Reacher Brit Sonya Cassidy Shares Boston Accent Prep Diet: ‘Marky Mark, The Departed… Whitey Bulger'
Maybe you know that Reacher Season 3 co-star Sonya Cassidy is British. Maybe you don't. Regahdless, you probably have opinions on the Boston accent the Lodge 49 alum affected for her role as DEA Agent Susan Duffy.

In the TVLine Q&A below, Cassidy shares how she gave her voice that special Beantown flavor, explains why she held back on her mad Taekwondo moves when Duffy gets to throwing hands, and reveals whether any Aquaman jokes were tried out when Smallville alum Alan Ritchson made like a (super-swole) fish.
TVLINE | Tell us, what drives Susan Duffy throughout Season 3?If there's a line that sums up how Duffy operates, it's, 'I don't let bad guys walk.' That informs who she is entirely. It's what got her into the DEA and she's worked her ass off to get where she is.
She is immensely smart and capable, but we meet her a point where she is just about keeping her head above water. Like, it has really hit the fan in a way that she would never have imagined, and she desperately, passionately has to make it right, and that's entertaining to watch, hopefully. You're seeing a woman who is aware of the mistakes she's made unintentionally, and she will lose everything if it means that she can save Teresa [the kidnapped CI].
What's wonderful about this season is there is much of Duffy and her trio. She cares so much about Villanueva (9-1-1: Lone Star's Roberto Montesinos) who has carefully mentored her through the years and is about to retire and have a well-earned rest. And she's got this rookie, Elliot (Daniel David Stewart), who is very green and she's responsible for him. But she's struggling a lot, so Reacher's entry into her life is very, very well-timed — even if it does throw open a whole other can of worms in the process.
TVLINE | I want to talk about the accent that you use on the show. What are we calling it, 'New England'…?Yeah. I was told 'Boston.'
TVLINE | Was it in case of, 'We really want to cast you… but can you do this for us?' Or did you know going in you'd have to do a Boston accent? When I was asked to audition, I was asked to do a Boston accent, so I very quickly watched as much as I could to do what was at that point probably not a very good Boston accent. And then when I got the job, I had time with a dialect coach and I just kept going back to clips I found.—
TVLINE | You watched every Ben Affleck and Matt Damon movie.Oh, yeah. Affleck, all the Marky Mark, Spotlight… The Departed…. also lovely old clips from, like, when [Boston area crime boss] Whitey Bulger was caught. Now, that's pretty heightened, but it was just gorgeous to listen to. I love accents, they are so much more than sounds, they're like a psychology and a place and a culture, and it really helped inform who Duffy is. Like, none of what Duffy says would sound right in my like, 'Oh, helloooo!' British accent and way of being. But they asked for Boston and I tried to give them Boston. (Watch/listen to Cassidy discuss the accent in the video above.)
TVLINE | Any firsts for you as an actress in this role? Some of the stunt stuff was new for me. I'm not sure how much I can divulge without spoiling, but there were some pretty big stunts for me, dealing with pyrotechnics at the same time. It was highly technical, where we've 'got one chance to do this!' It's cold, it's dark, it's the middle of the night, it's taken hours to set up, and we've got one shot. That's terrifying — and very, very exciting.
TVLINE | You have a black belt in Taekwondo. Did you get to work that into any of Duffy's fight scenes?Well, I thought I would, but actually it's a very different type of movement and that's where what's right for the character comes in, because Duffy's more of a brawler. She would have had some combat training, but in a bar she'd just throw a punch if you grabbed her ass or something, whereas Taekwondo is a Korean martial art with a very different physicality. You're more centered and there's a kind of refinement to it, whereas Duffy isn't refined at all. So, it was nice to have to take on the challenge of 'unlearning' in a funny kind of way. And physically, it was quite hard. My body just kept going into the old movements, but we ironed them out.
TVLINE | There are a couple of scenes where we see Alan Ritchson swimming, and he play Aquaman on . Was there any take at any point where Duffy refers to him as 'Hey, Aquaman'?No, I don't believe so. And I've not done any in ADR. But we still have time, maybe we can work it in!Best of TVLine

James Gunn Reveals What Peacemaker S1E1 Scene Isn't Canon to DCU
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed which scene from the first episode of Peacemaker Season 1 won't be canon to the DC Universe. This comes ahead of the John Cena-led DCU series' HBO Max return on August 21 for its long-awaited second season. Peacemaker is created, written, and directed by Gunn, who also serves as its showrunner. Season 2 will feature the return of Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. Joining them are new cast members Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows. Which Peacemaker Season 1 scene isn't canon to the DCU? In the debut episode of the Peacemaker Podcast, Gunn shared some new behind-the-scenes stories and interesting details from Peacemaker Season 1 Episode 1. One of these details includes clarifying which scene from the episode was going to change due to the DCU. When asked about the opening scene from the first episode, which featured Cena's Peacemaker hilariously arguing with a hospital worker about Aquaman, Gunn confirmed that fans will have to disregard the scene since Aquaman won't be a famous superhero during the current timeline of his DCU. 'One of the things that people are most confused by, as Peter Safran and I took over DC is, what is part of the DCU? This is the world that Superman lives in. This is the world that the Creature Commandos lives in. Up until this point, those are the only two things that are fully 100% canon. And the same thing is going to be true about Peacemaker Season 2. It's fully 100% canon in the DC, but we did have to go back and change a few things from Season 1,' Gunn clarified. 'Is Aquaman canon? We don't know. But my guess, I don't think Aquaman's canon. It's unlikely that Aquaman is a famous hero in the DCU as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 is happening. That's unlikely. But other than that, I really think everything in this episode, I think, is canon.' (Source: Threads) Solve the daily Crossword

Go behind the scenes with the ‘Alien: Earth' cast at Comic-Con 2025
SAN DIEGO — Sydney Chandler has wanted to attend San Diego Comic-Con as a fan for years. So it's 'surreal' that the actor's first experience with the annual pop culture expo is to promote her upcoming FX series 'Alien: Earth.' Chandler stars in the 'Alien' prequel as Wendy, a young girl whose consciousness has been transferred to an android. 'To be able to do it in this capacity is just mind-blowing,' she tells The Times in advance of the show's Hall H premiere on Friday. 'It's emotional because we worked on this for so long and I learned so much. … I'm kind of at a loss of words.' She does have words of appreciation, though, including for what she's learned from her character. 'Her journey of finding out how to hold her own and stand on her own two feet taught me so much,' says Chandler. 'I'm an overthinker. I'm an anxious person. I would have run so fast. I would not be as brave as her, but she taught me … that it's OK to just stand on your own two feet, and that's enough. That's powerful.' Even before the show's Hall H panel, fans have gathered on the sidewalk outside of the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego to catch a glimpse of Chandler and her 'Alien: Earth' cast mates Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin and Babou Ceesay, along with creator Noah Hawley and executive producer David Zucker, on their short trek to the bus that would transport them to the convention center for the show's world premiere. On the ride over, Hawley betrays no nerves about people seeing the first episode. 'I really think, in a strange way, it plays for all ages because it is about growing up on some level,' says the showrunner. 'But it's also 'Alien,' and it is a meditation on power and corporate power. ' Huddled together on the bus with Lawther and Blenkin, Ceesay is surprised to learn that this is the first time attending San Diego Comic-Con for all three. There's plenty of good-natured ribbing as they talk about the early interviews they've completed at the event. 'I just sort of want to make jokes with you all the time,' says Lawther as he looks towards his cast mates. 'I find it quite giddy in the experience, and I had to remind myself that I'm a professional.' 'Sometimes the British sarcasm instinct just kicks in,' Blenkin adds. Their playful dynamic continues as they joke about crashing Ceesay's other panel, and also backstage at Hall H as they try to sneak up on each other in the dark. After the panel, the cast is whisked away for video interviews and signing posters at a fan meet-and-greet at a booth on the exhibit floor. ('Timothy, you're the man!' shouts a fan passing by.) Later, Hawley, Chandler and Ceesay will hit the immersive 'Alien: Earth' activation where they will explore the wreckage of a crashed ship. 'It's such a safe space for people who just enjoy cinema and enjoy film,' Chandler says of Comic-Con. 'And that's me. I'm a complete nerd for all this stuff, so just to be around that group — it reminds me of why I love film so much in the first place.'

US woman with tattoos and nose piercing may be descendent of Queen Victoria's secret lovechild
A Midwestern therapist with a mullet, tattoos and nose piercing may be a descendant of Queen Victoria's secret lovechild, a British historian has claimed. Angela Webb-Milinkovich, a mental-health practitioner from Minnesota, was named as a possible living testament to a scandalous affair between the British monarch and her devoted manservant, John Brown, by historian Fern Riddell. Webb-Milinkovich, who is in her 40s, according to online records, doesn't look like a royal but is prepared to get a DNA test to prove whether she is. 3 Angela Webb-Milinkovich, a healthcare worker in Minnesota, may be a living descendant of Queen Victoria's secret lovechild. bettylooper/Instagram Advertisement 'I feel pretty confident that there's some legitimacy to [the theory],' Webb-Milinkovich told the Times of London. 'It's not something that I myself would ever be able to confirm. 'The story that my family grew up with is that John Brown and Queen Victoria had a romantic relationship,' she said, referring to the loyal aide who the royal matriarch became particularly close to after her husband Prince Albert's death. 'They went on a long boat journey. After that, a child was produced, and from that child came my family's lineage,' Webb-Milinkovich said of Brown and the queen. Advertisement 3 Queen Victoria asked to be buried with a picture of her manservant and suspected lover John Brown. Rumors have swirled that Mary Ann Brown, Webb-Milinkovich's great-grandmother, was their lovechild. Victoria and Brown's closeness sparked rumors in Britain, and in 1866, a Swiss newspaper reported the pair had secretly married. Victoria even dedicated her book on highland life, published after Brown died in 1883, to him and asked to be buried with his picture. Advertisement 3 Brown was suspiciously close to blue-blooded boss Victoria, some historians say. The rumored affair was the subject of the 1997 movie 'Mrs Brown,' which won Dame Judi Dench an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Victoria. Although the alleged affair has been dismissed by many historians, Riddell said she has unearthed new evidence indicating a relationship. The evidence includes a cast of Brown's hand ordered by the monarch in the days after his death, something she had previously done for her late husband. Advertisement A previously secret diary entry from Victoria also describes how she and her 'beloved John' confessed their love for each other. 'Their relationship has been downplayed and sanitized,' Riddell told the Times of London. 'I hope we give John Brown back his place in history and his legacy, which is that he was Victoria's de facto royal consort for 20 years,' said the researcher, author of the book 'Victoria's Secret.'
