Kota Kinabalu: Karapaw women team captured the 200m women's 12 title at the 40th Melaka International Dragon Boat Festival 2025 held on June 21-22 at the Melaka River. They took home the RM3,000 winning cash prize after finishing ahead of a very strong field in the final race. The team managed by Mariannie Lambert was led and coached by Tonny Gudang with Siti Sakinah as women captain and Jimmy David as steerer. The team members were Dyana Lambert, Rebecca Augustine, Doris Lambert, Cynthia Paulin, Masni Deri, Mariana Erlangga, Laura Gudang, Barbara Gloria, Malindah Sharifuddin, Siti Nursyafikah Lombo and Marcie Londoh. Rebecca Augustine, who is the official spokesperson for the team, said the victory in the 200m event held on the second day was not an easy affair. 'We only came second in the first heat, just milliseconds behind KL Barbarians. However, we managed to bounce in the repechage to qualify for the semi-finals, where we once again had a close battle with KL Barbarians. 'In the final stage, we faced more strong teams including KL Barbarians, Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) and ZWL Phoenix. With every passionate ride, we finally emerged as the women's 200m champions, taking home the trophy and it was a priceless victory for the team,' she said. They also took part in the marathon 8,000m open category on the opening day and were placed 16th out of 20 teams. 'We were the only all-female team competing against the men's and mixed teams in the race. Although the opposing teams' physiques and strategies were vastly different, we rowed with full energy and enthusiasm led by drummer Cynthia Paulin and skipper Jimmy David, and managed to finish the race in 43:31.05, just five minutes behind the champions.' Rebecca added that they are proud to elevate the identity of Sabah by wearing ethnically patterned jerseys featuring Pinokol, Sinimpung and Linangkit motifs symbolising precision, strength and unity, completed with traditional head scarves featuring the Sabah Linangkit motif sponsored by Chanteek Borneo. According to her, their training routines started two years ago include crossfit exercises at Sabah Top Team Penampang in the past and at PX5 Express this year, while rowing takes place in Tuaran. They had recently also won the Kinabalu Phoenix Trophy in the women's 200m event at the Sabah FCAS Dragon Boat Race 2025 in May. Their next competition is at the 11th Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta 2025 to be held in Kuching on October 24-26. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fraser-Pryce qualifies for 9th World Championships

Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Fraser-Pryce won her first world championships medal at Osaka in 2007 — a silver in the 4x100m relay—before going on to win 10 world titles, five of them in the 100m. KINGSTON: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce punched her ticket to a ninth World Championships with a third-placed finish in the 100m at the Jamaican national athletics trials on Friday. Fraser-Pryce, a three-time Olympic gold medallist and 10-time world champion, clocked 10.91sec to finish third in the women's 100m final and secure a berth for the World Championships in Tokyo in September. Tina Clayton won her first national title in a personal best of 10.81 with reigning 200m world champion Shericka Jackson second in 10.88. Tia Clayton, twin sister of Tina, was fastest in the semi-finals but pulled up with an apparent injury in the final. Fraser-Pryce won her first world championships medal at Osaka in 2007 — a silver in the 4x100m relay—before going on to win 10 world titles, five of them in the 100m. In front of a large turnout that included treble world record holder Usain Bolt, she delivered when it mattered most. 'It's been a long journey,' Fraser-Pryce said after the final. 'But it was not about making the team, it was about celebrating the journey and I am grateful for those who have been part of the journey. 'It takes strength and resilience to have made it so far, but it was always a joy and privilege to represent Jamaica and I hope I will leave a legacy of inspiration to every girl who has a dream for achieving more.' In the men's 100m final, Paris Olympics silver medallist Kishane Thompson delivered a blistering 9.75sec (wind .8m/sec), his personal best making him the sixth-fastest performer in history. Only Justin Gatlin (9.74), Asafa Powell (9.72), Yohan Blake (9.69) Tyson Gay (9.69) and world record-holder Bolt (9.58) have gone faster. The 23-year-old, who was beaten by just 0.005sec by Noah Lyles in the 100m final at the Paris Games, sliced two hundredths off his previous career best of 9.77 set in June of 2024. Oblique Seville shrugged off concern over a tight hamstring to finish second in 9.83 and Ackeem Blake was third in a personal best of 9.88. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Japan's former star Momota returns at Lin Dan Cup

Kento Momota of Japan featured in the tournament poster. PETALING JAYA: Former world No. 1 men singles shuttler Kento Momota is set to make a return to competitive badminton at the Lin Dan Cup in Xian, China from July 25-27. The 30-year-old great from Japan has been used as one of the main figures in the promotional poster produced by the hosts. The tournament, founded by badminton legend and two-time Olympic Games champion Lin Dan, offers a lucrative total prize purse of 850,000 yuan (approximately RM500,000). Besides Momota, several other foreign names are also slated to compete, including 2019 World Championship bronze medallist Kantaphon Wangcharoen, South Korea's Cho Geon-yeop, Ireland's Nhat Nguyen and Japan's Riki Takei. Malaysia will also be represented at the tournament by Tan Jia Jie and Cheam June Wei. Momota once captivated the badminton world with his remarkable dominance in 2019, winning 11 titles and suffering just six defeats out of 73 matches that year. He also won back-to-back world titles in 2018 (Nanjing) and 2019 (Basel). However, his career took a downturn after a car accident in 2020 following his Malaysian Masters victory, which severely affected his performance. The Japanese star eventually made the difficult decision to retire in April last year at the age of 29.
