Sizzling weather makes 2025 the year of the midweek BBQ (and we're eating healthier too)
Barbecues were once reserved for the weekend but 2025's brilliant weather has led to more Brits than ever firing up the barbie midweek.
More than three-quarters of us (78%) believe that BBQs are no longer just a weekend pursuit, according to research by plant-based food firm Beyond Meat (www.beyondmeat.com/en-GB/) to mark National Barbecue Week this week.
This is a recent trend, coinciding with our recent warmer summers, with more than half (53%) admitting they enjoy a BBQ from Tuesday to Thursday more often than they did two years ago.
Lighting up the BBQ midweek isn't the only way our summer dining habits are changing as 42% of those surveyed said they are eating less animal meat during the week than they did in 2023.
Meanwhile, more than half (58%) said they now cook healthier dishes, with 47% reporting that having plant-based options on the menu is important to them, and a similar number agreeing cooking plant-based meat on a barbecue supports a balanced lifestyle.
Ellie Stevens, Senior Brand Manager GB at Beyond Meat, said: "Midweek BBQing gives a great excuse to get outside and create delicious plant-based meals."
As for our favourite plant-based meal to cook on the barbie? It's corn on the cob that is our choice by a mile, with 51% saying they love cooking it. Vegetarian kebabs (32%) are second, with a plant-based burger third (31%).

To coincide with National BBQ Week, GP and influencer Dr Divya Sharma, aka 'Doctor Bowl', has shared her favourite recipe.
"Al fresco cooking is a brilliant way to get out in the fresh air, connect and experiment with plant-based foods in a new and exciting way," she explains. "Plant-based meat, such as the Beyond Burger, are high in protein and lend themselves to a whole host of mid-week dishes beyond the traditional bun."
Her 'Beyond Burger Bowl' is made with Beyond Meat patties, roasted potatoes, and a vibrant salad - perfect for healthy midweek eating. The recipe is below:
Ingredients (Serves 2)
· 2 Beyond Burger patties
· 1 Maris Piper potato, cubed
· 1 tsp chilli flakes
· 1 tbsp olive oil
· Handful of lettuce leaves
· 2 large tomatoes, chopped
· Cucumber, sliced
· 1 tbsp red onion, finely chopped
· ½ avocado, cubed
For the dressing:
· 1 tbsp mayonnaise
· 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
· 1 tsp mustard
Method
· Preheat your oven to 200c or air fryer at 180c
· Place your cubed potatoes into a prepared oven dish
· Add the oil, chilli flakes and some salt and pepper. Mix well
· Roast for 45 minutes in the oven or air fryer for 20 minutes
· Slice your Beyond Meat burgers into small bite-size pieces
· Barbecue the burgers for 8-10 minutes, flipping frequently until cooked through
· Mix the dressing ingredients together in a small bowl
· Add your chopped salad to the bowl, along with the roasted potatoes and Beyond Meat burgers
· Drizzle over your dressing and enjoy!

There's a way to roll back the clock on your biological age — and, according to a new(ish) study, you can do it on your daily walk. No frills, no nonsense, just a small tweak for big results. We already know there are many benefits to walking, including a boost to your cardiovascular health, stronger muscles, bones and joints, ramped up calorie burn, a healthier metabolism and better mood and emotional wellbeing. If that's not enough, research straight out of Britain has shown that one particular aspect of your walks could supercharge your results, including reducing your biological age by up to 16 years. Yep, you read that correctly. And no, it's not 10,000 steps, a weighted vest, or walking backwards. This is the one thing you need to know the next time you lace up a pair of the best hiking boots and head out. Research, published in Nature in 2022, found that your speed could play a role in cutting your biological age. The study assessed over 400,000 Brits and biological age (how quickly you're aging based on chemical markers) and found that speed made a difference. Results showed that those with a steady to average and brisk walking pace 'had significantly longer LTL compared with slow walkers.' LTL, meaning leucocyte telomere length, is a marker of biological age. Using 'accelerometer-assessed measures of physical activity,' the researchers found associations between longer LTL and 'habitual activity intensity,' rather than total amount of activity. While it's true that the more you move during the day, the better for your metabolism and overall health, we now know that you don't need 10,000 steps every day to maximize it; as little as 7,000 steps per day could be enough! But if you plan to track your step count, making your walk more brisk could be more beneficial across the same distance than an amble. That said, I love a slow walk, and recently took up intuitive walking to boost mindfulness, so I'm a firm believer in a time and place for everything. Given that brisk walking, like power walking, can have a positive impact on weight management and cardiovascular fitness, it checks out that this could also improve your biological age, too. So what about speed? The study used self-reported walking pace, providing participants with a touchscreen Q&A and response options of 'slow,' 'steady/average,' or 'brisk.'Slow pace was defined as less than 3mph, steady pace was between 3 -4mph and brisk walking was over 4mph. There you have it. A faster walking pace is associated with longer LTL, potentially cutting up to 16 years off your biological age. The study showed that brisk walkers had a biological age of up to 16 years younger, and that brisk walking could lead to a younger biological age rather than the other way around. The study also suggests that time spent habitually in higher-intensity activities like brisk walking had a stronger association with biological age than the total amount of walking or distance. All in all, this supports the idea that more intensive and habitual movement, like increased walking pace, can impact biological markers and overall health. And better still, if you increase your pace, even a short walk could boost longevity.

Heatwave Mounjaro warning issued for millions as temperatures soar
As the UK braces itself for a heatwave over the next few weeks, with temperatures expected to reach 32C, patients using weight loss medication such as Mounjaro have been issued essential advice by pharmacists. It's estimated that around 1.5 million Brits are now taking weight-loss drugs, with numbers increasing each week. The last year has seen a huge increase in the number of people taking GLP-1 receptor agonists, some prescribed by the NHS and others by private doctors, with common injectibles including semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic), tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and liraglutide (Saxenda). As the temperatures rise, experts are stressing that users must store weight loss injections in a refrigerator (2-8°C or 36-46°F), especially after starting the course. The advice for the UK heatwave is also also worth noting for those heading on holiday or travelling during the warmer weather. However, if you're flying, remember to pack your injections in your carry-on since the baggage hold on a plane can plummet to below-freezing temperatures. Finding the right temperature for your pen is important: not too hot or too cold. If you inject after incorrectly storing your pen, it might not be safe for use. "There are a few important things to consider when checking if your weight loss pen is safe to use," says James. "Inspect the pen to ensure it is not damaged and the medicine inside is clear, with no particles or cloudiness. The liquid should be colourless or slightly yellow. If you have left your pen unrefrigerated during hot weather and are unsure whether it is still safe to use, always consult your prescriber before injecting. "Staying hydrated whilst taking weight loss injections is key. Weight loss injections can cause side effects such as nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and dizziness, which, without sufficient fluids, can lead to dehydration. "We recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even when you're not thirsty. If experiencing diarrhoea or vomiting, try using electrolyte drinks, rehydrate quickly and apply sunscreen whenever you are outdoors. This will help those who suffer from heightened sensitivity to UV rays.' Yes. Travel insurance providers are warning that the growing number of Brits turning to these breakthrough drugs for weight management could lose their cover and face huge medical bills abroad if they don't declare their usage when arranging travel insurance. Many don't want to admit they are taking the weight-loss drugs, or think that if they buy it privately, it doesn't need to be declared. Niraj Mamtora, director at Forum Insurance, says: 'Weight-loss medications like Ozempic are transforming lives across the UK, but too many travellers don't realise the insurance implications. If you're using these drugs, you must declare both the medication and the condition it's prescribed for. 'Failure to do so is not a minor oversight - it's a serious breach of your travel insurance contract. If you need medical help overseas and haven't declared your medication, your claim can be refused and your policy cancelled. The financial consequences can be severe.' Why we're all eating dinner later and how it affects our health
Sitting down for dinner around 7pm has been a part of the average Briton's daily schedule since forever, but new reports suggest a later dinnertime is becoming more popular. The phenomenon of late-night dinners comes as nightlife in London and across the UK continues to decline. According to data from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), the UK lost more than a third (37%) of its nightclubs between 2020 to 2024. On top of rising operational costs, the blow to nightlife came as the cost of living crisis led Brits to spend less on going out. But those of us who still want to go out and stay out late have begun turning to restaurants to satisfy the itch for a good night out, and restaurants have responded by extending opening hours and allowing dinner bookings past 10pm. First reported by British GQ, the shift to eating into the night emulates the habits of our European neighbours. In Spain, for example, most people only sit down for their evening meal after 9pm – and it's not uncommon to be eating dinner as late as 11pm. But what happens to your body when you start eating later at night? We take a closer look at what the science of late-night eating says. Some studies suggest that eating before bed could be beneficial for people with diabetes, as this can help stabilise blood sugar levels as they sleep. According to The Sleep Foundation, if a diabetic person's blood sugar levels drop too low while they are asleep, they may experience nightmares or night sweats, and can wake up feeling feeling irritable, confused, or tired. However, that's not to say that eating a full, heavy meal is necessarily the way to go. Instead, scientists say eating small, nutrient-dense snacks can help maintain blood sugar balance. Eating later could also help you fall asleep faster, particularly if you're eating foods high in the amino acid tryptophan, or hormones serotonin or melatonin. For example, fish, nuts and seeds are high in melatonin, while eggs, cheese and tofu have high levels of serotonin. Foods that are high in tryptophan include meats like turkey, chicken and beef. Feeling full and satisfied can also help you drift off to sleep. If you're prone to acid reflux, then eating less than two to three hours before bedtime is a bad idea, wrote Jill Chodak, registered dietitian at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid travels up towards the throat, and can be worse when laying down. According to Chodak, eating within two to three hours of bedtime can trigger acid production in the stomach. "Lying down shortly after eating may cause acid to move up into the oesophagus, leading to discomfort and irritation," she added. Many people also report having nightmares when they eat late at night, although there are no definitive studies to explain the phenomenon. However, experts from Harvard Medical School suggest that eating a large meal, especially a high-carbohydrate meal right before going to bed, could trigger night sweats as the body generates heat while metabolising food. This can cause discomfort and sleep disruption, which for some people may manifest in the form of nightmares. Several studies have warned that chowing down late at night can increase the risk of weight gain, and in some people, the risk of obesity. A 2022 study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found that people who eat later at night burn calories slower and become more prone to fat growth. The study's senior author Frank Scheer, Harvard Medical School professor of medicine, said: "Previous research by us and others had shown that late eating is associated with increased obesity risk, increased body fat, and impaired weight loss success. We wanted to understand why." First author Nina Vujović, a researcher in the Medical Chronobiology Program, added: "In this study, we asked does the time that we eat matter when everything else is kept consistent. "And we found that eating four hours later makes a significant difference for our hunger levels, the way we burn calories after we eat, and the way we store fat." Eating foods that are high in sugar can also increase the risk of diabetes. In people who are already diabetic, it can contribute to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). However, it's important to understand that a number of factors can also contribute to these increased risks and eating late at night is not the sole cause.
