Meet Ivanna Sakhno, the 'Star Wars' actress-turned-'M3GAN 2.0' breakout
Ivanna Sakhno has seen all the 'M3GAN' memes.
But it wasn't until she auditioned for the sequel, 'M3GAN 2.0' (in theaters now), that she actually sat down and watched the 2023 slasher satire, about a presumptuous cyborg who stops at nothing to protect her young human charge (Violet McGraw).
'I tend to be quite scared of horror films, so I didn't get to see it then,' says Sakhno, 27, who plays a military-grade android named Amelia in the new movie. 'But I'm so glad that it came into my world. As soon as I read the script, I was so deeply moved by Amelia in a way that I didn't expect.'
Amelia is, in many ways, the inverse of M3GAN: 'If M3GAN is this '50s-inspired vision of perfection, Amelia is a bit rougher around the edges,' writer/director Gerard Johnstone says. Unlike M3GAN, who is 'stuck in this permanent state of adolescence, Amelia is a full-grown woman and a fighting machine.'

Johnstone discovered Sakhno in the 'Star Wars' series 'Ahsoka,' in which she played Dark Jedi apprentice Shin Hati. 'She just had this magnetism and stillness to her that was so commanding,' he recalls. 'I was like, 'Well, that's Amelia.' '
Get to know more about the 'M3GAN 2.0' breakout:
Ivanna Sakhno is the Ukrainian actress now starring in 'M3GAN 2.0'
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, Sakhno got her start acting as a young girl in Ukrainian films and commercials. She dreamed of coming to Hollywood, and 'quite early on, I realized that I had to find a way to leave my country,' Sakhno says. So at age 13, she moved in with a host family in Vancouver, Canada, where she studied English and enrolled in an acting workshop. A year later, she and her mother relocated to Los Angeles, where she attended Beverly Hills High School.
American food was a major culture shock: 'I remember the Cinnamon Toast Crunch blew my mind,' she says with a laugh. 'The first time I tasted it, my life was never the same.'
But it was also around this time, in 2014, that Russians invaded Eastern Ukraine. At school, she recalls the dissonance of 'seeing kids getting into their parents' cars – Ferraris and the most expensive cars you could imagine – and then simultaneously witnessing what was going on in my motherland. It was quite a stark difference.'
Ivanna Sakhno looked to insects in crafting her AI assassin Amelia
In the U.S., Sakhno has primarily appeared in action projects, including 'Pacific Rim: Uprising,' 'The Spy Who Dumped Me,' 'Ahsoka' and now 'M3GAN 2.0.' But the actress says that's merely a coincidence: Aside from a few childhood ballet classes, she doesn't have an athletic background.
'When you do action roles quite consistently, they kind of pile up on top of one another. There's muscle memory,' Sakhno says. 'I've learned quite a great deal about showing up for yourself through physical work and being present in your body.'
In the lead-up to filming 'M3GAN 2.0,' the rising star worked extensively with Johnstone and movement coach Luke Hawker to find Amelia's physicality. She practiced tai chi and breathwork, and closely studied nature.
'They made me feel welcome to bring my own vision of her,' Sakhno says. 'We took a bit of inspiration from insects – in particular, the praying mantis. There's a stillness, but also a precision in the way it moves.'
How the late David Lynch inspired the Hollywood newcomer
Sakhno has also dipped into other mediums outside of film: She appeared in Hulu's rom-com series 'High Fidelity' opposite Zoë Kravitz, and co-starred with Hozier in his 'Eat Your Young' music video. She's had a lifelong passion for painting, and believes she would focus on that if she weren't acting.
'I can't say I'm necessarily a great painter, but I cherish getting to learn about the present moment through painting,' she says. "Not to be too pretentious – forgive me – but I legitimately could see myself being more integrated into advocacy work. It was something I was led into through the history of my country, and like every Ukrainian, I feel dedicated to it.'
Moving forward, the up-and-comer says that 'M3GAN 2.0' has made her rethink how she uses technology: 'Amelia represents what happens when we create something powerful without fully thinking through the consequences.' She now tries to stay away from her phone as much as possible, save for her favorite transcendental meditation app.
'I try to (meditate) 20 minutes in the morning and 20 in the evening,' Sakhno explains. 'David Lynch was a great inspiration, and I started doing it after his passing. I have such great respect for him, and obviously, he's a legend in his own right. He's definitely raising the vibration for all of us collectively.'

‘F1' Tops Box Weekend Office Charts And Could Become Apple Studios' Biggest Hit
Topline 'F1,' Apple Original Films' new Formula One racing movie starring Brad Pitt, topped the box office charts over the weekend—the first major hit in theaters for the tech giant's film and television production studios. "F1" Director Joseph Kosinski and stars Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, and Damson Idris arrive at the ... More film's premiere. 2025 Invision Key Facts 'F1' grossed $55.6 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to advance numbers published in multiple Hollywood trade publications, as well as an additional $88.4 million worldwide and $10 million from previews. The movie has still not earned back its hefty budget of $200 million, and will need to keep drawing viewers to theaters in the upcoming weeks to make a profit. 'M3GAN 2.0,' the sequel to the surprise 2022 horror hit 'M3GAN,' bombed at its opening weekend, bringing in only $10.2 million at the box office and finishing behind holdovers including 'How To Train Your Dragon.' Key Background Apple Studios has produced several noteworthy films in the past five years, including Martin Scorsese's over three-hour-long 'Killers of the Flower Moon' and the 2021 Best Picture winner 'CODA.' However, many of those films did not profit or even break even based off box office sales alone. Scorsese's film raked in $158.8 million at the box office, far from its estimated budget of over $200 million. Apple's highest-grossing film so far was Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon' in 2023, another historical epic that cost $130 million-$200 million to produce. 'Napoleon' only grossed $228 million at the box office, and 'F1' is on track to outpace the film after its stellar opening weekend. Tangent Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously said that the company's significant investment in film and television is not directly related to its core business—selling consumer electronics. 'I don't have it in my mind that I'm going to sell more iPhones because of it,' Cook told Variety in June. However, the company does appear to be using its large network of buyers to help promote 'F1.' IPhone owners across the U.S. received push notifications over the weekend offering users a $10 discount if they purchase two tickets through ticketing service Fandango. Big Number Apple tapped director Joseph Kosinski and legendary producer Jerry Buckheimer for the project—the team behind the 2022 hit 'Top Gun: Maverick,' which grossed over $1.2 billion at the box office worldwide. Surprising Fact 'F1' already made back some of its money in a way familiar to fans of the racing fans—brand sponsorships. 'F1' producers sold naming rights to real brands for the fictional APXGP racing team, putting brands like Mercedes and Geico on Brad Pitt's car and racing suit. This move brought in an estimated $40 million for the film, producer David Leener told Forbes.

Dick Van Dyke drops out of event for health: 'Today is not a good day'
Dick Van Dyke was forced to drop out of a public appearance this weekend amid a "bad" day for the 99-year-old Hollywood legend. On Saturday, June 28, the "Mary Poppins" star's wife, Arlene Silver, took the stage at Vandy Camp, his comedy event and fan gathering, to inform attendees that Van Dyke was "not up to" attending as planned. "I'm sorry," she said. "When you're 99-and-a-half years old, you have good days and bad days, and when you're 40 years old, you have good days and bad days. Unfortunately, today is not a good day for him, and he's sick that he can't be here." USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Van Dyke. Vandy Camp is described as a "celebration" featuring Van Dyke, Silver and their musical group The Vantastix. The event honors the actor's "passion for comedy, vaudeville and the circus." The third iteration was streamed online, and Silver told the crowd that Van Dyke would be tuning in from home. During a Q&A portion, she asked fans in the audience to "tell Dick, who's watching, what he means to you." Directly addressing him, one attendee said, "We all are very inspired by you and what you do," while another added, "Get well soon, Dick." Silver also said she was "pretty confident" that Van Dyke would return to attend the next Vandy Camp event. In 2024, Van Dyke made history by becoming the oldest Daytime Emmys award winner ever, taking home a statue for a guest performance on "Days of Our Lives" at age 98. "I'm the oldest nominee in history," he said at the time. "I can't believe it. I've been playing old men all my life. If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!" He added in his Emmys speech, "I'm 98 years old, can you believe it? This really tops off a lifetime of 80 years in the business. I love you. God bless."
