Emmy experts predict Drama Series race: ‘Severance' out front, but watch out for ‘The Pitt'
"We have to talk about Severance — that's Apple's main play," says Jones. The sci-fi series has been the category's de facto leader all season long. HBO and Max have an incredible amount of product this year, he says, including The Pitt, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, Industry, and House of the Dragon. He also declares Hulu's apocalyptic series Paradise to be "one of the big newcomers" of the year, with "an amazing performance from Sterling K. Brown."

Feinberg agrees that The Pitt is "the most obvious" freshman drama to receive a nomination, adding, "I think it could even end up winning." Looking beyond the frontrunners, he's "impressed" by how many voters are telling him they're watching Your Friends & Neighbors on Apple TV+. But what about Landman? "That's a real wild card to me because, out in the real world, everybody's watching it, but it's TBD who's watching it in the TV Academy."

"There are a lot of good possibilities in the drama series category," says Hammond. The Handmaid's Tale ended its final season amid "everything going on in the world, and seemingly this show has turned into a documentary, ... Handmaid's Tale is now true life!" As for The Pitt, he thinks it's "so hard to watch" because of all the realistic medical stories, and wishes there were commercials. "I need a break [from all the blood]."
Davis is already looking ahead to the Emmy ceremony, claiming, "Win-wise, I think this is Severance vs. The Pitt for the rest of the year. I think The Pitt is so Homeland Season 1 coded. I want to know how many nominations it gets before I can really cross over and say it can do it." He also creates a stir when he mentions how Pedro Pascal should drop down to supporting for The Last of Us because it's "more appropriate" after what happens to his character in Season 2.
As for shows that people are actually watching "in the real world," Birnbaum singles out Matlock, with its star Kathy Bates on the cusp of being the oldest winner ever for Best Drama Actress. "It's just such a strong narrative," she says. "You have to imagine voters are going to get swept up with that."

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Box Office Taking Steep Dive In 2nd Weekend
Disney Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps is projected to drop as much as 66% in business from its opening frame in its second weekend at the domestic box office. Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel's First Family of Superheroes, The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened with a solid $117.6 million from 4,125 North American theaters from July 25-28. This weekend, the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is hitting some turbulence. According to Deadline, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is projected to make $40 million to $45 million in its second Friday to Sunday frame, which, on the bottom end of that forecast, is a 66% drop in business from its opening weekend. Per the trade publication, a 66% second weekend drop is on par with Captain America: Brave New World's second weekend drop of 68% in February. The second weekend drop for Disney Marvel's other 2025 release — Thunderbolts* — was 56%. The Fantastic Four: First Steps theater count for this weekend remains at 4,125 venues. The forecast of a $40 million to $45 million take for The Fantastic Four: First Steps in its second weekend is below industry projections heading into the weekend. Variety projected the film to earn $45 million to $52 million this weekend, while Box Office Pro's forecast was a bit more optimistic with a $45 million to $55 million second frame projection. Depending on where the domestic weekend tally ends up, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be $2 million shy of the $200 million mark or exceeding the benchmark by $3 million by Sunday, Deadline reported. 'The Bad Guys' Holding Up 'The Naked Gun' For No. 2 Spot DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys 2, which is being distributed by Universal Pictures, is projected by Deadline to make $22 million from 3,852 North American theaters in its opening weekend, which matches the low end of Box Office's Pro's forecast of a $22 to $28 million opening. Variety pegged a much lower opening for the animated family comedy with a forecast of a $15 million to $17 million opening. The Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson reboot of The Naked Gun is projected by Deadline to earn $16 million from 3,344 North American theaters, which falls in line with Variety's pre-release projection of a $15 million to $17 million opening take. Box Office Pro, meanwhile, projected a much loftier debut for The Naked Gun with a pre-release forecast of $22 million to $28 million. Coming in at No. 4 is director James Gunn's Superman, starring David Corenswet as DC Studios' new Man of Steel. Deadline is projecting that the film will earn $13 million in its fourth weekend frame from 3,537 North American theaters. If the projection holds, it will boost Superman's domestic tally to $315.8 million through Sunday. The film cleared the $300 million domestic benchmark on Thursday. Scarlett Johansson's Jurassic World Rebirth is projected by Deadline to earn $8.1 million from 3,240 venues this weekend. If the forecast holds, it will up the dino adventure's domestic take to $317 million. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend with the most current numbers as they become available. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will be released on Monday.

Paula Deen abruptly closes restaurant that launched her to celebrity chef status
In the late 1990s, Paula Deen was an independent restaurateur whose family-operated restaurant had just received a glowing review from USA Today. Her life and career were permanently changed. Now, over 25 years later, the Georgia native has announced the closing of the Lady and Sons — the iconic restaurant that made her a star of Southern cuisine and a household name in the cooking world. Opened in downtown Savannah, Ga., in 1996, the Lady and Sons boasted a menu of local classics like fried green tomatoes, banana pudding and hoecakes. The signature dish, Southern fried chicken, was enough to draw lines wrapping around the block — and the restaurant came to be viewed as an embodiment of the indulgent and buttery flavors that characterize Southern cooking. 'There in Savannah, Paula Deen's homestyle Southern menu at the Lady and Sons turned me into a ravenous beast, unmindful of manners, cholesterol, North-South diplomacy and the dropped jaws of my companions,' USA Today, then the nation's most-read daily newspaper, wrote on Dec. 17, 1999. Earlier that year, the popularity of the Lady and Sons caught the attention of Food Network journalist Gordon Elliott. Deen appeared on Elliott's short-lived show 'Door Knock Dinners' that led to her own Daytime Emmy-winning Food Network program, 'Paula's Home Cooking.' On her website and social media accounts, Deen bid farewell to the Lady and Sons and its longtime fans. Also closing is her newer restaurant, the Chicken Box, which opened in 2023. 'Hey, y'all, my sons and I made the heartfelt decision that Thursday, July 31st, was the last day of service for The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box,' Deen said in the statement. 'We will now focus our attention on the four Paula Deen's Family Kitchen locations across the country.' The announcement came without warning, especially as the restaurant continued to draw tours and lines of customers. Three weeks prior to the announcement, the Lady and Sons posted on Instagram that it was hiring for all positions. Over the years, some of Deen's other restaurants have also closed suddenly. In 2014, employees at Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House — a Savannah eatery she co-owned with her brother, Earl W. 'Bubba' Hiers Jr. — reportedly arrived to work to find the doors locked and the appliances removed. A sign on the door said, 'Thank you for 10 great years. Uncle Bubba's is now closed.' The Panama City, Fla., location of Paula Deen's Family Kitchen also closed abruptly in 2019, laying off 30 employees without advance notice. Several former employees told local news channel WJHG that they were left without their main source of income following the closure. Uncle Bubba's closure came a year after controversy began to surround Deen after a former manager at the restaurant sued Hiers, alleging sexual and racial discrimination. Food Network canceled 'Paula's Home Cooking' after Deen admitted to using a racial slur during a deposition for the 2013 lawsuit. Lawyers asked Deen if she had ever used the N-word, to which Deen replied, 'Yes, of course,' later adding, 'It's been a very long time.' Since then, the 78-year-old has focused on her restaurants. The Lady and Sons, as her core establishment, was the result of a litany of personal struggles and ambition. Both of her parents passed away when she was in her early 20s and Deen, then a young mother, struggled with depression and agoraphobia, or fear of going outside. With only $200 left, Deen founded a catering company out of her kitchen called the Bag Lady. Her handmade bag lunches were delivered by her sons Jamie and Bobby and earned Deen a local reputation for her homestyle cooking. After one attempt at a restaurant, the Lady in 1991, the follow-up, the Lady and Sons, co-owned with Jamie and Bobby, would be her success.
