He's Bringing Rossini to Philadelphia and ‘West Side Story' to Rome

New York Times19 hours ago
It was the morning of the dress rehearsal for Leonard Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' at the Baths of Caracalla, the ancient ruins that are the traditional summertime venue for the Rome Opera, and the show's director, Damiano Michieletto, was concerned.
'Some of the Jets have problems with precise pronunciation,' he said.
After deciding to do the musical in English rather than in translation, he did not have the funds to hire a full American cast for the Jets, a gang rumbling to take the streets of New York. You could tell, he fretted. (The diction was less of a problem with the Sharks, the rival Puerto Rican gang, he said, 'because Italian, you know, that works.')
That might have been his least concern. This year, Michieletto was given free rein to come up with the program for the Rome Opera's summer Caracalla Festival, which runs until Aug. 7, keeping in mind that 2025 is a Jubilee year for the Catholic Church expected to draw millions of pilgrims with varying musical tastes to Rome. In a break from past programming, he decided that the first major new production would be 'West Side Story.' A musical — gasp — was headlining one of Italy's most highbrow cultural stages and was an unusual choice in a country where musicals are considered a minor genre and often dismissed.
That did not faze Michieletto, who over the past 20 years has built a reputation as a visionary, nonconformist, at times over-the-top, director whose work is in demand across Europe. In September, he will make his debut at a major American opera house with Rossini's 'Il Viaggio a Reims' at Opera Philadelphia. There he will be presenting a revival of a much-lauded version first staged in Amsterdam in 2015 and reprised several times since.
For his new work at the Caracalla Festival — which this year is titled 'Between the Sacred and the Human' because it casts a wide musical net, from a staged production of Handel's oratorio 'The Resurrection' to 'West Side Story' — he opted to focus on the electric energy of a work that was directed and based on an idea by Jerome Robbins, one of the great choreographers of his generation.

Sofia Vergara Appears With New Man & It's Not Tom Brady, Hints ‘Source'

's dating rumors have taken a turn as a new report suggests she is with a new man, and it is not Tom Brady. The two have remained in the headlines in recent days after their photo from a yacht party went viral. Although Vergara and Brady were linked, reports were quick to shut down the speculations and stated that nothing romantic was going on between them. According to the latest claims, the television bombshell happens to be mingling with another man. As recent reports continue to shut down Sofia Vergara's dating rumors with Tom Brady, it appears that she is now with a new man. The television personality recently rang in her 53rd birthday in style, and one attendee at the bash has reportedly stood out. A party guest exclusively hinted to Rob Shuter's #ShuterScoop that sparks are flying between Vergara and businessman Douglas Chabbott. They claimed that the actor 'looked smitten.' The party guest continued, 'Douglas was at the center of it all.' They also stated that it 'wasn't casual,' and added, 'He's the guy.' Meanwhile, Vergara shared a series of posts on her Instagram from her birthday bash in Sardinia. One photo showed her sitting with her close ones, including Chabbott, at the dinner table. In addition to this, Vergara appears to be living her best life with her rumored new beau. Earlier this month, the 'America's Got Talent' judge partied hard at a Calvin Harris concert with Chabbott in Ibiza. Vergara took to her Instagram and shared a video of the two enjoying the music while grooving among concertgoers. Another fun clip from the night showed the rumored couple arm in arm as they danced together. Previously, when Sofia Vergara's photo with Tom Brady sparked rumors, some reports even alleged that the latter commented on the reality television star's age. However, the 47-year-old former NFL player's rep claimed that he 'would never' call her 'too old' for him. Final tickets on sale for hit musical Les Misérables in Carlisle

The final tickets are sale to see Talented youngsters from across Cumbria perform one of the most beloved musicals in Carlisle. Les Misérables is currently playing to packed houses in London's West End as well on a world tour, but Cumbrian audiences can enjoy the show on their own doorstep when StagedRight Youth Theatre ends their 20th anniversary year with a spectacular production of the show. With The Sands Centre reopening being in doubt, the award-winning group took the decision many months ago to stage the show for a second year at the Garden at Eden Marquee within Eden Golf Club. Director David McNeill said: 'This time last year we couldn't be certain that The Sands Centre would be open again by July and thank goodness we made the decision to book the Garden at Eden. 'Whilst we very much look forward to getting back to The Sands, our audiences and students have embraced the marquee and this year we are building raked seating and literally turning the venue into a 400-seat theatre complete with dressing rooms and full lighting and sound. 'We have even had to build our own stage set to fit the venue and the idea is that audiences feel as if they have stepped into a French Street with Bisto café, wine bar and snacks'. StagedRight has twice previously presented Les Misérables but with the show celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, it was felt to be the 'perfect musical' for audiences and to showcase the talents within StagedRight. The production features a cast of almost 90 young people with a live 16-piece professional orchestra to accompany the actors as they sing the world-famous score including One Day More, On My Own and I Dreamed a Dream. David continued 'If you loved the film or have never seen the show before, this is an experience you will never forget. 'Les Misérables has a real heart and touches everyone who sees it'. Last year's production of Barnum won the highest accolade in amateur theatre being awarded Best Musical Production in the UK by the President of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association. Amanda Knox Claps Back on Leaked Diary About Sex With 7 Past Partners

Originally appeared on E! Online Amanda Knox isn't ashamed of her past romances. The 38-year-old had a thought-provoking response to recent criticism over a past diary entry in which she admitted to having sex with seven partners by the age of 20—a private confession that was leaked to the public by Italian police after she and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were first accused of her roommate Meredith Kercher's murder in 2007. In the old journal entry shared to X July 15, Knox—who was in the midst of being interrogated by authorities over Kercher's killing at the time—listed everyone she had been intimate with after being wrongly informed by police that she had contracted HIV. "I don't know where I could have gotten HIV from," she wrote. "Here is the list of people I've had sex with in general." Now, looking back at her diary, Knox wrote on X July 15, "After years of being vilified as a deviant sex monster, I couldn't help but internalize some of that shame, despite the fact that I knew there was nothing wrong with my sexuality (which was actually quite vanilla)." And Knox was quick to clap back at the jab, reminding her troll why she wrote the diary entry in the first place. Yes, I slept with 7 people by age 20. (3 were serious boyfriends; 1 was Raffaele.) This was made public after police lied to me that I had HIV, then told me to write a list of my partners, then confiscated my diary and leaked it to the media. "I don't want to die," I wrote. Amanda Knox (@amandaknox) July 15, 2025 "Yes, I slept with 7 people by age 20. (3 were serious boyfriends; 1 was Raffaele.)," she replied in a second message on X July 15. "This was made public after police lied to me that I had HIV, then told me to write a list of my partners, then confiscated my diary and leaked it to the media. 'I don't want to die,' I wrote." Knox and Sollecito were convicted of Kercher's murder in 2009, before being acquitted and retried in a 2011 proceeding that she was also convicted in. The pair maintained their innocence throughout their incarceration, and were exonerated of all charges by Italy's highest court in 2015 after deeming the evidence contradictory and the investigation flawed from the start. In 2019, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Knox's original interrogation by police violated her human rights and ordered the Italian legal system should pay her $20,000. While testifying in front of the European Court of Human Rights, Knox—whose complicated case has since been documented in the 2016 Netflix movie Amanda Knox—provided further insight into why the police interrogation was her "worst nightmare" while being questioned in a language she "barely knew." "When I couldn't remember the details, one of the officers gave me a little smack on the head and shouted, 'remember, remember,'" Knox—who is a mother to two children with husband Christopher Robinson—said in court in 2019, per NBC News. "And then I put together a jumble of memories and the police made me sign a statement. I was forced to submit. It had been a violation of my rights."
