Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the construction of the model house five months ago. The house will be ready in a month.
The painting work is underway. If the rain doesn't cause any delays, the house will be completed this month, said a press release.
The construction of a township for the survivors is also progressing rapidly. At Elston Estate, 410 houses are being built for 1,662 people across five zones.
There are 140 houses in the first zone, 51 in the second, 55 in the third, 51 in the fourth, and 113 in the fifth.

Each house includes a master bedroom, two additional rooms, a sit-out, living room, study room, dining area, kitchen and storage area.
In addition to the houses, the township will feature public roads, a health centre, an anganwadi, a public market and community centres. The health centre will be equipped with a laboratory, pharmacy, examination-vaccination-observation rooms, OP, and ticket counter facilities. The market will have shops, stalls, an open market, a play area for children and parking facilities. The community centre will include a multipurpose hall, play area, library, sports club and open-air theatre, said the release.
The govt began construction the day after acquiring Elston Estate's land on April 11. Of the 298 people who died in the disaster, financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh each, totalling Rs 13.21cr, was distributed to the families of 220 victims from the state disaster relief fund and the chief minister's relief fund. Emergency posthumous financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each was provided to 1,036 families, totalling Rs 1.03cr.

Kerala to give homes to more survivors of Wayanad landslides
Wayanad/Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 30 (PTI) The Kerala government will provide houses to 49 more people who lost their homes in last year's devastating landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad district, bringing the total number of rehabilitation beneficiaries to 451. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday and announced by Revenue Minister K Rajan at a memorial meeting in Meppadi in Wayanad on the first anniversary of the disaster, which claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed homes, shops and farmland. The state will also compensate traders who lost shops, commercial buildings, rental properties, goods and other assets, the minister said. Survivors needing ongoing medical care will continue to receive support until December 31, with Rs 6 crore set aside from the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. A memorial will be built at the 'heartland" of Puthumala for Rs 93.93 lakh, with work starting before Onam. Rajan said hearings had been completed for more than 100 applicants seeking inclusion in the housing list. Those eligible will be added after verification, while others may be covered under different schemes for disaster survivors. Field inspections will begin in August. For tribal rehabilitation, the government has identified five hectares of land in the new Vellarimala village in Meppadi, where houses will be built for 13 families. Each will get a house and 10 cents of land. A committee of officials and experts will fix compensation for affected traders, the minister said. Rajan said all houses in the Elston township should be completed by December 31 if rains do not cause delays. The minister said the government's aim is to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation plan that embraces survivors and is open to any kind of social auditing. 'There may be shortcomings — we can discuss them. The government is moving forward by considering everything," he said. He also praised local residents who, before state and central rescue teams arrived, carried out 'near-impossible" rescue efforts that saved many lives. The event was attended by Ministers O R Kelu and T Siddique, District Panchayat President Samshad Marakkar, Meppadi Grama Panchayat President K Babu, senior officials and representatives of political parties. Meanwhile, the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also decided to grant compensation to victims of the landslide disaster in Vilangad in Kozhikode, similar to that provided to those affected by the Chooralmala disaster. 'Livelihood compensation will be provided on the recommendation of the District Collector, and financial assistance will also be given for medical treatment," a release from the Chief Minister's Office said. Independence Day brings the Zifo Open Quiz to the city
When we speak on the phone, Dr Navin Jayakumar, ophthalmologist and quizmaster, is sifting through hundreds of questions, carefully choosing those that he will ask the gladiators of knowledge who will gather on August 15 for what is arguably Chennai's most well-known quiz. 'Chennai has a magnificent tradition of quizzing on Independence Day,' he says, adding, 'From 1994 to 2020 the Landmark Quiz was an event enjoyed by school children, corporates, college students and senior citizens. The quiz was reborn as the Zifo Open Quiz two editions ago with the city's own global scientific informatics leader thrilled to reignite the curiosity. Now everyone knows what the afternoon of August 15 is meant for.' The journey of the Zifo Open Quiz 2025 kicked off in June with a school round for classes IX-XII conducted at their schools. 'This allows a large number of schools to participate among themselves. After the preliminary round, the top two to three teams from each school are chosen based on their scores. They will compete for the best school team and can participate in the general round too. Earlier the top eight made it to the final but now we choose six and for the other two slots hold a semifinal as a qualifier,' says Dr Navin, who has been the quizmaster except for two breaks in between. With its popularity growing over the years, the annual quiz now draws nearly 2,000 participants who battle for top honours and prizes worth Rs. 5 lakh, putting their omnivorous reading to good use. Prizes are also awarded for best team name, school and college teams, corporate team, senior citizen team and family team apart from audience prizes. Initially held at the Narada Gana Sabha hall, the contestants now fill the Music Academy from end to end. To cater to participants from cities such as Berlin, London, Dubai and other Indian cities the organisers have a concierge service where participants can drop off their luggage. 'The quiz idea was always about getting everyone interested and watching it. So the questions have an element of deductive logic and are a mix of the usual science, history, geography and pop culture with content on both India and abroad. It's like working out a crossword puzzle,' says Dr Navin, adding that the old-fashioned questions, such as capitals but asked with a twist, are still the most popular. The Zifo Open Quiz 2025 will be held on August 15, 1.15pm at the Music Academy. For details and registration look up or call +91 8754569948.
