Silchar: In a landmark decision ending nearly 70 years of aviation service, Air India will suspend flight operations to and from Silchar Airport starting June 1. The Tata Group-run airline's last scheduled flight on the Silchar-Kolkata route will depart on May 31.
The suspension — confirmed by senior Air India officials — comes without an official explaination from the airline. Sources reveal that an internal communication has already been circulated, offering voluntary retirement to the airline's permanent station manager in Silchar. However, uncertainty looms over several contractual employees, with no clear reassignment plans. Since its first service in 1955, Air India (formerly Indian Airlines) has played a crucial role in connecting Silchar to the rest of India. The Silchar-Kolkata route, especially the daily flight, has long been a lifeline for the region, consistently averaging 120 passengers per trip. The withdrawal is expected to have far-reaching consequences on regional connectivity. With limited and often unreliable surface transport — especially during monsoons — air travel remains crucial. Air India's departure leaves only IndiGo and Alliance Air operating flights from Silchar, raising fears of capacity constraints and fare surges. "Ticket prices will likely rise as demand outstrips supply, especially during peak travel periods and emergencies," cautioned a travel industry sources. The decision has triggered concern among frequent flyers, local residents, and stakeholders, who urge civil aviation authorities to intervene and ensure continued, affordable air connectivity for Silchar and the broader Barak Valley region.

Norway Pension Fund Blacklists Firms Supplying Israeli Military

Norway's largest private pension fund has excluded two defense companies from its portfolio, citing their ties to the Israeli military and the war in Gaza. KLP Pension, which oversees about $114 billion, said in a statement on Monday that it won't invest in Oshkosh Corp. or ThyssenKrupp AG because they sell weapons to the Israeli military. The fund said the decision followed a report from United Nations last June that identified companies supplying the Israel Defense Forces with weapons that ended up being deployed in Gaza. After talks with the companies, KLP said it concluded they were 'contravening' the fund's investment guidelines. 'We have therefore decided to exclude them from our investment universe,' Kiran Aziz, head of responsible investments at KLP Kapitalforvaltning, said in the statement. Before June 16, KLP held shares worth about 19 million kroner in Oshkosh and roughly 10 million kroner in ThyssenKrupp. Spokespeople for Oshkosh and ThyssenKrupp didn't respond to a request for comment sent outside regular office hours. Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and sparking a war in Gaza that has dragged on for almost 20 months. More than 55,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, while large parts of the territory have been reduced to rubble. KLP's decision feeds into a broader campaign by human rights activists urging financial firms and consumers to either divest from or boycott companies linked to Israel. In Norway, that campaign has singled out Norges Bank Investment Management, the country's $1.9 trillion sovereign wealth fund, which has holdings in hundreds of Israeli companies. The wealth fund, the world's largest, has previously excluded companies due to their links to Israel's occupation of the West Bank. KLP cited guidance from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and a group of UN experts, which have said that companies selling weapons, parts, components or ammunition to Israeli forces risk becoming complicit in serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government has denied the charges, saying its conduct in the conflict has been in line with international law. KLP said its investment guidelines prevent it from owning stakes in companies that are involved in the 'sale of weapons to states in armed conflicts that use the weapons in ways that represent serious and systematic breaches of international law governing the conflicts.' Companies are expected to 'exercise due diligence in order to avoid complicity in violations of fundamental human rights and humanitarian law,' Aziz said. KLP excluded Caterpillar Inc. last year on similar grounds. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

IndiGo Parent InterGlobe Aviation Rises 2% As Emkay Calls It Core Portfolio Pick

Emkay Global has highlighted strong re-rating potential for InterGlobe Aviation calling it a "core holding" for any India-focused portfolio Indigo Share Price: Emkay Global has highlighted strong re-rating potential for InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, calling it a 'core holding" for any India-focused portfolio. The brokerage expects the stock to benefit from a robust 20 percent earnings CAGR, adding that any rerating will be the 'icing on the cake." Shares of InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) were trading at approximately Rs 5,816, marking a 2.19 per cent rise in intraday trade on Monday. IndiGo continues to dominate the Indian aviation sector with a long growth runway ahead, Emkay noted, asserting that the airline's competitive position is likely to remain intact for the next 3–5 years. 'IndiGo has emerged as a player with strong profitability, and its cash flows have largely kept pace with earnings," it added. According to the brokerage, three key catalysts are likely to drive IndiGo's medium-term performance: New Airport Capacity: The Navi Mumbai and Jewar airports, expected to be fully operational by CY26, could significantly boost passenger volumes. IndiGo's leading market share and ability to rapidly scale aircraft deployment put it in a position to capture 60–70% of the incremental domestic traffic. Discretionary Spending Revival: Emkay anticipates a pickup in discretionary spending in H2FY26, which could lead to improved aircraft utilization and present an upside to current consensus estimates. Soft Crude Prices: Lower crude prices through FY26, not fully reflected in the current share price, provide an additional tailwind. While the recent rally in the stock factors in the Iran-Israel ceasefire, it does not yet reflect the subsequent decline in oil prices. Broader macro trends are also working in IndiGo's favour. As India's per-capita income is projected to rise from $2,711 in 2024 to about $4,000 by 2030, air travel demand is expected to surge. This demand will be supported by government plans to add 50 new airports over the next five years. Emkay further pointed to the airline's international growth prospects. With 60 wide-body aircraft on order and more than 30 to be added over the next five years, IndiGo is well-positioned to expand globally. As India negotiates more bilateral air travel agreements and expands international airport capacity, the brokerage expects IndiGo to capture a large portion of the incremental market. ANI 30 Jun 2025, 00:56 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): An IndiGo flight from Pune to Hyderabad was diverted to Vijayawada on Sunday due to heavy air traffic in Hyderabad airspace, according to sources. Sources said that the flight (6E-6473) had departed from Pune Airport at 8:43 AM on Sunday and was en route to Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. It later landed at Hyderabad airport at 12:38 PM, they added. Earlier, Air India flight AI357, operating from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Delhi, was diverted to make an unscheduled landing in Kolkata on Sunday as a precautionary measure following elevated cabin temperatures during the journey. According to an official statement from the airline, the flight landed safely and is currently being inspected. 'Air India flight AI357, operating from Haneda to Delhi on 29 June 2025, made a precautionary diversion to Kolkata due to persistent warm temperatures experienced in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely in Kolkata and is currently undergoing checks,' said the Air India spokesperson. The airline further said, 'Our ground colleagues in Kolkata are providing all necessary support to passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen diversion. Alternative arrangements are being made to fly our passengers to Delhi at the earliest. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers.' (ANI)
