Residential fire kills 5 near Edwards

Yahoo11-04-2025
Five people, all but one of them minors, died in a residential fire Thursday in Aerial Acres near Edwards, the Kern County Fire Department reported.
A KCFD news release said calls started coming in shortly after midnight, prompting a response by close to two dozen firefighters from Kern County, Edwards Air Force Base and California City.
Firefighters arrived to find a structure in the 18200 block of Claymine Road fully involved with fire and the building behind it about 50% involved. Homes on both sides were threatened by the flames, the release said.
The scene was described as chaotic with neighbors gathered around outside offering conflicting information. KCFD said three minors and one adult were able to escape uninjured but it was not immediately clear whether people were still inside the residence.
Complicating the response was the fact that live electric lines had fallen, posing hazards to firefighters and concerned citizens who were trying to aid in the response. First responders, including the California Highway Patrol, summoned additional firefighting resources and ambulances.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
None of the victims have been officially identified. But a woman living in Bellflower posted on the fundraising website Gofundme.com that her sister, three nieces and one nephew died in the fire.
"I lost 5 people I loved that night," wrote the person who posted the note, Chloe Howard, "and with such a tragic unexpected accident, my family and I are suffering in the end."
Howard is asking for financial help so she can pay to cremate the remains of all five. The request can be viewed online at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-chloe-after-tragic-family-loss?cdn-cache=0.

Fleeing Motorcyclist Walks Away From 100-Plus MPH Crash

Read the full story on The Auto Wire A man fleeing from police at speeds over 100 mph crashed his motorcycle on a Los Angeles highway, then walked away. Actually, he started with walking, then jogged down the side of the road, we guess trying to figure out another way to escape from the seen so many police chases like this one end badly with the suspect and perhaps others dying in a horrific crash. This time it at first looked like the guy was going to be street pizza, but he apparently drove for the slide instead of just the ride and that paid off. Sure, he eventually was caught by police after trying to escape on foot. But that's better than if he had died or been horrifically mangled. At least once he gets out of jail or prison or whatever, he can just keep living his life. Originally, the motorcyclist took off from an attempted traffic stop by California Highway Patrol for speeding. He must have heard if he went fast enough police would just back off. And they did. However, a police helicopter was overhead tracking his every move. That meant he couldn't see the cruisers behind him, but surely he could see he was traveling in one giant spot light. Still, the guy pushed his bike to 140 mph at one point, just weaving through slower traffic and cutting it super close repeatedly. It's a miracle he didn't run into some truck with a steel bumper while he was doing that. Instead, his motorcycle went down in a shower of sparks for a reason we can't perceive. Its possible he hit a rough patch in the pavement, his bike suffered death wobble and he dumped it, or maybe he clipped a car. Whatever it was, all that protective gear he was wearing did its job. This is why you wear that stuff while riding. Image via ABC7 Join our Newsletter, subscribe to our YouTube page, and follow us on Facebook.

Rescuers find missing hiker on third day of search in Lassen County

A hiker who became disoriented on a day hike in Lassen County was rescued after spending three days in the Caribou Wilderness with his dog. His only complaint: He was tired. Otherwise, he was in good health, officials reported. Authorities said the hiker and his dog were reported missing on July 17. Feeling unwell during a day hike, the man planned to stay in the wilderness for the night and head back to his basecamp on Sunday. The hiker called his wife and turned off his phone due to low battery, authorities say. Two Lassen County sheriff's deputies and a sergeant hiked to Beauty Lake in an attempt to find the man and his dog on Saturday. They were unable to locate them and scheduled a second attempt for Sunday, authorities say. With the assistance of California Highway Patrol Helicopter H-4, a deputy and lieutenant responded to an unattended basecamp near Beauty Lake on foot. Finding steep, rocky terrain, authorities were unable to continue the search, according to the sheriff's office. Lassen County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team activated and sent five ground searchers and a two-person horse team to follow. Sheriffs also shared information about the missing hiker with Lassen Volcanic National Park personnel, in the event the hiker attempted to enter the park looking for assistance, authorities said. On Sunday, authorities spotted boot and dog tracks heading into the vegetation northwest of Beauty Lake. Due to nightfall, authorities say they stopped their search and continued Monday morning, with an additional two-person horse team from the Lassen County Sheriff's Posse. On Monday morning, a new search inside Lassen Volcanic Park began with additional assistance from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue, a helicopter from the Washoe County's Regional Aviation Enforcement Unit and U.S. Forest Service personnel, authorities say. The helicopter crew located the missing hiker and his dog 1.9 miles northwest of his basecamp on Monday morning, sheriffs say. They provided food and water as the sheriff's posse responded to the location on horseback, authorities say. The missing hiker and dog were led to the Beauty Lake basecamp safely. The missing hiker denied medical assistance, according to the Lassen County Sheriff's Office.
