Montreal hadn't won without him this season, but veteran McLeod Bethel-Thompson changed that with his first victory in three starts.
Article content
Bethel-Thompson completed 30 of 40 passes for 280 yards and a second-quarter touchdown to Cole Spieker. While Bethel-Thompson was intercepted by Greene in the opening quarter, he settled down. He released the ball quickly, relied on mostly short passes to various receivers and was sacked only once.

While it was far from a perfect performance — especially during the third quarter, when Montreal didn't score and ran only eight offensive plays — his numbers would have been better had several receivers not dropped passes.
Article content
Bethel-Thompson used seven receivers, but his favourite target was Tyler Snead, who caught seven passes for 103 yards — including a 42-yard flea flicker from backup Caleb Evans. The Als had 22 first downs, 362 yards' net offence, ran 64 plays and controlled the ball for slightly more than 34 minutes.

'It feels great to finally play my role for this team,' Bethel-Thompson said. 'I'm just so grateful to have done my job. That was an unbelievable kick at the end by Jose.
Article content
'I'll get better. I'll continue to improve. That's the fun part. I was dialed-in on doing my job and putting the team in position to make the kick. There are things I can get better at. I'm just excited to do my role.'

The Als played like a team with a chip on their shoulders after critics said they couldn't win without their franchise quarterback, but Bethel-Thompson, 37, won a Grey Cup with Toronto in 2022.

'You can't buy what we just went through,' Maas told journalists in Calgary. 'It's such an incredible feeling and moment. It's something you'll never forget the rest of your life.
Article content
'He (Bethel-Thompson) deserved it. Any time you've been doubted, like he was this week. And the last few weeks, whether we could win with him? That's a hard cross to bear in my opinion when you're a quarterback. You've got to have confidence when everyone's telling you, you can't do it. I thought he played tremendous. I'm very happy for him.'

Adams completed 15 of 25 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, while tailback Dedrick Mills gained 78 yards on 14 carries and scored twice. But Walker failed miserably after being inserted, completing only three of seven passes for 20 yards. The Stamps, uncharacteristically, took 11 penalties for 121 yards.

Argonauts go for back-to-back sweep of skidding Blue Bombers

(Photo credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images) The Toronto Argonauts scored a much-needed victory when they won the front end of a back-to-back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Six days later, the two participants in last season's Grey Cup meet again when Toronto travels to Winnipeg. The Argonauts posted a 31-17 victory at home on Saturday behind Nick Arbuckle's 316 passing yards and two touchdown tosses. It was a big win for Toronto (2-5), which needs to string together some victories if it hopes to successfully defend its CFL title. The Argos beat the Blue Bombers 41-24 in last year's championship clash. 'Every win is important, especially when it ends a losing streak,' Arbuckle said after the club ended a two-game slide. 'It's a critical part of the season. We're trying to turn things around and build some momentum, so it was important.' Arbuckle has passed for 2,007 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year. His time as the starter will continue after 2023 CFL Most Outstanding Player Chad Kelly was placed on the six-game injured list last weekend due to the serious leg injury he sustained late last season. Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros threw two picks and was pulled at halftime against Toronto. The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player failed to finish the previous contest against the Calgary Stampeders due to a neck injury and has been ruled out of the rematch after aggravating the injury. Chris Streveler will draw the start. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown last week. 'We like what he can do,' Blue Bombers coach Mike O'Shea said of Streveler. 'We like his leadership. He steps in there and he's a pro and he wants to do very well for his teammates. That part of it is so important to him.' Winnipeg (3-3) has dropped its past three games by a total of 56 points, but star running back Brady Oliveira cautioned that there is plenty of time for the club to find its stride. After all, the Blue Bombers lost their first four games last season and were later 2-6 before ending up in the Grey Cup. 'Right now is not the time to panic and not the time to start freaking out or worrying about the three losses in a row,' said Oliveira, who had 82 yards on 13 carries in last week's contest. 'There's still so much time left. We're going to start clicking and it's just a matter of time, and once we start clicking, who says we can't go on a nice little run, a nice little heater -- we did it last year. 'Again, it's different this year to last year, but we've done it before, so why can't it be done again this year?'

Bouzkova broke Mboko for the fourth time to take the opening set 6-1 in just 29 minutes. It marked the first set dropped by Mboko during the tournament. After a few moments spent in the locker room, Mboko returned to the court with a vengeance. Mboko immediately broke her rival in the opening game of the second set, a break of serve she consolidated thanks to a fortuitous bounce off the net cord that landed fair. However, Mboko's second service game with three double faults in the match leveled the set at 2-2. But it didn't faze Mboko, who got the break back, thanks to a double fault by her opponent. Gauff and Mboko will meet for the second time this season at a WTA 1000 tournament. The American got the better of Mboko in a second-round three-set battle on the clay courts in Rome in May. Gauff, the French Open champion, advanced despite having committed 37 double faults in her two matches played so far this week. 'It does give positives that I am winning these matches having literally one part of my game on a crutch,' said Gauff. 'If I can stand on both feet, then I can only imagine that it will be a lot more straight-forward and a lot easier for me.' Gauff may have averted disaster, but the same could not be said for a pair of other top seeds, who saw their tournament come to an end during the day session. Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, seeded 24th, came from behind to beat 15th seed Daria Kasatkina, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Centre Court. Mirra Andreeva, the fourth seed, also was bounced prematurely, falling to American McCartney Kessler in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4. China's Lin Zhu made quick work of the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens, 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour. She will face Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who eliminated Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. The tournament continues through until the finals on Aug. 7.
