Porteous comes full circle to Al Ain and tees it up again where it all came together
However, the Englishman approaches the event from an entirely different perspective to when he put together a flawless final round of 63 to win a second HotelPlanner Tour title finishing e shot clear of Frenchman Alexander Levy.
Despite the triumph on home soil and retaining his HotelPlanner Tour playing privileges after the 2024 Road to Mallorca, Porteous decided to call time on his 10-year playing career, which saw him compete on both the HotelPlanner Tour and the DP World Tour.
'All the travel was just wearing away at me,' said Porteous, who continues to work in the golf industry as a brand manager. 'I just kind of fell out of love with playing tournament golf, to be honest. Being away from my wife, friends, and family takes its toll and eats away at you.
'I did my PGA qualification, which opens a lot more doors than just playing. I felt it was the right time for me to call it a day, as I wanted to explore other things instead of playing professional golf all my life.
'At the end of the day, everyone has to retire at some point. For me, the timing was right, and it was the best decision.'
Although he stepped away from full-time life on Tour, the 35-year-old couldn't resist the opportunity to compete once again on home soil.
Last week, he returned to the DP World Tour's feeder circuit at the UAE Challenge, held at Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club, with his victory on the HotelPlanner Tour last year securing him a spot in the UAE double-header.
Now living a very different life from his days as a touring professional, where a relentless daily grind was essential to staying at the top of his game, Porteous has embraced a new approach to prepare for the defence of his trophy on familiar ground.
'I've been playing the odd Emirates PGA competition as I'm eligible for those because I'm PGA qualified,' he said.
'Kieran Pratt (Championship Director, Emirates Golf Federation) does an amazing job setting up the schedule for all the pros out here to compete and puts a bit of money into it - luckily enough, I've won a couple of them.
'It's great for me, as I've obviously been living here for a couple of years but never really had a chance to meet the other teaching pros or those in the golf industry, so it's been very beneficial for me to play those events.'
In the Garden City, Porteous carded rounds of 74 and 70, missing the cut in his first HotelPlanner Tour start since October.
Given his decision to step back from the daily grind of life on Tour, the result came as little surprise for the former Amateur Championship winner, who heads into this week's event with similarly modest expectations.
That said, his fond memories of the venue and appreciation for a course that complements his game have him quietly aiming to make it through to the weekend.
'I've got great memories of my victory in Al Ain last year,' he said.
'It's very beneficial to be long off the tee, which I usually am, and then you have to be great on the greens because it's a very scorable course, so you need to make a lot of birdies. I'm really looking forward to getting back up there, but honestly, I have no expectations of what I'm going to do this week or how my prep will be.
'I really enjoyed the atmosphere up in Al Ain. It's a lot more chill than Dubai - you can certainly escape from the hustle and bustle! I'm staying up there as well, so it will be nice to just take it all in again and relive some memories.
'I'll be happy if I can make the cut. To string four rounds together would be amazing because it's something I haven't done in a while. Let's see how it goes.'
Porteous will compete alongside a host of star names aiming to secure their place on the DP World Tour next season, including last week's champion Renato Paratore, two-time DP World Tour winner Eddie Pepperell, Dubai-based Adri Arnaus, and the UAE's own Joshua Grenville-Wood.
Crucial support for the tournament comes from Abu Dhabi Sports Council, UAE-headquartered Arena, Al Laith, and eGolf Megastore. Golf fans can attend the event free of charge, with world-class action on display throughout the week.

"I've noticed, both in my training and when coaching others, that the heat doesn't mean people stop, it just means they change when and how they train,' he said. He said that he often runs early in the morning or later in the evening. 'I often move runs to early mornings before the sun is fully out, like the Grey Days 5K social runs hosted with New Balance or opt for evening sessions after work when it's a bit cooler," he said. "On days when the heat is unbearable, I take my runs indoors to the treadmill to stay on track safely." He added that this shift during summer months required more planning. 'An early morning run means prioritising sleep the night before and staying hydrated in advance,' he said. 'Evening sessions require planning meals and water intake carefully throughout the day to avoid cramping and ensure my body is fuelled to perform." Marked shift in workout routine According to Julien Khoury, founder of Dubai wellness centre Breasy, they have seen a "distinct shift" in workout preferences as the warmer months approach. "There's a growing inclination towards early morning starts to fully capitalise on the cooler hours before the sun reaches its peak," she said. "Also, as the day winds down, we see a strong pull towards later evening sessions." She said that Breasy had responded to this demand by adjusting timings and offering a relaxed schedule. "For our outdoor offerings like yoga sessions, gym workouts, and run club, we've moved to earlier morning starts,' she said. 'Our sunset and evening sessions now begin slightly later, always culminating with an invigorating cold plunge. We also understand that summer brings a natural ebb and flow with holidays, so we've adopted a more relaxed and reduced schedule. This flexibility ensures our community members can travel and return without missing a beat. For example, our popular floating breathwork sessions at Aura Skypool are now running bi-weekly through the summer.' Workouts with ice Fitness company GymNation took advantage of the summer months by offering a one-of-a-kind workout session at one of its branches. The 'Coolest Class in Dubai' fitness experience, which was offered at the Motor City branch every Saturday in July, included workouts with ice and fans. One of the activities, Blizzard Sprints, required participants to run on treadmills against giant fans. The Polar Push involved sledge pushes with ice blocks, and the Glacier Grip challenge included ice-bucket farmer carries. According to Rory McEntee, the company's Chief Marketing Officer, the response to these unique classes was 'overwhelmingly positive' and the sessions may be extended. 'Classes have booked out so quickly that we've implemented a ballot system to keep it fair and give as many people as possible the chance to participate,' he said. He highlighted the transformation of the public transport sector, describing it as the 'backbone of mobility' across the emirate. Since 2006, the share of journeys made using public and shared transport has increased from 6 per cent to 21.6 per cent by the end of 2024. Spanning 30 kilometres and comprising 14 stations, the new line is expected to serve nine key districts with a combined population of one million. In line with its sustainability goals, the RTA also announced the procurement of 637 buses, including 40 electric vehicles, compliant with Euro 6 low-emission standards, the first and largest such fleet in the UAE. 'They also align with our strategic objective to convert the entire public bus fleet to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2050,' Al Tayer added. BurJuman Station, serving both lines, recorded the highest ridership at 6 million. Al Rigga Station followed with 8 million, and Union Station with 6.6 million. On the Red Line, Mall of the Emirates (5.6 million), Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall (5.4 million), and Business Bay (5.3 million) were top performers. On the Green Line, Sharaf DG Station led with 1 million riders, followed by Baniyas (4.1 million) and Stadium Station (3.6 million). Other transit modes The Dubai Tram carried 4.9 million riders, while public buses transported 95.7 million. Marine transport services, including water buses, ferries, and abras, served 9.7 million passengers. Shared mobility options — including ride-hailing apps, hourly rentals, and on-demand buses — accounted for 37.6 million riders. Meanwhile, taxi services transported 103.5 million riders, making them the second-largest mode by usage after the Metro. Building an integrated ecosystem RTA's strategy hinges on developing an integrated and sustainable transportation network that connects all transit modes — from metro lines to marine services, first-and-last-mile solutions, and shared mobility. This includes not only expanding the physical infrastructure, such as roads and stations, but also investing in smart transport systems that increase the efficiency of traffic and public transport management. Other key initiatives include: Enhancing pedestrian and cycling facilities. Improving connectivity between different modes. Implementing policies that encourage the shift away from private vehicle use. Looking ahead to 2030 As part of its long-term strategy, the RTA aims to increase the share of trips made using public and shared transport from 21.6 per cent today to 25 per cent by 2030.
