eBantuanJKM officially rolled out in Sarawak to boost aid delivery
KUCHING (June 13): The Welfare Department (JKM) has officially launched the implementation of its online Welfare Assistance Management System (eBantuanJKM) in Sarawak, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and integrity of federal financial aid delivery in the state.
JKM director-general Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan said the event was held to recognise the significant contributions of stakeholders involved in the system's rollout in Sarawak.
'This programme is intended to acknowledge those involved in the successful rollout of the eBantuanJKM system in Sarawak, particularly officers and staff from divisional and district welfare offices who manage federal welfare assistance,' he said.
Che Murad also thanked the Accountant General's Department of Malaysia (JANM) for their role in integrating the federal government's financial and accounting system (iGFMAS) with eBantuanJKM.
Recognition was also extended to the Federal Secretary for Sarawak and the Sarawak government for their support in facilitating implementation across the state.
He emphasised that financial assistance remains a core service of JKM, helping targeted communities sustain a decent quality of life.
'There are currently 11 financial aid schemes under JKM and these include the Children Assistance (BKK), Elderly Assistance (BWE), and the Disabled Workers Allowance (EPOKU), the Assistance for Non-Working Persons with Disabilities (BTB), Care Assistance for Bedridden Disabled or Chronic Patients (BPT), and the Federal General Assistance (BA).
'Other schemes are the Foster Child Assistance (BAP), Apprentice Training Assistance (BLP), Launch Grant Assistance (GP), and Prosthetic or Support Equipment Assistance (BAT),' he said.
As of 2024, a total of 550,416 individuals nationwide received assistance via JKM, with a combined allocation of RM2.33 billion.
In Sarawak alone, 43,956 recipients have benefitted, with disbursements amounting to RM214.45 million.
The eBantuanJKM system, first developed in 2006 and launched in 2007, features a centralised database to improve the monitoring and management of aid recipients at the federal level.
It has enabled the elimination of manual payment vouchers, reduced the use of transit accounts, helped prevent misuse of funds, and ensured that all implementing offices comply with current financial regulations.
Che Murad extended his appreciation to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri for officiating at the launch and to all agencies involved in supporting the efficient delivery of federal financial aid via the eBantuanJKM system.
At the event, certificates of appreciation were presented to Sarawak JKM director Semawi Mohamad and to 12 other divisional welfare officers from across the state.
In addition, basic necessities kits were distributed to 10 recipients from welfare offices in Kuching and Samarahan.
Among those in attendance were the federal Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development secretary-general Datuk Dr Maziah Yusoff; state Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development permanent secretary Datu Felicia Tan; National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) Director-General Abdul Shukur Abdullah; and Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) chief executive officer Nordina Haron. aid delivery eBantuanJKM nancy shukri

Malaysia increases aid for 2025 to ease cost of living pressures
KUALA LUMPUR: The increase in the allocation for various forms of financial assistance for 2025 proves the commitment of the MADANI Government in its efforts to reduce the cost of living pressures faced by the people, while also driving sustainable and resilient economic growth. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said among the key initiatives was the increase in the allocation for the Sumbangan TunaI Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) to RM13 billion this year, compared to RM10 billion, which benefits almost nine million recipients or 60 per cent of the adult population. 'The maximum rate for households in 2025 has also been increased to RM4,600, an increase of almost 25 per cent compared to RM3,700 in 2024. 'The government has also raised the allocation for assistance under the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) to RM2.9 billion for 2025 compared to RM2.4 billion previously,' she said in reply to a question by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin during question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat today. Hamzah raised a question regarding the government's strategy to reduce the burden of the people's cost of living, following the country's total debt which has now reached RM1.5 trillion. Lim said other assistance included the Elderly Assistance being increased to RM600 per month compared to RM500, an increase in the Child Assistance for Poor Families to RM250 (six years and below) and RM200 (seven to 18 years), subject to a maximum rate of RM1,000 per family. Also increased is the General Assistance in the Federal Territories to RM150 per month compared to RM100, with a maximum rate of RM500 per family. 'The government has also allocated RM1 billion for various initiatives to address the cost of living comprehensively, including price control of basic goods such as rice and cooking oil. 'Of that amount, RM300 million is allocated specifically for the RAHMAH Umbrella Programme, including the expansion of RAHMAH Sales to all state constituencies to offer basic goods at affordable prices,' he said. She said the remaining RM700 million was used to expand the implementation of other cost of living reduction programmes targeting the B40 and M40 groups. In addition, Lim said the government would also continue the Early Schooling Aid (BAP) as a strategic effort to help parents provide for their children's educational needs, in addition to the MADANI Subsidy Assistance (BUDI MADANI) as a subsidy to the public transport sector, farmers, breeders, smallholders and individual diesel vehicle owners. 'The government is also implementing the My50 Monthly Pass which benefits public transport users in the Klang Valley, especially from the B40 and M40 groups,' she said. She said increasing the people's income was also given focus through the increase in civil servant salaries and the minimum wage which was increased from RM1,500 to RM1,700. 'These measures are important to ensure that the country's economy continues to grow towards realising the objectives under the MADANI Economy framework,' she said. - Bernama

KPWKM targets 1,500 single mothers for KasihnITa 2025 programme
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) is targeting 1,500 single mothers to participate in the Kasih Ibu Tunggal (KasihnITa) 2025 programme, set to launch this August. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stated that the initiative focuses on equipping participants with legal knowledge, financial management skills, and personal development training. Originally introduced in 2023 and now rebranded, the programme will be conducted across six zones nationwide, from Perlis to Sabah. 'This year, the Prime Minister approved an allocation of RM1.6 million for implementation in all six zones. The programme is open not only to divorced women but also those abandoned by their husbands or with seriously ill spouses,' Nancy said during the launch at a hotel here. She highlighted that many single mothers struggle with alimony claims or lack awareness of legal assistance due to concerns over costs. The programme, running from August to December, is a collaboration with the Syariah Lawyers Association of Malaysia, AKPK, and psychological experts. Nancy emphasised proactive interventions to help single mothers secure alimony and encouraged those in need to contact the ministry or visit its official website for support. 'Online access is available for those unable to travel,' she added. KasihnITa aims to build confidence and resilience through extended training rather than short-term courses. 'Financial training will aid household income management, legal aid will protect rights, and counselling will support emotional well-being,' Nancy said. Registration, which opened on May 16, closes on July 31. – Bernama

True grit: Limbless Jafri defies limits to inspire and earn a living
KOTA BARU: Despite being born without hands and toes, 34-year-old Mohamad Jafri Daud has never let his disability stand in the way of earning a living with his wife. With unwavering determination, Jafri has made it his life's mission to change negative perceptions of people with disabilities (OKU), showing that grit and self-belief matter more than physical limitations. "Rather than expecting sympathy, my condition gives me strength. I don't see it as a hindrance, but as a motivation to prove that we, too, are capable. "I'm also blessed to have a supportive wife, Nur Aika Mansor, 30, who accepted me wholeheartedly and has been my pillar of strength. "As long as I am able, I want to be responsible for providing for my family. Being an OKU has pushed me to do my best, just like anyone else," he said at his home in Panchor. Affectionately known as "Pak Do", Jafri said he and his wife tried various ventures, including selling second-hand clothes online during the Covid-19 pandemic but had to stop in 2022 due to poor demand. "Even then, we never gave up. We started selling 'keropok' by the roadside for about a year. Then, in November last year, my wife's family offered us a space at their burger stall. That's where we started our burger business," he said. Jafri also works as a helper at the stall, earning RM65 per day. Together, the couple now sells up to 50 burgers daily at RM3 each, a feat he takes pride in, despite his physical challenges. "Initially, the hardest part was separating the burger patties and placing them on the hot plate, since I don't have fingers like everyone else. But over time, I got used to it and can now do it on my own. My wife helps by wrapping the burgers," he said. The 11th of 12 siblings, Jafri said they hope to one day open a kiosk or a small shop of their own. To supplement their income, he also takes up small jobs repairing jeans, and processes and sells traditional 'bekok' (dried fermented fish). While Jafri receives a monthly RM450 allowance from the Welfare Department, he does not want to rely solely on government aid. "I hope my story inspires other OKU not to give up on life. Don't let your condition become an excuse. With effort, prayer and the right attitude, there is always a way forward," he said.
