Pier Point in Torquay, Devon was recently named as the UK's best fish and chip shop by the F ishermen's Mission Awards.
The Fishermen's Mission charity fights poverty in UK fishing communities by providing support to fishermen and their families.
And all of the fish sold at Pier Point Chippy, including cod, haddock and plaice, is MSC certified - which means it comes from well-managed, sustainable fisheries.
The fish and chip shop was even named the best in the UK in The Times' 25 of the UK's best spots for seaside fish and chips.
Describing the inside, The Times stated: "At sunset on a good day, streaks of orange fill the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround Pier Point, and you might as well be in California.
"The restaurant is adjacent to the marina, with spectacular bay views, and it oozes atmosphere — you're in for a good time whether you settle on a wave-shaped red banquette indoors, at an outdoor table, or opt for takeaway with your bag of goodies on the beach."
With my childhood home being close to the spot, I decided to see whether it lived up to the awards.
The venue itself is split into two sections: a sit-down restaurant and a takeaway fish and chippy.
And both sit right next to Torquay's sparkling water, a sprawling beach and a fascinating harbour – a setting so idyllic it feels like stepping onto a Mediterranean promenade.
So instead of sitting at a table, I grabbed my portions and headed for the nearby pier to soak up the sun while enjoying my food.

Admittedly, Pier Point is on the pricier side.
For three servings - a regular portion of haddock and chips, a regular portion of light cod and chips, and a regular portion of salt and pepper squid and chips plus a pot of curry sauce - it came to £38.
After paying and walking to the pier, my expectations were already high.
Despite the slightly steeper price, the portions were decent and we hadn't waited longer than five minutes for it all to be cooked up.
Opening up the boxes, the aroma of hot, vinegary chips and crisp batter filled the air.
The haddock itself was large and the batter was crisp and buttery.
The cod similarly was a good size and cooked perfectly.
The squid - which comes with a sauce of your choosing - was cooked just right, making it not too chewy.
And if my dog could talk, I think he would agree the chips were super tasty - not too greasy and never feeling like 'just potato'.

The fish also came with a slice of lemon each - a nice touch to add if you want it.
So, was it worthy of the award? I'd say so.
And the area surrounding the chippy makes it even better.
If you choose to grab a portion from Pier Point, head onto the pier for a walk after to see beautiful views across the bay.
Or head to the harbour to see some of the most glamourous boats and yachts around.
Alternatively, if you head in the other direction, there is Abbey Sands - a large expansive beach with shallow waters and popular with families.

Torquay is dubbed the 'English Riviera' for a reason and as you wander around you will see many towering palm trees and vibrant flowers.
During the summer months, there is also a giant Ferris wheel which boasts panoramic views of the coastline.
Agatha Christie is also famous to Torquay as she spent much of her life there.
Many of her novels are either set in or inspired by the seaside town and visitors can explore the Agatha Christie Mile - a walking trail featuring places Agatha visited and featured in her work.

We found ourselves on the seafront having built up quite the appetite.
At the Offshore Bar & Restaurant on the harbourside we wolf down a seafood platter.
Plump prawns and steaming mussels are accompanied by fresh crab, hot smoked salmon and a delicate pan-fried sea bass.
The platter was created as part of the annual England's Seafood Feast — held this year from September 26 to October 12.
The event celebrates the best of the English Riviera's fish and seafood, with everything from tours of Brixham Fish Market to barbecues and kayak cookouts.
There are special offers at more than 30 restaurants across Brixham, Paignton, Torquay and the surrounding countryside.
At night, we take the fishy feast up another level with a £55 five-course tasting menu featuring bass, brill and more at Circa, the intimate restaurant at the Sandridge Barton vineyard in the Dart Valley.
A chance to explore the coastline on a thrilling, high-speed RIB (rigid inflatable boat) brought a completely different perspective of the sea.

A FLOCK of ducks get an escort across busy roads to their nightly nesting spot. Volunteer wardens watch as they waddle from a river to a town centre car park. 4 4 4 4 Around 20 make the 15-minute journey every evening at 8.30pm from the Cod Beck in Thirsk, North Yorks, to the market square — where they settle down on the cobbles until around 4.30am. A quack team of locals make sure they don't get in a flap on the journey and put protective cones around the birds at night. The ducks make the trip between mid June and early December. It is thought they want to evade mink, foxes and rats. The 15 volunteers started a rota after four ducks were run over by a car last year. Organiser Jodie Wood, 41, said: 'I've never seen this done before. 'Sometimes we get drunk revellers trying to touch them, mess with them and walk through them. 'But 99 per cent of the time it's fine and people come to chat and take pictures, Something is scaring them away. "But we've not had any fatalities since we started. We are lucky to have so much support.' Fellow volunteer Emma-Jayne Hutchings, 48, said: 'It's really heart-warming and adorable. 'You know when they are leaving as they all start quacking, then they march up in two battalions.'

I visited the English theme park that's launched first-ever overnight stays – with new safari lodges and glamping tents
THE Cornish drizzle had set in upon arrival at our 'safari lodge' but nothing was going to dampen our spirits. After all, this wasn't just any accommodation — we had a theme park as our back garden. 5 5 5 Family favourite Camel Creek has welcomed visitors to its award-winning adventure park near Padstow since 1989, but until now, the fun always had to end at closing time. Following a £1million investment, this beloved Cornwall attraction now welcomes guests overnight with the launch of Camel Creek Camping & Glamping. And my 11-year-old daughter Lexi, husband Paul and I were among the first families to experience it. The site offers grass, hard-standing, and all-weather touring pitches plus luxurious glamping options including bell tents and safari lodges. The whole area has been beautifully landscaped: Think lots of twinkling lights, greenery and space. Our safari lodge, aptly named Sunset, overlooked West Country farmland stretching to the horizon. More importantly, it was just a two-minute walk from more than 40 thrilling rides and attractions. Despite being a sophisticated tent rather than a solid building, the lodge was surprisingly spacious — big enough to sleep nine — though smaller family safari tents sleeping up to four are also available. And it came with a private deck, en-suite bathroom and fully equipped kitchen. We were amazed by the luxury touches: Super-soft linens, quality towels and proper kitchen utensils that made it feel like a premium hotel under canvas. The seaside town of Newlyn in Cornwall has been dubbed as one of the 'coolest' places to relocate Luckily for us, Camel Creek is a fantastic day out no matter what the weather, as many of the rides and attractions are under cover. The park boasts more than 45,000sq ft of indoor play areas, ensuring families can enjoy themselves even on rainy days. Key covered attractions include the newly designed Hidden Garden indoor play and cafe, Creeky's Playhouse (an indoor soft play area), the 5D Theatre with moving seats and 3D glasses and various animal encounters housed in indoor facilities like the reptile house. The water rides are probably the best for adrenaline junkies — and those who don't mind getting wet, which Lexi didn't. As it was quiet due to the weather, she went on her favourite water ride Thunder Falls, six times in a row — drenched, yet in high spirits, by the time she got off. Luckily a hot shower was only moments away. Merlin's Magical Playground is ideal for younger children, and home to a ball pit and slides. Leopard cats Animal lovers will enjoy the meerkats, pets corner and the reptile house. And new for this year are owls and leopard cats. My favourite ride was Raging Rivers, water slides you bomb down. The climb up is a bit arduous, but it's worth the effort. Standing more than 20ft above the ground, it offers two different slide experiences — a long bumpy ride or an almost vertical-drop smooth ride that will leave your heart racing. After a few hours in the park, we headed back to our lodge to dry off then ventured out to the on-site restaurant. There is also a shop selling basic provisions if you want to cook. If it had been warm enough, we would have fired up the barbecue that came with our safari lodge set-up. Another time. The flexibility of having both indoor dining options and the ability to self-cater made our stay incredibly convenient, especially with unpredictable weather. After an action-packed day we were happy to retire to our lodge. The insulation and heating worked brilliantly, making the lodge surprisingly warm and cosy. It was hard to believe we were under canvas. Although the wind whipped up a little, we all slept well and stayed warm enough during the night. The next day, we had a couple more hours in the park. Arriving as it opened, we were delighted to be among the first on many of the rides. We loved our night of glamping at Camel Creek, even with the typical British weather doing its worst. With its mix of indoor attractions and cosy canvas accommodation, rain or shine, it's fantastic family fun. 5 5
