Rajkummar Rao REACTS to Maalik–Animal comparisons: 'We're not here to glorify anything...'

Time of India7 hours ago
As the release of 'Maalik' draws near, comparisons with films like 'Animal,' 'Pushpa,' and even 'Khalnayak' have begun to surface especially around the portrayal of violence and morally grey protagonists.
In a chat with Bollywood Bubble, Rajkummar addressed the growing chatter about whether 'Maalik' glorifies violence in the same vein as its cinematic predecessors.
'This is the world of a gangster'
The actor was asked if Maalik also promotes violence and denied promoting brutality, the actor exclusively told Bollywood Bubble, 'I think it's meant for entertainment, nothing else. It's a piece of cinema. As I said earlier, it's meant to be watched, enjoyed, and experienced.
That's about it. We're not here to glorify anything. We're just telling a story.'
He also emphasized that 'Maalik' is not about endorsing brutality but about portraying the psychological and emotional cost of power. He acknowledged that while the film is intense and action-packed, it's plant in character-driven storytelling.
The Animal and Pushpa effect
With 'Animal' and 'Pushpa' setting new benchmarks for violence in a stylish manner and anti-hero narratives, 'Maalik' inevitably enters the same conversation.

But Rajkummar is clear: Maalik may share genre DNA, but it's not a clone.
'Every story has its own soul. We're not trying to replicate anyone. We're telling a story that's raw, real, and rooted in its own world,' he said.
Beyond the bloodshed
Co-star Manushi Chhillar, who has a key part in the film, said that 'Maalik' looks into who has power, heart pain, and the price of big dreams. She talked about the hard parts of playing a less-glam role and why tales from small towns hold more deep feelings.
The bigger picture
Made by Pulkit, 'Maalik' takes place in 1988 Allahabad. It shows how a small hustler grows to be a big, scary gangster. The movie stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saurabh Shukla, and Huma Qureshi - who shows up in a special role. It aims to give a tough, deep story that dives into hard choices.
'Maalik' comes to big screens on July 11, 2025.

Vijay Deverakonda reacts to 'The' tag controversy: "Nobody else got any backlash"

Vijay Deverakonda 's decision to briefly add 'The' before his name during Liger promotions sparked unexpected backlash. Now, in a candid new interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor has addressed the controversy head-on—explaining the thought process behind it, how it was meant to be subtle, and why he ultimately dropped it altogether. 'Nobody Else Gets Backlash' Vijay recalled how the branding became a bigger issue than he ever expected. 'That was one whole situation in itself,' he said. 'There was a crazy amount of backlash because 'The' was added to my name. Interestingly, no other person ever got backlash for something like that.' He pointed out that titles are common across the industry—be it Mega Star, Universal Star, or People's Star. 'People younger than me, older than me, those who debuted before me—everyone has a tagline. I was probably the only one without one. And yet, I'm the one who got called out,' he said, calling the criticism both ironic and unfair. From Reluctance to Realisation The actor explained that it was his marketing team that initially suggested the idea and claimed that he resisted for a long time because "I didn't want a tag. I just wanted to be known by my name,' he said. However, during Liger promotions, media outlets frequently labelled him with varying nicknames like Rowdy Star and Southern Sensation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo That last one, in particular, struck a nerve. Calling it 'limiting,' Vijay said, 'I didn't like being boxed into a region or label.' So, in search of a neutral yet distinctive tag, they landed on 'The Vijay Deverakonda'—something he hoped would feel minimal and unique. But when even that drew unnecessary flak, Vijay decided to strip it all back. 'I told my team—just call me Vijay Deverakonda. That's how I want to be known. Nothing more, nothing less.' A Spy Thriller Comeback Vijay is now turning his focus to 'Kingdom', his upcoming spy thriller directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri (Jersey). Slated for release on July 31, the expectations are high for the film. Vijay Deverakonda's previous impressive outing was in 'Kalki 2898 AD' where he played a cameo. Picture Credit: Facebook Vishnu Manchu 's mythological drama 'Kannappa' was released on June 27, featuring powerhouse cameos by stars like Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, and Kajal Aggarwal . The film managed to generate initial buzz and decent footfalls. However, recent numbers indicate that the film's momentum is gradually easing off. Kannappa Movie Review As per early estimates reported by Sacnilk, 'Kannappa' earned Rs 15 lakh on its 11th day, second Monday, bringing its total box office collection to Rs 32.08 crore. After a promising opening week, where it collected Rs 30.2 crore across various languages, the film saw a sharp dip in its second weekend. On Day 8, it earned Rs 45 lakh, which was followed by Rs 60 lakh on Day 9. However, Monday's collection suggests a visible drop in audience turnout. On July 7, 2025, 'Kannappa' recorded an overall Telugu occupancy of 16.78%. Morning shows saw a decent start with 18.53%, but the trend didn't hold strong throughout the day. Afternoon and evening shows dipped to 14.99% and 14.50%, respectively, while night shows climbed slightly to 19.11%. The film has modern visuals and has been mainly shot in New Zealand. Vishnu Manchu leads the movie with dedication, supported by Mohan Babu, R. Sarathkumar, Madhoo, Preity Mukhundhan, Mukesh Rishi, Brahmaji, and Brahmanandam in key roles. The movie faced some criticism for its pacing in the first half. The film's devotional climax, powerful performances and impact performances of the cameos, especially of Prabhas, became a key factor in the film's appreciation. An excerpt from the Etimes review for the film reads, "Kannappa scores high on visual and musical impact. Sheldon Chau's cinematography captures the beauty of forested landscapes and celestial moments with finesse, giving the film a rich visual texture. Some of the VFX elements fall short of the film's ambition, but the overall sincerity of the production shines through."
