Hike in rates for midday meals in schools may improve what's on the plate, say teachers

Time of India20-06-2025
Pune: Teachers have said that the central govt's decision to increase the money for procuring material for PM POSHAN Scheme (midday meals) in schools is beneficial. There was much hue and cry that the per-student cost of the meal provided was less and it was affecting the quality of food.
Self-help groups complained that the rates provided by the govt were not enough to match the huge increase in the prices of fuel and cooking oil.
The revised rate per student has been fixed at Rs 6.78 (an increase of Rs 1.81) for Std I to V, and Rs 10.17 (an increase of Rs 2.72) for Std VI to VIII.
"Earlier, in smaller schools where just one person cooks the food and we keep the cooking material in the kitchen shed, we had to pay from our pockets to provide for oil and spices.
But the revised rate, effective from this academic year, will improve the quality of food provided to students," Vijay Kombe, state president of Maharashtra State Primary Teachers' Association, said.
Mahendra Ganpule, spokesperson for Maharashtra School Principals' Federation, said that the rates should be increased when food prices go up so that the quality of food given to students by centralized kitchens or self-help groups is not affected.
The central govt notification said that they enhanced the material cost by 9.5% on the basis of the inflation index provided by the labour bureau.
The PM POSHAN Scheme is a centrally sponsored scheme under which one hot cooked meal is served to 11.20 crore students in Balvatika and Std I to VIII, in 10.36 lakh government and government-aided schools on all school days.

Model house for Wayanad landslide survivors set to be ready in a month

T'puram: As the first anniversary of the Mudakkai-Chooralmala landslide approaches, the state govt is set to complete the construction of a model house for survivors of the disaster. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the construction of the model house five months ago. The house will be ready in a month. The painting work is underway. If the rain doesn't cause any delays, the house will be completed this month, said a press release. The construction of a township for the survivors is also progressing rapidly. At Elston Estate, 410 houses are being built for 1,662 people across five zones. There are 140 houses in the first zone, 51 in the second, 55 in the third, 51 in the fourth, and 113 in the fifth. The single-story buildings, covering 1,000sqft, are designed to withstand natural disasters and are built with a foundation that can support an additional floor in the future. Each house includes a master bedroom, two additional rooms, a sit-out, living room, study room, dining area, kitchen and storage area. In addition to the houses, the township will feature public roads, a health centre, an anganwadi, a public market and community centres. The health centre will be equipped with a laboratory, pharmacy, examination-vaccination-observation rooms, OP, and ticket counter facilities. The market will have shops, stalls, an open market, a play area for children and parking facilities. The community centre will include a multipurpose hall, play area, library, sports club and open-air theatre, said the release. The govt began construction the day after acquiring Elston Estate's land on April 11. 6 lakes in Mys to be rejuvenated using development cess

Mysuru: In a significant step towards ecological restoration, the Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) is set to rejuvenate six lakes across Mysuru, utilising Rs 40 crore collected as lake development cess over the past two years. This fund, which remained unutilised, will now be deployed to restore major waterbodies, including Dalvoy lake, Hinkal lake, Huyilalu lake, and Vajamangala lake. The decision was taken by the Lake Development Committee chaired by deputy commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy, with MDA receiving formal approval to initiate the ambitious lake revival project. Dalvoy lake, spread over 134 acres near Mandakalli on the Mysuru-Nanjangud Road, will receive the largest share of Rs 15 crore. The project includes large-scale desilting, bund strengthening, chain-link fencing, landscaped walkways, culverts, ornamental arches, solar-powered fountains, decorative lighting, and public amenities like rest areas and toilets. Huyilalu lake (13.3 acres), Hinkal lake (5.9 acres), Devanur lake (12.4 acres), and lakes in Bugathagalli, Vajamangala, and Nadanahalli will each receive Rs 5 crore for rejuvenation. The scope of work includes jungle clearance, desilting, crash barriers, revetments, contour bunds, fencing, interlocking tiles, steps, and cattle ramps. A total of 13 lakes are proposed for development, but the MDA will initially focus on four key lakes, with tenders expected to be floated within 15-20 days after securing administrative approval from the state govt. Plans to improve aesthetics Speaking to TOI, KR Rakshit, commissioner, MDA, said, "This project will not only restore water storage capacity and improve aesthetics but also create a healthy ecosystem for birds and a recreational environment for the public. We are starting with four lakes and will scale up as approvals are received." Apart from large lakes, smaller waterbodies across Mysuru will also be revived under this initiative, aiming to combat encroachment, improve biodiversity, and promote sustainable urban development. KM Jayaramaiah, former member of the Karnataka Lakes Conservation and Development Authority, said, "I welcome the initiative of district administration in taking up the rejuvenation of lakes in Mysuru. The money which is being collected for the protection of lakes is rightly being used, and due to this, encroachment of lakes can also be minimised. I appreciate the concern of MDA towards this project." While major waterbodies like Kukkarahalli lake, Karanji lake, and Lingambudi lake receive attention, the authorities are now focusing on the preservation of the lakes in the city's outskirts, which are seeing rapid growth with several private players developing layouts. The authorities are planning to focus on lake preservation to ensure that they remain intact before it is too late.
