Mitchell took the position only last July following the departure of Newcastle's previous sporting director, Dan Ashworth, to Manchester United.
Mitchell was leaving 'due to health reasons' and his departure was 'by mutual consent,' Saudi-backed Newcastle said on Tuesday.
There were reports of tension between Mitchell and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe at the start of this season.
Newcastle won the English League Cup in March for their first major domestic trophy in 70 years, and finished in fifth place in the Premier League to qualify for next season's Champions League.
'The club are in great hands on and off the pitch,' Mitchell said, 'and are in a fantastic position to continue building.
'I'd like to wish everyone connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future.'
Mitchell previously worked for Tottenham, Leipzig and Monaco.

Saudi KAUST's Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy Advances Energy Innovation

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), through its Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Storage Technologies (CREST), has launched initiatives to support innovation in energy fields, in alignment with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to transition toward a knowledge-based economy and build sustainable development. These efforts include transforming new ideas into practical solutions, developing prototypes of KAUST inventions and ensuring their reliability, and scaling up these prototypes through collaboration with local and international partners, reported the Saudi Press Agency on Monday. KAUST has leveraged the center's research to boost energy security, reduce environmental impact, create new job opportunities for youth, and continue advancing education, training, and workforce development. These steps aim to support and localize renewable energy research, boost academic and industrial collaboration, and position the center as a leading research hub and a preferred destination for students, researchers, and faculty members. CREST Chair Professor Husam Alshareef stressed that the center's research, focused on prototype development and technology scaling, enhances energy efficiency, reliability, storage, and sustainability. Many projects are based on innovative technologies developed at KAUST in cooperation with industrial partners. These include advanced photovoltaic cells and new battery chemistries that reduce cooling requirements and fire risks in harsh conditions, as well as lithium extraction and battery recycling to ensure a stable lithium supply and enhance the Kingdom's battery sector, he added. The center conducts research on sustainable cooling technologies aimed at improving the performance of electronic devices such as solar panels and LED lights, thereby extending their lifespan, he went on to say. Additional research includes storing energy in chemical fuels and generating electricity, testing and modeling energy storage technologies, and integrating them across disciplines within the university by merging research strategies involving experts in chemistry, engineering, and software development, he revealed.

German club drops Israeli striker over Gaza-linked social media posts

LONDON: German football club Fortuna Dusseldorf has canceled the signing of Israeli striker Shon Weissman following a backlash over his alleged links to controversial social media posts about the war in Gaza. The club confirmed the decision on Tuesday. In a brief statement on X it said: 'We looked into Shon Weissman intensively, but ultimately decided not to sign him.' While the club did not elaborate, German newspaper Bild reported that the decision followed an outcry by fans over Weissman's online comments, some of which were described as 'disrespectful and discriminatory.' The player had already arrived in Dusseldorf and completed his medical checks. News of Weissman's planned move from Spanish side Granada sparked online protests on Monday. Critics said his posts were at odds with Fortuna's values and 'the principles the club stands for and promotes.' The club initially responded to the criticism by defending the player. A post on Fortuna's account published late on Monday said: 'What's going on here? I keep getting messages. Judging people you don't know based on their Wikipedia page? That doesn't reflect our values.' Was geht hier ab? Bekomme im Feierabend eine Benachrichtigung nach der anderen. Grundsätzlich: Menschen, die man nicht kennt, anhand eines Wikipedia-Artikels bewerten?! Passt eigentlich nicht zu unserer Bubble… — Fortuna Düsseldorf (@f95) August 4, 2025 But the post was soon obscured and the club — reportedly aware of the earlier posts — called off the €500,000 ($580,000) deal. Weissman, who has 33 caps for Israel, has been involved in several online controversies in recent years and was unpopular among some Granada supporters. Following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, he allegedly wrote or endorsed multiple inflammatory statements, including calls to 'wipe Gaza off the map' and to 'drop 200 tons of bombs on it,' according to Bild. He also reportedly liked a post that said 'there are no innocents (in Gaza), they don't need to be warned.' In 2023, a prosecutor in Granada received a hate speech complaint related to Weissman's online activity. The player's agent later claimed the posts were made by a social media manager with access to his accounts and were subsequently deleted. This is not the first time the Gaza war has had repercussions in German football. Dutch international Anwar El Ghazi was sacked by Bundesliga side Mainz over comments he made online about the conflict. He later won a wrongful dismissal case against the club, which is currently under appeal. Former Bayern Munich defender and current Manchester United player Noussair Mazraoui also faced a backlash for social media posts expressing solidarity with Palestinians, including one calling for 'victory' for 'our oppressed brothers in Palestine.' He later issued a public apology.
