Azad Group joins SAD, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa to contest Tarn Taran bypoll
Shiromani Akali Dal
president
Sukhbir Singh Badal
on Sunday announced Azad Group president Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa as the party's candidate for the Tarn Taran bypoll, marking the merger of the grassroots group into the SAD.
The merger is a shot in the arm for the SAD in the rural, border constituency. Addressing a rally where he made the announcement, Sukhbir said Randhawa, along with 43 serving sarpanches, eight municipal councillors, and several former sarpanches and chairmen, had joined the SAD. He also declared Randhawa as the party's halqa in-charge for Tarn Taran.
The bypoll was necessitated by June 27 passing away of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal.
The Election Commission is yet to announce a date for the bypoll, but the AAP, the BJP and the SAD have already started work for the electoral contest. Three-time MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu joined the AAP last week, while BJP announced former minister Surjit Kumar Jyani as its in-charge for the constituency just a day later.
Sandhu had quit SAD in 2024. At the rally in Tarn Taran's Jhabal village, Sukhbir said senior SAD functionary Gulzar Singh Ranike would be the in-charge for the bypoll campaign.
He appealed to Punjabis to unite under the Akali flag to counter "outside forces" who wanted to loot the state. "These forces were behind the 2015 acts of sacrilege which were committed with the sole aim of weakening SAD. We have already called for an independent probe into these sacrilege cases as it feels that only a free-and-fair probe can unmask AAP's role in these heinous incidents," Sukhbir said.
He said the AAP's role in the incidents of sacrilege was evident from the conviction of its legislator for sacrilege of the Quran.
Randhawa said parties often neglected Punjab after coming to power and accused AAP govt of handing over the state's control to Delhi.

Nuns' arrest: Pamplany seeks Centre's intervention
Kannur: Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany on Friday criticized Centre over the arrest of two Keralite nuns — Sr Vandana Francis and Sr Preethi Mary — in Chhattisgarh. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a protest meet in Thalassery demanding justice for the nuns, Pamplany said BJP-led Chhattisgarh govt's opposition to the nuns' bail application in NIA court was condemnable and suspicious. "(Union home minister) Amit Shah's words had given us relief. But his words weren't kept in the BJP-led state (Chhattisgarh). Central govt should intervene immediately," he demanded. Some laws like anti-conversion law have been passed by some states to attack persons illegally and send them to jail, Pamplany said. "Citing the law, minority communities are being harassed. Some terror outfits are behind this. Govt should be able to handle them," he said. "If we don't get justice, we will be forced to protest on the street. The Catholic community faced many sufferings earlier too and it always strengthened the community," he added. If BJP leaders are sincere, they would have responded on the day of arrest itself, just like they react when they distribute cakes at houses of Christians," he said. He added that charges like human trafficking and conversion slapped on the nuns were baseless. "BJP leaders in Kerala are playing drama to attract the Christian community which always stood for secularism. The community will realise BJP's double standards" said Venugopal. Church heads now realise BJP's real character: Satheesan Opposition leader V D Satheesan said Church heads have now realised BJP's real character. He said that opposition warned during Christmas 2023 that wolves in sheep's clothing were arriving at bishop houses with cakes, referring to BJP's attempt to woo Christians. "Priests themselves now say that wolves in sheep's clothing came with cakes and that no one should come with cakes and crowns any more. Nationwide, Christians are being attacked. Nuns and priests cannot travel in their religious attire. We are making efforts to release the two imprisoned nuns," he said.

SAD accuses AAP of launching political vendetta against Majithia
Ludhiana: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of targeting senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia through politically motivated cases. SAD leaders claimed that Majithia was being denied civil liberties and was facing fresh legal action aimed at silencing the opposition. Addressing a press conference in Ludhiana, senior SAD leaders Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Dr Daljit Singh Cheema alleged that a false case had been registered against Majithia for allegedly obstructing a Vigilance Bureau raid at his Amritsar residence on June 25. They asserted that the raid was live-streamed, and the footage clearly showed that Majithia did not interfere with officials. Instead, they accused the Vigilance team of acting in a high-handed manner. "The team was not stopped from conducting its business in any way," said Grewal. He pointed out what he called a double standard, citing an incident where Union minister Ravneet Bittu allegedly physically stopped a police officer from arresting Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu in a corruption case. "No FIR was filed then, but Majithia is being targeted only because AAP fears his presence among the people," he added. The leaders also claimed that the FIR was a retaliatory move after SAD legislator Ganieve Kaur Majithia filed a complaint with Chandigarh Police. She accused the Vigilance Bureau of criminal trespass into her official residence without a search warrant while she was in Amritsar. "The AAP government is jittery that legal action may be taken against its own team, and that's why it rushed to file a counter FIR against Majithia," said Dr Cheema. Grewal revealed that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had sought a meeting with the Punjab governor to raise the issue. Although the governor was indisposed, the meeting is expected to take place within a week. "We will fight this battle both politically and legally. The AAP government's vendetta politics must be exposed," he said. The press conference also touched upon other controversies, including the Ananta Enclave project developed by Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali. Grewal alleged that Ayali had struck a deal with the AAP government, allowing him to construct a road on government land to access his colony. He further claimed that Ayali facilitated the entry of his son's father-in-law, former DIG Gurpreet Singh Gill, into AAP during the Ludhiana West by-election to shield himself from scrutiny. Dr Cheema also criticized the AAP government's new tender policy, which mandates that no road repair tender below Rs 50 crore be issued by the Mandi Board. He said the move undermines small local contractors and opens the door to corruption and favoritism toward outsiders. MSID:: 123043831 413 |
