England's Alex Greenwood is the talk of the town ahead of Euros final
Greenwood attended St Monica's RC Primary School on Aintree Road and later Savio Salesian College, which is now called The Salesian Academy of St John Bosco, on Netherton Way. Greenwood has played every game in this year's Euros, helping England to progress to the final for the second successive tournament.
The Lionesses, who won the trophy back in 2022, have made it to the final again on Sunday against Spain, the opponents who won the World Cup at England's expense in 2023. Now Greenwood, who will likely start at left-back, and her teammates have the chance to enact revenge.

One man who's expecting a busy weekend is Andy Milligan, the 54 year-old manager of Hyper Bar. Andy, who has lived in Bootle for over four decades, knows Greenwood's family well.
While many of them will be swapping Bootle for Basel to watch the final live, he is still expecting a big turnout. Speaking to the ECHO ahead of the game, Andy said: 'I've known some of the family for many years.
"I've been in touch with Alex's mum. There will be some family members here, but the bulk of them are all going over to the final themselves.
'I had the whole gang year for the very first game, about 30 to 40 of them. They were all made up with the turnout, but then the result wasn't what they wanted (a 2-1 defeat against The Netherlands.) We've been in touch constantly throughout.'
Andy hopes that Greenwood's mural is a symbol of Bootle's regeneration. The town is set for a £2m-a-year financial boost for the next decade by the government, which Andy says is much needed after HMRC, a large employer in the town, closed its offices in 2022.
He said: 'It's quite surprising. It's brought a lot of attention to Stanley Road, not just to the bar. There's a lot of development work going on at the moment.
'There were about 3,500 people working across the road and all of a sudden there was none. It was a massive source of cash for the community. Hopefully moving forward, it's going to change things and it will be back to a bustling community again.
'I think what she's accomplished so far has inspired a lot of people. I think women's football has become much, much bigger. There's a lot of people talking about it. It's become one of the main topics at the moment, along with the Isak transfer to Liverpool. A 5pm kick-off should work well for turnout.'
Despite her success, Andy says Greenwood remains grounded in the real world. He said: 'She's a very down to earth person. She's got a really nice personality. She's very family oriented. That's a big thing for her mum, her sister and the rest of the gang. They are all very close.'
Andy feels that England's route to the final, which involved a victory on penalties in the quarter-final and a late winner in extra-time of the semi-final has set up an enticing contest.
He said: 'They're literally battled to get there which is building the excitement. Spain are a very talented side, a very quick side. It's building up to be what could be a really great final.'

Pears strike late against Hants on rain-affected day
Rothesay County Championship Division One, Visit Worcestershire New Road (day one) Hampshire 146-2: Middleton 79, Weatherley 62 Worcestershire: Yet to bat Hants (0 pts), Worcs (0 pts) Match scorecard Worcestershire struck two late blows after Hampshire's batters had laid a solid foundation on a truncated first day of their County Championship match at Visit Worcestershire New Road. Hampshire, in search of their first championship victory since mid-May, closed on 146 for two having reached 127 without loss before losing openers Fletcha Middleston (79, 101 balls) and Joe Weatherley (62, 130) in a late burst of play in poor light. They were blows badly needed by Worcestershire, bottom of Division One and desperate for a win to sustain their slender hopes of survival. After a wet outfield prevented play before lunch, the home side chose to bowl in conditions still damp from morning rain, but the assistance for the seamers they hoped for did not materialise. Pakistan pace spearhead Khurram Shahzad was expensive as Weatherley and Middleton put 50 on the board by the 14th over. The Winchester-born openers were little troubled by a Worcestershire attack bruised by last week's heartbreaking defeat to neighbours Warwickshire. Having dominated the first half of the match at Edgbaston, the Pears suffered a devastating defeat as Warwickshire chased down 393 on the last day. Back on home turf, the Worcestershire attack, with Matthew Waite returning from paternity leave in place of Sussex loanee Bertie Foreman, again toiled. Middleton hurried to his half-century from 51 balls and Weatherley followed to his from 103. The openers were looking forward to a productive evening session only for the rain to return during the tea interval and prevent play until a late resumption at 6pm. Hampshire's openers ventured back out with little to gain and everything to lose – and the home side took advantage of the murky, moist conditions. Middleton edged Tom Taylor to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick, who took a superb catch in front of first slip, and Weatherly edged Ben Allison to Ethan Brookes at second slip. The wickets were an unwelcome postscript to a hitherto excellent day for Hampshire but they have still set down a solid platform from which to push for a victory that would lift them away from the relegation zone – and pretty much sentence Worcestershire to end the season in it. Watch: Paddleboarding pooches break three world records
Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The 2025 U.K. Dog Surfing Championships in Dorset, England, saw three different Guinness World Records being broken by paddleboarding pooches. Mark Reeves, the organizer of the annual event at Branksome Dene Chine, decided this year's Dog Surfing Championships would include world record attempts for the most dog/human pairs paddleboarding simultaneously, the fastest 50-meter paddleboarding by a human/dog pair and the most dogs on a single paddleboard. The first record was broken by 10 human-canine pairings competing in a 50-meter (164-foot) paddleboard race. The race ended in a tie between two teams: Matthew Jenkins and his 2-year-old shih-tzu, Gigi; and Ben Gray with his "boarder" collie, Boo. The two men and their dogs now co-hold the record for the fastest 50-meter paddleboarding by a human/dog pair. The third record proved to be the most complicated, but organizers were able to wrangle 12 dogs onto a single paddleboard, and they remained in place long enough to successfully earn the title.
