Temple politics in Bengal: How Mamata Banerjee is trying to counter BJP's 'Jai Ma Kali' push

Time of India4 days ago
NEW DELHI: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is often accused of appeasement politics by her opponents, seems to be charting new waters to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the political temperatures rise ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly election.
In the recent bypoll in Nadia's Kaliganj assembly segment, BJP, which although lost the election, felt that the party had significant takeaway from the results - consolidation of Hindu votes.
"We have been able to reap the benefits of assimilating Hindu votes in the region. The effort has paid off since we have received an overwhelming majority of votes from Hindu-dominated areas like Palassey," Suvendu Adhikari, leader of opposition, said.
This perhaps explains Mamata's recent visible tilt towards soft Hindutva as she tries to do a course correction. With the grand inauguration of Rs 250 crore Jagannath Dham in April, and now the announcement of 'Durga Angan' project, Mamata is signaling a deliberate recalibration of her ideological narrative, long dominated by BJP.
The 'Durga Angan' gambit
With the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections looming, the chief minister has moved to the heart of the state's cultural and religious identity with her announcement to create 'Durga Angan', a grand year-round temple complex dedicated to Ma Durga.

"Just as we developed Jagannath Dham, we will create 'Durga Angan' so that people can visit and experience it throughout the year," the TMC chief said.
Interestingly, the announcement comes at a time when BJP is swiftly invoking Bengal centric religious symbols like 'Jai Ma Kali' and 'Jai Ma Durga' in its campaign narrative.
On July 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invoked the Goddesses at the beginning of his speech in Durgapur as he said that BJP is the only party that truly respects and protects Bengali 'ashmita' (pride).
Later Banerjee, targeting PM directly during Martyrs' Day rally asked: "Why is it that you suddenly start remembering Ma Kali and Ma Durga only during the elections? Ma Durga is our revered goddess, and Durga Puja has even received international recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Now listen, just as we developed Jagannath Dham, we will create 'Durga Angan' so that people can visit and experience it throughout the year.
"
The CM, however, gave no timeline or details of the project.
BJP slams TMC's Hindu symbolism
Soon after Mamata's announcement, BJP slammed the decision as unconstitutional, alleging misuse of public funds to promote religion and branding it a political ploy to woo Hindu votes traditionally gravitating toward BJP.
Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, asked, "No religious institution - temple, mosque, church or gurudwara - can be built using taxpayers' money."
He accused Mamata of misusing public funds and ignoring constitutional benchmarks.
He further added, "She hasn't read the Constitution, nor does she understand her own religion. She must educate herself before making such statements."
TMC defends its faith credentials
TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta, in rebuttal, pointed out Mamata Banerjee's long-standing spiritual affinity and said, "She performed Kali Puja at home even before entering politics.
Building temples like Jagannath Dham or Durga Angan stems from genuine faith." He also cited prior state support for thousands of grassroots Durga Pujas and securing a Unesco heritage tag for the festival as evidence of the TMC's longstanding cultural engagement.
"She has supported thousands of grassroots Durga Pujas with financial grants and helped secure UNESCO's heritage tag for the festival. She even organises the annual Durga Puja Carnival.
Does that not count? BJP mocks Jagannath Dham as a 'theme park' and now questions her faith, people will judge them," he added.
Why temple projects matter for TMC
In West Bengal, the BJP election campaigns have focused on alleged Muslim appeasement by TMC, drawing support from Hindu voters. This has been especially effective in districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, Nadia, and North 24 Parganas.
As Mamata government fights the aftermath of recent riots in Murshidabad, rapes in Kolkata medical college and B-school, the temple projects help TMC's double strategy of blending soft Hindutva symbolism with welfare-centric politics.
These moves also come at a time when BJP has brought in Samik Bhattacharya, a staunch party loyalist with deep RSS roots to lead BJP state unit president marking a strategic move by the central leadership to stabilise the state unit amid internal rifts and prepare it for the 2026 Assembly elections.
Since the BJP's 2021 assembly poll defeat, the organisation has suffered desertions, infighting, and setbacks in the 2023 Panchayat polls, 2024 Lok Sabha elections and recent bypoll in Kaliganj.
In the 2021 assembly elections, TMC secured 48.02% vote share and 215 out of 292 seats, while BJP captured 37.97% but only 77 seats.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, TMC won 29 of 42 seats with approximately 45.76% vote share, up from around 43.3% in 2019; BJP fell to 12 seats with 38.73%, from 40.7% in 2019.
While TMC retains advantage, Mamata's recent turn toward Hindu imagery appears bipartisan in purpose: a fence-mending strategy with Hindu voters while reinforcing her base among minority groups and welfare beneficiaries.
As Banerjee positions herself at the cross-section of symbolism and state resources, her gamble may well be to preempt BJP's Hindutva allure. For now, the electoral arithmetic still favors TMC, but the game is tightening.
In Bengal's increasingly polarised politics, religious symbolism is now a shared battlefield, and Mamata is choosing to play offense.

2 months since his death, Agniveer's ashes yet to be immersed; kin await ‘martyr' status amid Punjab govt silence

Over two months after the cremation of Agniveer Akashdeep Singh, 20, who died of a bullet injury while on duty in Jammu on May 15, his family has refused to immerse his ashes in protest against the 'government's indifference'. The grieving family in Kothe Chahal village in Faridkot's Kotkapura says they are still waiting for Akashdeep to be officially recognised as a martyr, and for the compensation routinely granted to the families of soldiers who die in the line of duty. On Friday, Akashdeep's parents, accompanied by members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Sidhupur), held a protest march through the streets of Faridkot that culminated in a sit-in demonstration inside the district administrative complex. They also submitted a memorandum to Punamdeep Kaur, Deputy Commissioner (DC). Addressing the protesters, BKU (Sidhupur) president and convenor of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political), Jagjit Singh Dallewal said, 'I am shocked by the Punjab Government's apathetic response. It has been 70 days since this son of the soil was cremated, and his ashes are yet to be immersed. We sleep in peace because the Army guards our borders. And when one of them dies in uniform, does he not deserve dignity in death?' He added, 'Neither the Centre nor the State has spoken. It is unbelievable — how can we be so stone-hearted? People had protested against this Agnipath scheme right in the beginning and see the condition of the families of these soldiers.' Akashdeep reportedly died of a self-inflicted bullet wound to the head. His body was brought back in an ambulance and cremated on May 16. Though local MLA and Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan visited the family multiple times, the state government has made no announcement regarding compensation or his martyr status. The silence has only deepened the family's pain. On Friday, Akashdeep's father, Balwinder Singh — a long-time AAP supporter — sat under the scorching sun wearing a black turban. His mother Karamjit Kaur, draped in a white dupatta, remained silent, her eyes questioning the system. 'What was my fault in sending my young son to the armed forces?' she had asked earlier. Flex sheets at the protest site read: 'Akashdeep Amar Rahe (Long live Akashdeep)', 'Akashdeep nu shaheed da darza deo (Declare him a martyr)', and 'Akashdeep nu insaaf deo (Justice to Akashdeep)'. The family handed over the memorandum to the DC along with Dallewal, but chose not to speak at the protest. Earlier, in a conversation with The Indian Express, Balwinder had said, 'We are upset with the Punjab government's approach. No announcement has been made. Speaker Sandhwan came to our house and attended the cremation, but there has been no word from the Chief Minister (Bhagwant Mann).' The family was particularly hurt that even the DC did not visit their home — only a tahsildar was present during the cremation. 'My son died while on duty,' Kaur had said. 'People who die after drinking spurious liquor get Rs 10 lakh compensation and government jobs for their families. But my brave son, who left his BCom studies to serve the nation, has not even been acknowledged.' Kaur added that the family will not immerse Akashdeep's ashes until he is honoured as a martyr. 'What is the purpose of the Agniveer scheme if those who die in service are not even recognised?' The case has drawn comparisons to the first death of an Agniveer in India – Amritpal Singh, 19, who died by suicide in October 2023 in Punjab's Mansa. That incident had snowballed into a major political issue, following which chief minister Mann personally visited the family, announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had then declared that the Punjab government stood with its soldiers even when the Centre failed. 'The contrast in treatment is shocking,' said Harvipan Singh, block president of BKU (Sidhupur). 'Why this silence in Akashdeep's case?' Asked about the status of the family's demands, the DC said, 'We are forwarding the memorandum to the Chief Minister's Office. So far, we haven't received any feedback.' Meanwhile, Akashdeep's ashes remain as a symbol of the family's pain and a government that appears to look the other way.

UP Minister protests false FIR against BJP workers in Kanpur

Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Minister Pratibha Shukla staged a dharna at a police station in Kanpur Dehat , demanding action against an SHO for allegedly filing a false case under the SC/ST Act against BJP workers. The protest, which lasted five hours, prompted the removal of the local police outpost in-charge and a departmental inquiry against the SHO, officials said. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Yogi Adityanath government over police actions in the state. He also took potshots at Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak as he shared a video on X of the minister's purported video call with Shukla's husband, who expressed displeasure over the situation. Shukla, the Minister of State for Women's Welfare and Child Development, accused SHO Satish Singh of lodging a fabricated case under the SC/ST Act against BJP workers, calling it a 'deliberate attempt' to target them. 'This is not a previous Samajwadi regime. This is Yogi's government, and false and fabricated cases against BJP workers will not be tolerated,' Shukla told officials and media at the spot. Despite repeated efforts by Circle Officer (Sikandara) Priya Singh to persuade the minister to end the dharna, including a request to walk inside the SHO's chamber to speak to Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) Arvind Mishra, Shukla remained firm. 'Let the SP come out and speak in front of everyone,' she said, insisting that the matter be addressed publicly. 'I have never filed a police complaint in the last 25 years. But today, it's a matter of respect. I want to know under whose pressure this case was filed,' she asked the SP and DM. The protest was called off only after SP Arvind Mishra announced the removal of the local police outpost in-charge and ordered an inquiry against SHO Satish Singh, District Magistrate (Kanpur Dehat) Alok Singh told PTI. Additional SP Rajesh Pandey has been tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry and submitting a fact-finding report to the SP at the earliest. The ASP will examine the circumstances under which the cross FIR was lodged under the SC/ST Act and ensure that the investigation proceeds based strictly on facts, the DM added. During the protest, Shukla was joined by her husband and former MP Anil Shukla Warsi, who was purportedly seen talking to a senior Cabinet minister in the government, expressing displeasure over the situation. In a purported video which went viral, he was seen having an intense conversation with the senior Cabinet minister and he was heard saying: 'Were not you made the deputy CM to protect Brahmins? And now fake cases are being registered against them - they (BJP workers) are being abused and are just supposed to keep voting for you? This won't go on,' before the call ended abruptly. Yadav took a jibe on the BJP over the matter. In a post on X, he, without naming Pathak, said, 'DCM sir, first focus on your own people, then give advice to others. Earlier, there was only one DCM (Keshav Maurya) who was reprimanded, now both are reprimanded.' In another post, he took potshots at the Adityanath dispensation, saying, 'The ruling state minister herself is staging protest against her own police's actions, does the chief minister want anymore evidence?' According to officials, the controversy began after a road construction project was halted by local municipal councillor Shamshad Khan, prompting the minister's intervention. On Tuesday, an FIR was filed against Khan (corporator, Kanshiram Nagar) by contractor Zahoor Ahmad, alleging extortion, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult. On Thursday, Baburam Gautam filed a counter FIR against Abrar, Younus, Aslam, Yasir, and Shiva Pandey under various charges, including criminal intimidation, intentional insult, and relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
