Irish MMA fighter sent for trial on Garda corruption and 'confidential' info rap
MMA fighter Charlie Ward has been returned for trial accused of corruption offences involving "confidential" Garda information and helping to pervert the course of justice. The mixed martial artist, 44, of Acragar, Mountmellick and co-accused Noel Carroll, 57, of Ballyfinn Road, Portlaoise, both Co Laois, appeared at Dublin District Court today when the gardaí served them with books of evidence. It follows a probe by the anti-corruption unit, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had also directed trial on indictment. Judge Gerard Jones granted an order, sending them forward for trial to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which has wider sentencing powers and where the case will be listed for mention on October 16. The defendants, who have yet to enter a plea, did not address the court and were warned by the judge to notify the prosecution within 14 days if they intend to use an alibi. Gardaí must also furnish the defence with copies of interview videos. The Irish Mirror's Crime Writers Michael O'Toole and Paul Healy are writing a new weekly newsletter called Crime Ireland. The pair face charges contrary to section 5 of the 2018 Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Act about requests for information concerning three men. According to the court documents, on March 2, 2022, at an unknown location in the state, both men corruptly requested a gift, consideration or advantage on account of a named garda requesting that confidential information relating to another person be obtained and disclosed. Mr Ward is accused of the same type of offence on February 28, 2022, about Garda information on a second male. Another charge states that on the previous day, Mr Ward corruptly offered the same officer an inducement for doing an act in relation to his employment as a member of An Garda Síochána. Mr Ward is also accused of an offence under section 7 of the Criminal Law Act 1997. That alleges that between October 15 -17, 2019, when another person committed an arrestable offence, namely, perverting the course of justice, that he "did aid, abet, counsel or procure the commission of this offence". It is alleged that on January 26, 2022, at an unknown location, Mr Carroll corruptly requested a gift consideration or advantage on account of the garda seeking confidential information about a search operation at the home of a third named man. Gardaí investigating teenage gang attacks on Indian nationals in Tallaght
Gardaí are examining mobile phone imagery and CCTV footage to identify two gangs of teenagers involved in separate attacks on Indian nationals in Tallaght, southwest Dublin, last Saturday evening. In the first incident, a 31-year-old man was attacked by a gang of youths in Sean Walsh Park, near the Square in Tallaght. He had his phone stolen, but there were no reports of racial or derogatory abuse. The second attack happened around 20 minutes later in Parkhill Lawns, Kilnamanagh, about 2.5km away, and involved another gang of teens. This group was separate from the first gang, although gardaí believe they are linked. In the second attack, a 45-year-old Indian man was stripped of his trousers and sustained serious injuries, including lacerations to his face and head. Gardaí are investigating a hate motive as one line of inquiry in this case. Sources said this suspicion may be confirmed as evidence is gathered. Images showing a deep gash above the victim's left eye and blood on his face, hands, and legs circulated on social media. According to Garda sources, the attack followed "false reports" about a man exposing himself at a nearby playground. These allegations are frequently spread by far-right groups in Ireland and abroad to exploit public fears and potentially incite violence against immigrants or foreigners. Videos have circulated on social media accounts linked to known far-right agitators in Ireland, either documenting attacks on innocent people or showing others committing them. Passersby came to the second victim's aid, including one woman who posted a detailed message online about the man's injuries, his teenage attackers, and the presence of agitators in the area. A community event organised by People Before Profit–Solidarity, Sinn Féin, the Socialist Party, and the Social Democrats is being held at the Rua Red centre near the Square at 6.30pm today. It was originally due to take place at the Kilnamanagh roundabout. Laura Gaskell of Dublin South-West Together said: "This cowardly racist attack has shocked Tallaght. People are disgusted that this hatred is trying to take root on our streets. We want to feel safe in our neighbourhoods, whether we were born in Tallaght or moved here. "This and other recent attacks are directly linked to the spreading of misinformation and racist hate online, and campaigns against migrant asylum seekers and workers that have been designed to stoke up violence." She added: 'The man who was attacked works, prays and lives here. He did not deserve this. No one does." Garda Headquarters has appealed for witnesses to come forward and has asked the public not to post or reshare social media content related to the incident to protect the victim's privacy. Conor McGregor's pub on fire as emergency services battle to contain the blaze
Firefighters were battling to put out a blaze at Conor McGregor's pub in Dublin on Friday morning. The emergency services were called after flames and thick clouds of smoke were seen coming from the Black Forge Inn on the Drimnagh Road. Firefighters and a squad of police sped to the Dublin pub, which UFC star McGregor bought for close to €2 million in 2019. The Dublin boozer has previously been the target of a petrol bomb attack. In 2022, less than a year after McGregor reopened the pub after pumping millions into a renovation, Garda were called to investigate after two petrol bombs were thrown at the premises. The fire caused damage to the front panel of Conor McGregor's Black Forge Inn in Crumlin (Image: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin) McGregor subsequently offered a €50,000 reward for anyone who could identify the suspects, sharing CCTV footage of the incident on social media. Over the years, the pub has grown into a popular hangout for visiting celebrities in Dublin. A few weeks ago, American rapper 50 Cent partied with McGregor at the Dublin pub, which has also hosted the likes of comedian Kevin Hart and Arsenal legend Ian Wright. The fire at the Black Forge Inn comes after what has been a turbulent week for McGregor. The 37-year-old, who is engaged to his long-time partner Dee Devlin, has made headlines for being caught kissing a mystery woman on a Florida beach. Following on from that scandal, US rapper Azealia Banks alleged that the Crumlin man sent her a series of unwanted explicit images. Last year a High Court jury in Dublin ordered McGregor to pay damages of almost €250,000 to Nikki Hand, 35, after a much-publicised civil case in which the Dublin woman alleged that the former UFC world champion had raped her.
