On the eve of Bafana Bafana's international friendly against Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday evening, coach Hugo Broos expresses his satisfaction with the latest crop of players in his squad.
His comments come in the wake of the notable Mamelodi Sundowns absences, currently focused on their preparation for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.
Broos, who has been at the helm of the national team since 2021, articulated his satisfaction with the crop of mostly uncapped players who have stepped up to fill the void.
"This is an exciting time for us," he said. "I am pleased with the commitment and talent shown by these players. Their enthusiasm can only enhance the dynamism of our squad.
"I'm happy with what I saw in the past few days of this new and young group of players, and not only what I saw on the pitch but also outside the pitch.'
The coach acknowledged that initial hesitance among the players is normal, especially as many were meeting for the first time in a national team context.
'It was a little bit quiet in the first few days,' he noted, 'but I think this is normal. There are many new players in the national team; they know each other as opponents, but it's always different when you are in the same team. You see each other from the moment you wake up till the moment you go to sleep.'
With the atmosphere gradually lifting, Broos is keen to unleash the potential of his squad as they prepare to face Tanzania on home soil.
'On the pitch at training, I see a very motivated group, a group that is aware of the opportunity they have got to play for the national team and a group that also knows that with the opportunity they have got now, they have to try and grab it with both hands,' he commended.
Stellenbosch FC defender Fawaaz Basadien, the appointed captain for this pivotal game, is hoping for a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of their previous encounter in the same stadium. Reflecting on that unforgettable day, Basadien noted: 'The last time we played here in Polokwane, we played in a packed stadium, so I expect the same, and hopefully, the turnout will be exactly like it was the last time we played here.'
The clash against Tanzania will kick off at 19:30 and will serve not only as a platform for new talent but also as a moment of pride for the national team and its supporters.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane's evolution in MLS deserves Hugo Broos' attention

Minnesota United's Bongokuhle Hlongwane may well be asking himself what more he needs to do to convince Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos to bring him back into the national team fold. The 25-year-old Pietermaritzburg-born Hlongwane was back among the goals this weekend, netting the second goal in Minnesota United's 3-3 draw against Club America. Unfortunately, they would go on to lose the game 8-7 on penalties. Sunday's goal brought his tally to two in the last week. He also scored in their impressive 4-1 win over Mexican club Querétaro. The two strikes brought his tally to three goals for the season. It's not been his best season in terms of goals, but he's mainly been used in deeper or more defensive roles, which is a testament to his versatility. Throughout his time in the United States, he's shown countless times that he can be an exciting footballer with an eye for the spectacular. In his inaugural Leagues Cup campaign two years ago, he finished with seven goals, with global superstar Lionel Messi the only player who scored more.

Thembinkosi Lorch faces Sundowns exit after missing pre-season

Thembinkosi Lorch appears to have no future at Mamelodi Sundowns, with sources indicating the former PSL Footballer of the Season is not part of head coach Miguel Cardoso's plans. The Citizen reports that Lorch was among the first casualties following Cardoso's arrival last December, having been loaned to Wydad Casablanca just a month later. Rushine de Reuck also departed during the same window, joining Israeli side Maccabi Petah Tikva on loan. Lorch impressed during his stint at Wydad, particularly with his performances at the Fifa Club World Cup, sparking speculation that he could be reintegrated into the Sundowns setup. However, Phakaaathi understands that Cardoso remains unconvinced and is looking to move in a different direction. The 32-year-old failed to report for pre-season, prompting the Sundowns hierarchy to explore possible exit options. Having signed from Orlando Pirates in a high-profile switch in January 2024, Lorch's move to Chloorkop has ultimately failed to live up to expectations. He is currently training on his own while plotting his next move, believed to be in North Africa. Cardoso, who has consistently expressed a preference for a smaller squad, has already approved De Reuck's switch to Simba SC in Tanzania. Lorch is expected to be the next to leave as Sundowns continue to trim their squad for the new season, with other big-name players also expected to depart the Chloorkop-based side.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso addresses player futures amid MTN8 success

Reigning PSL Player of teh Year Lucas Ribeiro of Mamelodi Sundowns' was notably absent from the Brazilians' 4-0 mauling of Richards Bay on Sunday in the MTN8. Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has remained diplomatic amid growing uncertainty surrounding the futures of key players Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau following their absence from Sunday's MTN8 quarter-final clash. The Brazilians powered their way into the semi-finals with a commanding 4-0 win over Richards Bay at Lucas Moripe Stadium. A brace from Iqraam Rayners, a stunner from teenage prodigy Siyabonga Mabena, and a deflected own goal by Simphiwe Mcineka, ensured Downs continued their winning start under the Portuguese tactician. Their reward? A two-legged semi-final tie against fierce rivals Orlando Pirates, with Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United set to contest the other side of the draw. But despite the emphatic display, much of the post-match discussion centred around the notable omissions from the matchday squad. Shalulile, Ribeiro and Mudau were all missing, sparking speculation amid ongoing reports linking the trio with moves away from Chloorkop. Shalulile, meanwhile, is said to be in negotiations with Tunisian giants Esperance, while Mudau has yet to commit to a new contract with the defending champions. Cardoso, however, opted for a composed response when questioned on the matter. 'All those things are being sorted out by the club and I'm sure they will be public in proper time,' Cardoso said, after the game. 'I understand what's happening with Lucas, Peter, or Thapelo Morena, who was not here because he had a small injury. But as a coach, I would want to have the team as complete as possible, and all coaches want to receive reinforcements for the new season as quickly as possible.' With Downs already juggling a busy start to the season, Cardoso acknowledged the reality of player movement — but made it clear the standard at Chloorkop will not drop, regardless of who's available. No Ribeiro, No Shalulile, No Mudau.... A bit shocking if you ask me... — Sahil Ebrahim (@sahil_e_) August 3, 2025
