Kolkata: Howrah resident Saurish Naskar (27) was arrested on Tuesday for duping a New Town resident, Uttam Kumar Singh, of Rs 11 lakh. Naskar had contacted Singh on social media and convinced him to invest through a Demat account, promising high returns.

Singh was added to two WhatsApp groups—VIP 71 Genius Innovation Capital Group and DS Genius Innovation Capital —and tricked into transferring Rs 11 lakh. On realising, he had lost the money, Singh filed a complaint on National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal on March 7 and a FIR at Bidhannagar Cyber PS on April 22. tnn

SHO denied anticipatory bail by Hisar court after affair with accused
Gurgaon: In a case that saw professional codes breached and lines between sleuth and suspect blur, an SHO who had an affair with the man she was tasked with investigating now faces arrest. The 50-year-old inspector was rapped for conduct "unbecoming of a police officer" as a sessions court in Hisar denied her anticipatory bail in an FIR filed against her at Azad Nagar police station on June 9 under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, IT Act and relevant sections of BNS. The court, however, also rapped police for adding irrelevant charges to the FIR. The complaint in the case is the wife of Aman Siwach, the man the SHO was investigating in a property encroachment case. Siwach's wife alleged the cop "deliberately" kept her husband under the influence of alcohol and forced him to spend Rs 1 lakh a month on her. She also claimed the SHO threatened to frame Aman in a rape case. The FIR was registered against the SHO after Siwach's wife furnished WhatsApp chats and audio recordings as evidence. The cop moved court, seeking protection from arrest. But additional sessions judge Manglesh Kumar Choubey, while denying bail, observed that while intimate relationships between consenting adults are protected under Article 21 of the Constitution, they become "immoral" when the parties are already married (the SHO is married, too). The court was also critical of an investigating officer getting into a relationship with an accused, describing it as "moral turpitude". The court insisted on the need for the SHO's custodial interrogation to investigate the money trail and prevent interference with witnesses. "This was not a one-time affair, it continued. This relationship was not confined to personal intimacy but encompassed within its ambit every possible attempt of interference in the working of the police force. Such acts and conduct are not expected from any public servant, but it was unbecoming of a police officer heading a police station. Her custodial interrogation is absolutely essential for proper investigation, to confront her with all the transactions on the records, to investigate the money trail, and to stop her from interfering with the investigation and influencing the complainant and witnesses," the judge ruled. The court also reprimanded police for adding several unwarranted sections to the FIR against the cop, stating that such actions did not merit "any medal or appreciation". "Let all investigating officers know that the addition of unwanted and irrelevant offences in any FIR does not make them eligible for any medal or appreciation," the court said.

No pre-arrest bail for ex-CEO in city co-op bank scam
Mumbai: A sessions court refused to grant interim relief from arrest to former CEO of the New India Co-operative Bank Ltd, Abhimanyu Bhoan, in the bank scam case. The city's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against Percept Ltd founder-director Harinder Pal Singh, New India Co-operative Bank former chairman Hiren Bhanu and his wife Gauri, bank's former CEO Abhimayu Bhoan, Ranjit Bhanu (deceased) and five others for allegedly causing a loss of around Rs 25 crore to the bank between 2014 and 2023. This is the second FIR registered against the Bhanus and Bhoan. In Feb, a case was filed against the Bhanus, Bhoan and seven others after RBI officials found Rs 122 crore cash missing from the cooperative bank. According to the fresh FIR, Bhanu and a few bank officials had sanctioned a loan of Rs 77 crore to Percept Group, a media and entertainment firm. Police claimed that Bhanu, who was then also the director of Hermis group of companies, received nearly Rs 6.4 crore from Percept as kickbacks, which was shown as business dealings with the Percept Group using fake invoices. On June 12, 230 passengers boarded Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad. Thirty seconds after takeoff, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plunged into a medical college hostel. It wasn't just a crash—it was a massacre, and one that could have been prevented. And like so many others in India's increasingly dystopian aviation landscape, it exposed not just the condition of the aircraft but the rot at the very heart of our aviation ecosystem. In any functioning democracy, such a tragedy would be a moment of reckoning. But not in India. Instead, distraught relatives ran from morgue to morgue, clutching photographs of burnt bodies and unanswered questions. For days, there were no officials with answers. There was no crisis response team. Hardly a responsive centralised helpline, which should have been mandatory. The main crisis that allows airlines to get away with murder is that there is no regulator fixing accountability. Sympathy without empathy is a sign of apathy. Add indifference at the helm, and the picture is complete: four senior executives threw an official party days after the crash. Thankfully, they were sacked. And the conscience cancelled perceived callousness, with the Tatas setting up a foundation with a huge Rs 500-crore corpus to look after the interests of the victims.
