Woman dies by suicide after husband slaps her over fighting with his mother

Indian Express2 days ago
Mumbai Police have recently booked a man on charges of abetment to suicide, as his wife died by suicide after he slapped her for fighting with his mother. The accused man had been having frequent fights with his wife and demanding her to bring dowry from her father's home.
Police have also pressed charges of dowry death against him on the complaint of the deceased woman's family.
The woman has been identified as 23-year-old Mamta, who allegedly died at her husband's Sakinaka house on June 28.
Mamta married Rajesh Jokhai Prasad Maurya, 32, a driver by profession in June 2024. This was her second marriage, as she had divorced her first husband.
As per the police complaint, a month after marriage, Maurya told Mamta to borrow money from her father, as he wanted to buy a flat. Her father gave her husband Rs 5 lakh.
However, later Maurya allegedly asked her to bring more money, the police said.
Mamta's younger brother, Shubham Kushwaha, who lives with a relative in Kandivali, in his statement to the police, said that whenever Mamta would speak to family members in their UP village over the phone, she would ask for money and also tell how her husband harassed and assaulted her for dowry.
The police informed her parents, who then informed Mamta's brother in Mumbai to visit her in-laws' place.
The brother went to the Rajawadi hospital, where Maurya told him that she had a fight with his mother, after which he slapped her. Later, she died by suicide, states the FIR.
On Kushwaha's statement, the police booked Maurya under sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 80 (dowry death) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
Police are scanning Mamta's phone and will also be recording statements of her parents to understand the plight she was going through, an officer said.

Sivaganga custodial death: Victim Ajith Kumar's brother Naveen alleges he too was beaten; hospitalised for examination

File photo NEW DELHI: Naveen Kumar , the younger brother of Ajith Kumar—who died in alleged police custody in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district—was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for medical examination on Sunday. Naveen complained of pain, swelling, and discomfort in his feet, claiming he too was beaten by the police during questioning. Ajith, a 27-year-old security guard at a village temple, was picked up after a woman visitor accused him of stealing ornaments from her car. The postmortem report confirmed multiple external injuries and internal bleeding in Ajith's brain, heart, and stomach. Though it stopped short of stating the cause of death, it did suggest torture. The autopsy was delayed by more than 18 hours raising further questions about the handling of the case. Ajith's mother, B Malathi, who met him hours before his death, said he was shirtless and trembling. 'I asked him to admit it if he had taken the jewellery. He said in a low voice, 'I didn't take them.' That was the last thing he told me.' The Tamil Nadu government has provided the family with Rs 5 lakh compensation, a house site patta, and a government job. Naveen, who has completed his ITI, has been appointed as a technician at AAVIN, the state milk cooperative. Following massive outrage by opoposition, Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a CBI probe. Actor-politician Vijay also met the grieving family, expressing support. Five policemen have been arrested in the case.

Multiple smuggling attempts were thwarted and four persons were arrested at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport on Saturday by Mumbai Customs officials, who also seized items worth over Rs 11 crore that included nearly 10 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana, exotic wildlife species and gold. According to Customs officials, they acted on specific intelligence and intercepted an Indian national who arrived from Bangkok. A thorough examination of the passenger's checked-in baggage revealed 9.662 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana, a high-grade variant of cannabis, with an estimated value of Rs 9.662 crore in the illicit market. The passenger was arrested under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. In another incident, a passenger from Bangkok was arrested for carrying several exotic and non-native species — both alive and deceased — concealed in his bag. The recovery included raccoons (Procyon Lotor) one alive, 3 dead; black fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) 3 dead, and green iguanas 29 alive, 8 dead. The live animals were handed over to airline staff for deportation to their country of origin. Legal proceedings were initiated against the arrested passenger under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and the Customs Act, 1962. In other two separate cases, two passengers from Dubai were found smuggling 24 KT gold in dust form hidden in wax and as small gold pieces weighing a total of 1.650 kg and valued at Rs 1.49 crore. The gold was hidden in their body cavities and inner pockets. Both were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.
