Real Life 'Munna Bhai MBBS'? Fake Assam Doctor Who Performed 50 C-Sections Arrested
Last Updated: Pulok Malakar, posing as a doctor for over a decade, was arrested in Silchar, for performing over 50 surgeries without valid qualifications A man posing as a doctor for over a decade has been arrested in Silchar, Assam, for allegedly performing more than 50 caesarean and gynaecological surgeries without any valid medical qualification. The accused, Pulok Malakar, had been working at two private hospitals in Silchar and was widely known as a gynaecologist. His arrest followed a tip-off, after which police raided Shibsundari Nari Shiksha Seva Ashram Hospital in Silchar while he was in the operation theatre performing a C-section, NDTV reported. 'We got information about him and started an investigation. After verification of all the documents, we found that all his certificates are fake. He was a fake medical practitioner and was running the business for many years," said senior police officer Numal Mahatta. Malakar, a resident of Sribhumi in Assam, was produced before a local court on Monday and sent to five-day police custody. His arrest is part of a larger crackdown in Assam on fake doctors. In January 2025, the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formed the Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Cell — a dedicated unit working with the police to identify unqualified individuals posing as medical professionals. Since its formation, the cell has filed 13 FIRs and arrested 10 fake doctors across the state. One suspect remains on the run, and two cases are under investigation. Most of the individuals caught have been targeting lower and middle-income patients in both rural and urban areas. Last month, four fake doctors were arrested — two in Nagaon and two in Jorhat — after FIRs were filed by state anti-quackery officer Dr Abhijit Neog. All four are now in judicial custody and have been booked under various charges, including cheating, criminal breach of trust, and offences under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court has dismissed the interim bail application of Amritpal Singh , an accused in a major narcotics case linked to the seizure of 103 kg of heroin at the Attari border in April 2022. Singh had sought interim bail under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act on humanitarian grounds, citing the need to arrange and care for his wife — a college professor — who is scheduled to undergo gall bladder surgery. A resident of Tarn Taran, Punjab, Singh was apprehended on December 12, 2023, at Amritsar Airport while allegedly attempting to flee to Dubai. A lookout circular had been issued against him five days earlier, on December 7. The NIA also noted that the trial is set to begin before the Special NIA Court in Delhi. Justice Ravinder Dudeja rejected Singh's application after considering submissions made by NIA counsel Advocate Shilpa Singh, who reiterated that the petitioner's wife, a faculty member at Guru Arjan Dev College, is capable of managing the situation in his absence. Delhi HC rejects interim bail plea of Amritpal Singh in Atari drug haul case
Delhi HC rejects interim bail plea of Amritpal Singh in Atari drug haul case NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has rejected the interim bail application of Amritpal Singh , an accused in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act related to the seizure of 103 kg of heroin at the Atari border by the Immigration Department in April 2022. The interim bail was sought on the grounds of gall bladder surgery scheduled for his wife, who is a professor. Petitioner Amritpal Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, Punjab, was detained on December 12, 2023, at the Amritsar Airport while attempting to flee to Dubai. Earlier, a lookout corner notice was issued against him on December 7, 2023. Justice Ravinder Dudeja rejected the interim bail plea, noting the submissions of the advocate Shilpa Singh, counsel for the National Investigation Agency ( NIA ). The NIA opposed the plea, submitting that other family members were available to look after the petitioner's wife, who is a faculty member at Guru Arjan Dev College. It was further submitted that the family was financially stable. An application for a grant of interim bail was made on the grounds that the wife of the applicant has been advised of a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. It was submitted by his counsel that his wife is to be operated upon and the gall bladder is to be removed. There are two minor children. There is no one to look after his wife, and he has to arrange for the funds for surgery. This submission was opposed by the counsel for NIA, and advocate Shilpa Singh submitted that the family is financially sound, and the patient herself is a professor in the college. She also submitted that the trial is going to commence from tomorrow at the special NIA court in New Delhi. Another accused, Vipin Mitta, was granted bail by the Delhi High Court on May 30, 2023.
