Several Mohali villages pass resolutions, say won't give land to govt
However, Land Acquisition Collector (LAC) Sanjeev Kumar claimed that around two dozen farmers from the region submitted written consents to give their land. 'These farmers will be brought to the notice of senior officials,' he said.
Bakarpur village panch Gurpartap Singh said, 'Bari, Matran, Siau, Kurari, Patton Bakarpur, Chhat and Kishanpura villages passed resolutions in their gram sabhas, outright rejecting the new policy and refusing to give their land. The farmers not only denied discussions with the GMADA team but also did not allow any photography or videography of the meeting.'
'The panchayats of Patton, Siau, Kishanpura, Bakarpur and Kurari 'submitted formal letters of objection with signatures of sarpanchs, panchs, village heads, and other notable residents to the GMADA team,' Gurpartap Singh added.
Bakarpur sarpanch Sukhwinder Singh pointed out, 'According to maps shown earlier, 175 acres along the road from the Airport road to Derri village were supposed to include commercial plots for farmers. However, no such plots were allotted, despite prior promises.'
Kurari village sarpanch Nahar Singh said farmers termed the policy 'anti-farmer'. 'Farmers accused GMADA of offering residential and commercial plots of lesser value. They said GMADA is not allotting adjoining plots,' Nahar Singh added.
'We want development, but development with equality,' said farmer leader Gurminder Singh of Bakarpur.'You can't build cities and towers by uprooting those who give you their land. What kind of development is this? Government officers have permanent jobs and salaries, but farmers will be left with nothing. We don't want this kind of exploitative development.'
The LAC said, 'The GMADA team will not visit villages that have already submitted written refusals.'
Urging farmers to 'entirely reject' the acquisition of their land under the AAP government's land scheme, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday announced a series of protests, beginning with Ludhiana on July 15, against the policy.
Criticising Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for 'handing over Punjab to the 'Delhi East India Company,' Badal claimed that 'small farmers would lose the most', citing unequal return of land based on ownership size and restrictions on sale, loans, or change of land use. 'We will not allow this loot to take place,' he said.
Dubbing the land acquisition policy 'a land grab aimed at benefiting private developers from Delhi', Badal said the AAP government was acquiring 40,000 acres in 158 villages under the Punjab Regional Town Planning and Development Act, 1995, instead of using the central Land Acquisition Act, 2013.
'This is not a pooling scheme but a land-grabbing scheme. The AAP leadership wants to collect Rs 10,000 crore by acquiring land at minimal compensation,' he said.
The SAD chief accused the Punjab government of 'working with Delhi-based developers' and claimed that 'land is being acquired on their request'.
'Meetings have been held with Delhi builders. The government plans to lease, auction, or allot land to them under Sections 43 and 56 of the Punjab Act,' Badal alleged.
Badal said subsequent protests would take place across Punjab, including in Mohali, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala, and other cities.
The SAD chief alleged that Mann 'surrendered' the chairmanship of land authorities to the chief secretary and warned the bureaucrat 'not to become a party to this illegality'.

A fresh political slugfest has broken out in Delhi with the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Joginder Singh Bunty in connection with an alleged illegal betting racket Saturday night. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost no time in demanding Bunty's expulsion — a move aimed at cornering a party already struggling to find political footing after it was ousted from power following the Assembly elections in the city earlier this year. However, the AAP shot back and stuck to its expected line of defence, accusing the BJP of targeting rivals. Bunty, a first-time councillor, was arrested along with six others from an office on Kadipur Road in Southwest Delhi, where the police claimed an illegal gambling operation was underway. 'The police arrested seven people from an office on Kadipur Road for being involved in a gambling operation on Saturday night. A tip-off was received about the operation,' a senior police officer said. The AAP leader, however, is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, a video had surfaced online, showing him brandishing a revolver while dancing during his campaign for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, which had led to the registration of a case under the Arms Act. Bunty had still won the elections, defeating the candidates of the BJP, the Congress and two Independents. However, the latest case comes at a time when the AAP, which until recently had held power in both the Delhi Assembly and the MCD, is scrambling to regain its foothold in the city. The BJP's sweeping win in the Assembly elections earlier this year was followed by it reclaiming the MCD, which AAP had wrested in the 2022 civic polls after 15 years of BJP rule. The ruling party used Bunty's arrest to reinforce how AAP, which once promised a clean break from traditional politics, has since been mired in controversies. Reacting to the arrest, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva questioned AAP's stance on the matter and said, 'Will Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj expel this gambling councillor, or will he once again dismiss it as a BJP conspiracy?' Sachdeva said the incident reflected a 'new face' of the party since it lost power in the MCD, and accused the AAP leaders of a pattern of criminality. Seizing the opportunity to emphasise upon AAP's recent string of scandals, Sachdeva said, 'AAP leaders have always claimed to be part of a party that practices a different kind of politics, but Delhiites began seeing the party's real face with leaders like fake degree-holder Minister Jitendra Tomar and controversial ration-card Minister Sandeep Kumar. The latest addition to that list is Councillor Joginder Singh Bunty, arrested for running a gambling racket.' Even as Bharadwaj did not directly respond to the allegations against Bunty, the party referred to the arrest of the top guns from the party in the past. 'In the past decade, the BJP has created a situation where central government agencies and their police register false cases on an everyday basis against political adversaries. Today, it is difficult to comment on the merits of any allegation if it comes from an agency under the BJP's control,' an AAP statement read.

Azad Group joins SAD, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa to contest Tarn Taran bypoll
Jhabal (Tarn Taran): Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday announced Azad Group president Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa as the party's candidate for the Tarn Taran bypoll, marking the merger of the grassroots group into the SAD. The merger is a shot in the arm for the SAD in the rural, border constituency. Addressing a rally where he made the announcement, Sukhbir said Randhawa, along with 43 serving sarpanches, eight municipal councillors, and several former sarpanches and chairmen, had joined the SAD. He also declared Randhawa as the party's halqa in-charge for Tarn Taran. The bypoll was necessitated by June 27 passing away of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal. The Election Commission is yet to announce a date for the bypoll, but the AAP, the BJP and the SAD have already started work for the electoral contest. Three-time MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu joined the AAP last week, while BJP announced former minister Surjit Kumar Jyani as its in-charge for the constituency just a day later. Sandhu had quit SAD in 2024. At the rally in Tarn Taran's Jhabal village, Sukhbir said senior SAD functionary Gulzar Singh Ranike would be the in-charge for the bypoll campaign. He appealed to Punjabis to unite under the Akali flag to counter "outside forces" who wanted to loot the state. "These forces were behind the 2015 acts of sacrilege which were committed with the sole aim of weakening SAD. We have already called for an independent probe into these sacrilege cases as it feels that only a free-and-fair probe can unmask AAP's role in these heinous incidents," Sukhbir said. He said the AAP's role in the incidents of sacrilege was evident from the conviction of its legislator for sacrilege of the Quran. Randhawa said parties often neglected Punjab after coming to power and accused AAP govt of handing over the state's control to Delhi.

Bathinda: BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Sunday likened AAP govt's land pooling scheme in Punjab to the 2022 liquor scam in Delhi, stating that the final destination for those behind it will be jail. Speaking to media here, Thakur said Delhi-based leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, alarmed over facing jail terms in the liquor scam, were now making Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann implement the land pooling scheme. "After minting money, they will go away, and those who implement it will have to face the music," Thakur added. Thakur, who is a govt body member of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bathinda, visited the health institute duiring the day. He said a 300-bedded facility would be added shortly. He said he came to know of some medicines not being available at Jan Aushadhi and Amrit Pharmacy in AIIMS, and he would take up the matter at appropriate forums. He also accused the state govt of charging the commercial rate for electricity from AIIMS and asked it to provide electricity at subsidised rates. Thakur also hit out at AAP over a growing perception that its Delhi-based leaders were now calling the shots in Punjan. He added that elected members of AAP would start leaving it in the next six months, as they knew it had lost people's confidence. "BJP is sure to form the next govt," said Anurag. He accused the Congress-led govt in Himachal Pradesh of not providing adequate assistance to people ravaged by excessive rain, while the central govt was providing assistance.
