Everton captain Coleman signs one-year contact extension
Everton captain Seamus Coleman has signed a one-year contract extension, saying on Friday that the chance to lead the club into their new stadium was a key reason to continue. The 36-year-old Republic of Ireland international signed the deal just three days before his previous contract expired. He was forced off in the first half of Everton's final game at Goodison Park last month with a thigh injury but is expected to be fit in time for next season. Coleman joined the Merseyside club from Sligo Rovers in 2009 during David Moyes' first spell as manager. Moyes joined for a second spell in January, guiding Everton to a 13th-place finish. "In David Moyes, we have the perfect manager to lead us into a new era. He showed his abilities once again with the way he had us playing after returning last season. "As the man who brought me to Everton, I can't speak highly enough of him. He gets this football club, the standards required every day, and what it means to play for Everton." Advertisement Coleman holds the club record for most Premier League appearances (369) and is joint 12th on Everton's all-time list with 428 matches in all competitions, just five behind Dixie Dean and Leon Osman. "This could be a period of real change at the Club and I want somebody who can help deliver the messages of what it means to be an Everton footballer. Seamus has always done that and I know he will continue to do so as we move into a new era," Moyes said. Everton begin their league campaign away at Leeds United on August 18th.

Measles outbreak in Knowsley as vaccine rates drop
A borough on Merseyside is dealing with an outbreak of measles amid concerns over falling vaccination rates. Knowsley has recorded 13 probable cases of the virus including 11 children, although that number is expected to rise as some are still awaiting test of measles have become a concern across the country, a problem many believe is associated with falling uptake of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, usually administered in two doses. Dr Sarah McNulty, director of public health at Knowsley Council, said about a third of people between the ages of two and 30 in the borough had not had either dose of the MMR jab. She said about a fifth of children and young people in Knowsley, including 14% of two to five-years-olds, had not had a dose. Merseyside measles outbreak fear over low vaccine uptake Dr McNulty told BBC Radio Merseyside: "Because we haven't seen measles for a while, I think people forget that measles can be a serious illness. "It's not pleasant to have and it can have some quite severe complications, it can cause things like pneumonia"People who get measles sometimes end up in hospital. It's not an illness that you would want to have if there is, as there is, a pretty good preventative intervention that you can take." Measles infections usually start with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose and coughing and sneezing, according to the NHS. This is followed within days by a distinctive blotchy rash, which usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Dr McNulty said further outbreaks were likely across the country unless "we get really good population coverage of the MMR vaccine". She said the reason for falling vaccination rates was a "mixed picture"."I think some of it is that people tend to forget that it's a serious illness and so don't necessarily prioritize the vaccination for their children," she said. Deliberate "anti-vaccination sentiment" was another reason, she said, adding: "I think that there is misinformation that people are maybe grabbing hold of and not, you know, using other sources of trusted information to try and debate that."Dr McNulty said the MMR vaccine "has a lot of evidence around its safety" and urged anyone with concerns to speak to their GP or healthcare providers. Children are usually given an initial dose of the MMR jab just before their first birthday, with the second administered after they turn three. However, Dr McNulty said that was in the process of changing, and children born within the last year would be eligible to get a second dose at about 18 months who has not already received the vaccine can also request it from their GP at any age. Everton and Jarrad Branthwaite close to agreement over new contract
Everton and defender Jarrad Branthwaite are close to an agreement over a new contract. Manchester United saw £35million and £45m plus add-ons offers for the England international rejected last summer and he has continued to stay on the radar of top clubs. The 23-year-old's current terms run until 2027 with the club holding the option of a further year but, while nothing is yet signed, discussions have progressed well with an agreement over a fresh long-term deal now seen as close. 'Good players will always be linked with moves away, especially good young players,' the Everton manager said. 'But you have to remember Jarrad's got a three-year contract left, he's got two years and a year's option so if anything Everton hold all the cards regarding that player. 'But I have to also say over the journey I've had over many years at Everton we've had to sell different players from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott. 'Apart from being a football manager, especially at certain clubs you have to sell on the journey to try and build as well. But I wouldn't think that Jarrad one of the players I would want to lose, that's for sure.' Branthwaite has made 86 appearances for the club since joining from Carlisle United in January 2020, including 33 in all competitions this past season. He made his senior England debut last summer before missing out on selection for the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024. That appearance, against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is his sole outing to date. Everton have been well protected when it comes to Branthwaite. He has two years remaining on his contract, plus a club option for a third. But his situation is atypical. He signed his last deal in the autumn of 2023, just as he was cementing a regular first-team berth. The Carlisle United academy graduate is a key player now, but not one of Everton's top earners. In that sense, there is a disconnect. Advertisement The club have made it clear of their desire not only to retain his services this summer, but by retaining him on new terms. This has become a key issue for new owners The Friedkin Group, manager David Moyes and CEO Angus Kinnear.
