NEW DELHI:
Naveen Kumar
, the younger brother of Ajith Kumar—who died in alleged police custody in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district—was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for medical examination on Sunday.
Naveen complained of pain, swelling, and discomfort in his feet, claiming he too was beaten by the police during questioning.
Ajith, a 27-year-old security guard at a village temple, was picked up after a woman visitor accused him of stealing ornaments from her car.
The postmortem report confirmed multiple external injuries and internal bleeding in Ajith's brain, heart, and stomach. Though it stopped short of stating the cause of death, it did suggest torture.
The autopsy was delayed by more than 18 hours raising further questions about the handling of the case.
Ajith's mother, B Malathi, who met him hours before his death, said he was shirtless and trembling. 'I asked him to admit it if he had taken the jewellery. He said in a low voice, 'I didn't take them.' That was the last thing he told me.'
The Tamil Nadu government has provided the family with Rs 5 lakh compensation, a house site patta, and a government job. Naveen, who has completed his ITI, has been appointed as a technician at AAVIN, the state milk cooperative.
Following massive outrage by opoposition, Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a CBI probe. Actor-politician Vijay also met the grieving family, expressing support. Five policemen have been arrested in the case.

Sebi has all powers to act against manipulative trading: Pandey

New Delhi: Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) Chairman, TuhinKanta Pandey, said on Monday that the market regulator has all the powers to act against manipulative trading activities in the matter related to New York-headquartered trading major Jane Street Group, which is very evident from the interim order that has been issued to ban it from the Indian stock market. Asked whether there is a need to have more regulations to act against such entities, the Sebi Chairman quipped that the need was for enforcement and surveillance rather than more regulations, and the 'order in the Jane Street case speaks for itself.' 'Within the regulations only, we have bought it. So, with regulations remaining the same, it is enforcement and surveillance that can actually help. Excess regulations do not mean excess regulation. Those are two different things,' Pandey remarked. He highlighted that a great deal of analytical work went into the Jane Street case, as manipulative activities were done in many ways 'Manipulative practices can be worked out by different players in different ways. There is no one particular way in which you have to assess. Our regulations very clearly mention that manipulative and fraudulent practices are not allowed in the market and within the regulations, Sebihas all the powers to investigate and act,' Pandey explained. 'Obviously, surveillance both at the exchange level and the Sebi level will continue, and we will also upgrade those surveillance measures,' said Pandey. Jane Street has been barred by the Sebi from the Indian stock market for indulging in manipulative trading practices that allegedly enabled the company to make unlawful profits. It indulged in aggressive trading in the derivatives (futures) segment, where the firm executed trades to influence market prices by unfair means to make a fast buck. The Sebidescribed it as 'non-neutral trading behaviour', a strategic attempt to influence prices rather than simply engage with the market. And the tactic wasn't random; it followed a well-known play in the trading world, which is termed 'marking the close.' Jane Street is a proprietary trading firm, which means it trades with its own capital rather than managing client funds. The firm allegedly made a staggering Rs 32,681 crore in profits by manipulating the stock market and repatriating the amount overseas.

Couple accused of Rs 10 cr chit fund fraud abscond

Bengaluru: A couple accused of defrauding over Rs 10 crore through a chit fund scheme have been missing for over a month, prompting victims to appeal directly to Dy CM D.K. Shivakumar and Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara for justice. The accused—Sudha and her husband Siddhachari—allegedly ran a chit fund business from their residence in Jaraganahalli, JP Nagar 6th Phase, for over 20 years. More than 300 people are believed to have invested sums ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh with the couple, trusting them due to their long-standing presence in the community. However, over the past year, the couple reportedly began defaulting on payments, causing concern among depositors. On June 3, Sudha and Siddhachari allegedly fled with their two children, leaving investors in shock and financial distress. Victims subsequently filed a complaint at the Puttenahalli police station. According to preliminary investigations, the couple may have duped investors out of over Rs 10 crore. With no arrests or leads for more than four weeks, the victims have expressed frustration and urged senior ministers to intervene and expedite the search for the absconding duo. In a significant development, DCP (South) Lokesh B. Jagalsar has written to Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda recommending that the case be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further probe.
