RBI likely to hold short-term lending rate, say experts

Mumbai, Aug 3 (PTI) The Reserve Bank is likely to hold the key short-term lending rate at 5.5 per cent in its upcoming bi-monthly monetary policy on Wednesday after three back-to-back reductions, notwithstanding the headwinds to near-term economic growth in the wake of elevated US tariff uncertainties and subdued inflation trends, according to experts.
However, some experts opined that the central bank may go for another round of rate cuts as challenges to the growth outlook outweigh potential inflation risks.
The central bank has already effected three back-to-back reductions in the short-term lending rate (repo), cumulating to 100 basis points (bps).
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra headed a six-member rate-setting panel — the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) — is scheduled to announce the next bi-monthly policy rate on Wednesday (August 6). The three-day meeting of the MPC will start on Monday.
Bank of Baroda Chief Economist Madan Sabnavis said the credit policy will not be based on the most recent developments of low inflation for June and the 25 per cent US tariff.
In June, he said, the policy already would have buffered in the 26 per cent tariff, which was the deferred rate in April.
'Therefore, the tariff per se may not really change the view on growth, though it would be interesting to see how the RBI looks at this number. There can be a slight downward revision in inflation projection for the year by 0.1-0.2 per cent, i.e. 3.5-3.6 per cent instead of 3.7 per cent," Sabnavis said.
However, in the current context, the cost of oil for the economy will also be a consideration.
'Therefore, we do not expect any change of stance or policy rate this time. The tone will be more cautious with some comfort being drawn on the resilient growth front," he pointed out.
CareEdge Ratings said the RBI had already frontloaded the rate cuts, anticipating the moderation in inflation.
'Hence, we do not expect further rate cuts unless growth concerns aggravate. While the US reciprocal tariff rate and proposed penalty are concerning, the RBI may opt to wait till we get further clarity on this front. With a forward-looking outlook, the RBI would be focusing on inflation in the quarters ahead," it said.
CareEdge Ratings further said that given the incomplete transmission of the previous rate cuts, the RBI is expected to hold off on further easing, allowing time for the full impact of earlier measures to materialise.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation has remained below 4 per cent since February. It was at 2.1 per cent in June.
The government has mandated the RBI to ensure inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.
Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, Icra, opined that with the recent CPI prints signalling a lower trajectory for the second half of this calendar year, the average for FY2026 is likely to be pared from the MPC's June 2025 guidance of 3.7 per cent.
'Further, the tariffs imposed by the US will pose a downside risk to GDP growth, while admittedly injecting volatility into the INR. In our view, the balance remains slightly tilted towards a final rate cut of 25 bps in the August 2025 policy review," Nayar said.
Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, Crisil Limited, said, 'We anticipate a 25 basis point reduction in the repo rate, as inflation has been lower than anticipated and, overall, the risks to growth currently surpass those related to inflation".
The MPC consists of three RBI officials – Sanjay Malhotra (Governor), Poonam Gupta (Deputy Governor), Rajiv Ranjan (Executive Director) and three external members – Nagesh Kumar (Director and Chief Executive, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, New Delhi), Saugata Bhattacharya (Economist), Ram Singh (Director, Delhi School of Economics). Markets fall after Trump's additional tariff threat on Russian crude oil

Indian equity benchmarks declined on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump renewed his threat to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil purchases from Russia. General caution ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) monetary policy decision on Wednesday also weighed on sentiment. The Sensex ended the session at 80,710, down 309 points or 0.4 per cent. The Nifty closed at 24,650, a decline of 73 points or 0.3 per cent. The total market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms fell by ₹83,000 crore to end at ₹448 trillion. Trump on Monday said he would substantially raise tariffs on India to penalise it for importing Russian oil, although he did not specify by how much. His latest announcement follows a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports announced last week — among the steepest for a major economy. In a social media post, the US President said India was not only buying large quantities of Russian oil but also selling it on the open market for significant profits, disregarding the humanitarian toll of the war in Ukraine. He had earlier given an August 8 deadline for Russia to reach a truce and threatened secondary sanctions on countries continuing to purchase Russian energy. Ukraine's allies argue such purchases support the Russian economy and ease pressure on the government to end its military campaign, now entering its fourth year. India's external affairs ministry responded by stating that the country began purchasing Russian oil only after traditional suppliers diverted shipments to Europe following the onset of the war. The ministry said the US had, at the time, encouraged such imports. It called the targeting 'unjustified and unreasonable' and asserted that India would take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests and economic security. Relations between the two countries have been strained by the tariff imposition following months of negotiations. India has also taken exception to Trump's claim that he helped resolve its conflict with Pakistan earlier this year. Looking ahead, trade negotiations with the US and the outcome of the RBI policy meeting will influence the near-term market trajectory. 'Investors are now awaiting the upcoming RBI policy decision, where the market has marginal expectations of a rate cut in the near term. Currently, the preferences of investors are for domestic consumption-driven stocks and sectors holding limited volatility to external factors,' said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services. Market breadth was weak, with 2,371 stocks declining and 1,672 advancing. ICICI Bank, down 1.3 per cent, was the biggest contributor to the Sensex's fall, followed by Reliance Industries, which slipped 1.4 per cent. 'The near-term downtrend of Nifty remains intact, and the market is expected to slide towards the 24,500–24,400 levels in the next few sessions. However, tomorrow's RBI mid-quarter policy outcome is expected to provide clear direction. Immediate resistance is placed at the 24,800 level,' said Nagaraj Shetti, senior technical research analyst at HDFC Securities.

MGNREGS person-days between May to Aug down compared to last year

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The number of person-days of employment generated under the MGNREGS between May to August this year has come down to 112.29 crore person-days, around 30 person-days less than the year before, the government informed the Lok Sabha. In the same period in 2023-24, 142.87 person-days were generated under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan said on Tuesday. Person-days refers to the total number of days of work generated for individuals under MGNREGS. It is calculated by multiplying the number of people working on a given day by the number of days they worked. The MoS said MGNREGS is a demand driven wage employment scheme, which provides livelihood security for rural households, when no better employment opportunity is available. He also said the difference between work availed with the work demanded is on due to lack of utilisation of such work by workers, owing to availability of better employment opportunities elsewhere, illness or any other factor. In the financial year 2021-22, 99.55 per cent of the eligible rural households were offered employment against demand, he said. 'Similarly, during the current FY 2025-26 (as on 31.07.2025), 99.79 per cent of the eligible rural households have been offered employment against demand," the minister said. He added that during the current financial year, 95.95 per cent attendance has been marked through National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) under the Scheme.
