Selfies at Gawalmandi, silence elsewhere
Despite severe urban flooding on Wednesday that submerged 70pc of the city's Cantonment areas and major markets — such as Raja Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, and others — under 2 to 3 feet of water, no senior officials visited the affected neighbourhoods.
Instead, key figures including the commissioner, deputy commissioner, RDA director general, WASA MD, and other officials arrived at Gawalmandi Bridge after the rain had stopped, took selfies, gave brief statements about drainage efforts, and left in vehicles.
This location has unofficially become a "photo-op point" for flood assessment. The bridge is cleaned and freshly painted before each high-profile visit, and nearby traffic is halted during these inspections. Unlike other vulnerable bridges over Nullah Leh, which officials avoid due to potential public backlash, Gawalmandi Bridge remains the preferred spot due to its security and easy access.
Sources indicate that all federal and provincial ministers, MPs, and department heads will be brought to this same site during the monsoon season.
Even if Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visits Rawalpindi for flood assessment, she is expected to be taken to this bridge.
Local civic groups, including the Citizen Action Committee, have strongly criticised the practice. Chairman Malik Zaheer Awan has demanded that officials visit flood-affected areas and announce immediate relief of Rs100,000 per victim.
District Bar Association President Sardar Manzar Bashir also condemned the symbolic monitoring from Gawalmandi, calling it inadequate for understanding the full extent of the disaster.
Citizen Action Committee warned of a mass protest at Gawalmandi Bridge if this "selfie drama" does not end.

'Fuel levy hurts low-income families'
Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar has accused both the federal and provincial governments led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of burdening the people with heavy taxation, mishandling fuel pricing, and politicising the recent Swat tourist tragedy. Bhachar also accused Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz of misleading the public by claiming the provincial budget was tax-free. "In reality, even small two-marla houses were taxed," he alleged. Turning to the recent deaths of tourists in Swat, the opposition leader accused the Punjab government of politicising the tragedy. He said that instead of pointing fingers, the provincial administration should reflect on its own shortcomings. "While the nation mourns the loss of lives in Swat, who will answer for the 23 children who died due to oxygen shortages in Pakpattan, or the 20 newborns who died during deliveries in a single week?" he asked. He condemned the reported closure of 1,132 basic health centres across Punjab, which he claimed would affect approximately 130,000 employees — many with decades of service. "These individuals deserve an explanation," he said, adding that the provincial government had yet to issue a public statement on the child fatalities or the healthcare downsizing. Commenting on the suspension of opposition lawmakers, Bhachar alleged the move was a tactic to pass legislation without dissent. "The authority to requisition the assembly was stripped from us," he said. "We've already called it a fake assembly. Our leader, Imran Khan, commended the lawmakers who resisted and protested against figures like Maryam Nawaz." Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Punjab leadership announced preparations for a province-wide protest campaign against what it described as "inhumane treatment" of former prime minister Imran Khan. "In the face of this oppression and injustice, protest is now our only remaining option," the leaders asserted in a statement. The planned protest follows directives from PTI Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan to resist what the party calls ongoing violations of constitutional and legal order.

LAHORE: Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Bhachar castigated the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) governments in the centre and Punjab for burdening the people with more taxes and politicising the Swat incident. While addressing a press conference on Wednesday, he said at midnight, the federal government raised petrol and diesel prices; it was an irony that petroleum prices are decreasing worldwide, and in Pakistan, it is the opposite. He pointed out that a tax of over Rs 100 per litre has been imposed on the common man, adding that the increase in petrol and diesel prices will heavily impact the farmers and the common man. 'Just a few days ago, the budget was presented, and the government claimed that the public would receive relief; instead, taxes were imposed on petrol. Moreover, no relief was given to the farmers,' he said. He accused Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz of falsely claiming that the Punjab budget was tax-free; in reality, she imposed a tax even on small two-marla houses. The opposition leader also castigated the Punjab government for politicising the Swat incident, which he considers a tragic event. Instead of focusing on others, they should reflect on their actions. The deaths of 23 children in Pakpattan due to a lack of oxygen and the 20 children who died during delivery within a week also deserve attention, and those responsible should be held accountable,' he said, adding that there was widespread regret over the Swat incident. On the suspension of their provincial legislators, Bhachar claimed that they were suspended so that the government could pass its bills. 'The authority to requisition was taken away from us. We believe this Assembly is unnecessary; we have already referred to it as a fake assembly. Our leader expressed appreciation for the members of the Punjab Assembly who refused to bow down to figures like Maryam Nawaz and staged a vigorous protest,' he added. LAHORE: On the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, special measures have been taken for the first time to monitor and prevent fake news for establishing law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram. A new system has been implemented and a special Control Room has been established in this regard. The CM directed to launch strict legal action against the dissemination of fake news on the social media during Muharram-ul-Haram. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, tracing of people who are involved in disseminating controversial contents on the social media accounts has been launched and a strict legal action is being taken. Dozens of controversial social media accounts have been blocked across Punjab on the report of the Special Branch. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a Cyber Patrol Unit will perform its duties for the first time in the province during Ashura. A special portal of PITB has also been activated for monitoring and reporting objectionable social media contents. The special cell will monitor 24/7 social media contents pertaining to religious hatred and sectarianism. After reporting controversial content on the portal, the account is blocked and the whereabouts of the account holder is traced. The Chief Minister directed to initiate special measures to ensure a complete ban on the promotion and publication of contents based on religious hatred and speeches. She also directed to ensure a complete ban on the usage of drone cameras under any circumstance. She directed to carry out the deployment of a Quick Response Force to ensure complete security of Muharram processions and gatherings. Iron pipes will be installed on all sides for security purposes during the Muharram processions. Special cameras will be installed at the entrance gate of every procession during the Ashura so that the visitors can be identified by their faces. The CM directed to deploy female police officers and personnel for the security of female mourners in the gatherings and processions. She highlighted, 'The Karbala incident imparts us a lesson to adopt peace and tolerance. All possible steps will be taken to ensure peace and order during the Ashura.' She asserted, 'In the context of the current global situation, the holy month of Muharram is extremely sensitive and there is absolutely no room for committing negligence by the relevant stakeholders in the performance of their duties.'
