as he recovers from injury and helps the next Browns starting quarterback anyway he can. Inside How Browns Fans Can End Deshaun Watson 'Nightmare' Immediately
Inside How Browns Fans Can End Deshaun Watson 'Nightmare' Immediately originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Is there any point at which Cleveland Browns ""big swing and a miss" Deshaun Watson gets to be treated like a regular NFL player struggling to get things right? Advertisement Or does the insane guaranteed contract and the troubling sexual misconduct issues allow us to view every single thing about him through a negative prism? The Browns have added four new quarterbacks this offseason. Cleveland pursued two veterans in Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett before spending a pair of draft picks on rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Still hanging on here, too, is the failed "franchise QB'' Watson. A tear of his Achilles last season ended year early and put his upcoming campaign in jeopardy. This only got worse when he suffered a major setback in January. ... all the while draining the cap with the unprecedented $230 million fully guaranteed contract he was handed when the Browns traded for him from Houston. Now comes news that the Browns have yet to rule him out for the season. Advertisement And in almost every other case in the history of the NFL, this would be viewed as at least a glimmer of positive news. "The Browns haven't ruled him out for the season yet ... and they've always been in the 'never-say-never' camp,'' writes. "Besides, they certainly don't want to discourage Watson when he's working so tirelessly to come back, and making a meaningful contribution inside the building.'' That seems sensible. And yet ... consider the headline and the lead in the aggregated story in Sporting News ... "Browns' Deshaun Watson nightmare might not be over yet,'' is how SN phrased it. "Deshaun Watson just won't go away.'' Advertisement We're not chastising SN here. We do not have an answer for when fans can say, "Enough is enough,'' for when Watson has done his penance, for when he'll just be considered another football player ... albeit possibly no longer a good one. But consider piece again. "In the meantime,'' they write, "sources say Watson has been an awesome teammate inside the quarterback room and meeting rooms, and has been a great cheerleader for the four quarterbacks vying for the starting job in Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders." "He's been especially helpful to the rookies in Gabriel and Sanders, who are working overtime to remain in the starting mix." Advertisement Does that count for anything as the club perhaps wants to squeeze any value it can out of what has been a horrible investment? Does it could for anything if he's simply trying to pitch in? In the end, Watson's career downturn might be his nightmare. But as time has passed, we're not sure why it still needs to be ours.
