Rangers Champions League qualifying dates against Panathinaikos confirmed as Russell Martin gears for baptism of fire
Gers face a tricky assignment in their bid to get amongst Europe's elite in the coming season
Rangers now know the lay of the land in their Champions League second round qualifier against Panathinaikos after UEFA officially confirmed the dates of the two-legged tie.
New boss Russell Martin has been given a tough task in his first competitive games as Gers boss when his side take on the Greek giants next month.
Rangers haven't reached the group stages - which were revamped into a league format last year - of the competition since the 2021/22 campaign under Gio van Bronckhorst but have decent history against Panathinaikos after dumping them out of the UEFA Cup during their epic run to the final in 2008.
And Gers fans will pack out Ibrox for the first leg clash, which will take place on Tuesday, July 22 with a BST kick-off time of 7.45pm.
The return fixture at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium will be held eight days later on Wednesday, July 30 at a slightly earlier UK time of 7pm.
The winner over the two legs will progress to the third qualifying round of the Champions League which will take place over two weeks on August 5/6 and 11/12.
Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell are ramping up their attempts to improve the playing squad ahead of the crunch ties next month.
Bournemouth full-back Max Aarons is poised to complete a loan switch to Ibrox, while Leicester City centre-back Conor Coady remains a key target.
New options up front also remain high on the agenda, and while Westerlo frontman Matija Frigan recently expressed his excitement at the potential move to Rangers, a swoop for Israeli striker Dor Turgeman is now looking increasingly unlikely.
Martin is also bracing himself for interest in some of his top men, with midfielder Nicolas Raskin a target for Premier League side Wolves.
The Belgium international is also said to be on Aston Villa's radar as well as several clubs abroad.

Lawrence Shankland to LEAVE Hearts as contract talks ‘break down' after club's final offer
Derek McInnes was hoping to hold onto him but time has run out EDIN AWAY Lawrence Shankland to LEAVE Hearts as contract talks 'break down' after club's final offer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LAWRENCE SHANKLAND is now all but certain to leave Hearts after final negotiations over a new contract broke down. The Jambos skipper didn't travel with the rest of the squad as they jetted out for their pre-season training camp in Spain. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Lawrence Shankland's time at Hearts looks to be up Credit: SNS But Tynecastle boss Derek McInnes had been growing hopeful that he would be able to call on the Scotland striker next season, with the club having offered him a three-year contract. However, after months of talks it fell short of what Shankland wanted and according to the Daily Mail, there was only a minimal difference between the Edinburgh club's final offer and the previous deal that he'd already rejected. The Mail's report claims that Shankland was open to staying at Hearts but only for the right price, and ultimately concluded that chief executive Andrew McKinlay didn't share his ambitions. McInnes has already added striker Claudio Braga this summer, and Elton Kabangu's loan from Union Saint Gilloise was made permanent. But the former Kilmarnock manager will demand the search for another number nine is ramped up now that it looks like Shankland is quitting the capital after three years. The 29-year-old hit 67 goals during his time in Maroon, playing in 136 games across all competitions. He has been linked with a move to West Brom and mentions of Rangers have never gone away, both of whom would benefit from being able to snap him up as a free agent. We told you earlier this month that Hearts had made an offer for 19-year-old Nigerian striker Uchenna Ogundu, with a view to him helping to void the void left by Shankland departing. But reports suggest he is wanted by a number of clubs across Europe, both on the continent and in the UK. McInnes had previously said on Shankland: "I really feel Lawrence as part of a strong Hearts team can elevate himself. Rangers transfer special including Coady latest, why Turgeman move could be off & why Shankland's a no-brainer "I think he's capable of scoring 25-30 goals a season in the right team and used in the right way. "We can offer security. We can offer building a team and being part of a team that's trying to be successful." Ross Doohan reveals Kieran Tierney Celtic transfer message
As the left-back put it himself, there was an air of 'getting the band back together' when Ross Doohan re-joined Celtic this week. The goalkeeper, 27, put pen to paper on a three-year deal this week as he sealed a return to his boyhood club. The goalkeeper was a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Aberdeen, where he signed after a spell south of the border. The recent full Scotland debutant – who came to Steve Clarke's rescue after injuries suffered by Angus Gunn and Robby McCrorie in the international double-header at the start of the month – will compete alongside Viljami Sinisalo to be back-up to the undisputed Celtic first-choice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. With Scott Bain away, Doohan essentially takes his place in the squad, helping with the club's home-grown quota for the Champions League. Doohan knows Tierney's return from Arsenal is the headline news among supporters. But he's determined to prove his worth after coming back to the club he loves following three years away from Celtic Park. 'I've had a few conversations with him, but I worked under him before, so he knows what he's getting from me and I'm looking forward to working under him again because he's a top, top manager,' the keeper explained before addressing his relationship with Tierney. 'KT was a year older than me growing up in the youth teams, but we obviously played together a lot. 'You obviously know the type of player KT is, what he's like and the type of person he's like, so it's another great addition to the squad. 'I spoke to him when I went away on Scotland duty, so we were both there together when I got the late call. 'He was there chatting, but I've known KT for years now, so I was just looking forward to getting back to it. I think he said to me when I saw him it was about getting the band back together. 'He said that to me when I saw him so it's obviously great coming back and then me and him in the same situation, leaving a few years then later both coming back. 'We've always had a good relationship. We spoke a lot, although, in the last few years, maybe not as much. But every time we see each other, we chat away and always had the conversation. 'I've got the relationship with Tony [Ralston} because he was in the same youth squad as me from 13, so we went right through it together. We're pretty close. 'One of my loan spells was at Ayr, so me and Luke [McCowan] played together for quite a bit. We played together for two seasons, so I still keep in contact with him, so it's good to come back to a good few familiar faces.' Doohan never managed to play a senior game for Celtic alongside Tierney, so, he is hoping to do so in his second spell at the club. They featured heavily in the Under-17s, 19s and 20s during their academy days. If he's to do so, the chances are he'll require either, a loss or form from Schmeichel, or to take advantage of someone else's misfortune on the injury front. Doohan was part of a tight-knit goalkeeper network at Lennoxtown before. He would have worked closely with Fraser Forster, Joe Hart and Craig Gordon in the past. So, he's fully aware of the standards set within the squad he's arriving into. He said: 'I'm buzzing about working with him because you've seen the level Kasper's played at. 'To go in and train day in, day out with him, can only put myself in good stead and to try and pick up wee traits of his that could maybe benefit my game and put me, maybe step me on and make me that bit better. It's the same with working with Vil. 'Obviously he came in and played a few games towards the end of last season. You've seen the level he's at, but I feel like any place I go, the goalkeepers I work with, I just try and pick up bits and pieces from them and add them into my game. 'I'm just buzzing about working with Woodsy [Stevie Woods] because they're top goalie coaches and even with Colin Meldrum as well, the youth goalie coach that I had here. I just can't wait to get going. 'Kasper's all-round game is great. The calmness he's got with it. But like you said, with the ball at his feet, he's different level, I think. 'So I'll just try and pick up bits and pieces from every part of his game and try and implement it into mine if it can make me a better keeper. I'm looking forward to that.' Doohan signed permanently for Forest Green Rovers when he departed Celtic in 2022. Here, he played under Duncan Ferguson, during the former Scotland, Dundee United and Rangers striker's brief stint in charge. While it didn't go to plan for Ferguson, Doohan was grateful for the experience of working with him. 'Big Dunc is a great guy,' he added. 'The time at Forest Green, we didn't do too great, but you could see what he was like as a guy and that. He was brand new, so there's not too much complaints there working under him. 'He came in maybe two weeks after I joined. Everyone's got their reputation, but you only get to see it at face value when you actually meet them. 'The times I spoke to him, he was brand new. Obviously, I was down there, a bit away from home, but he always helped and asked if I was all right, chatted away. I've not got a bad word to say about him. 'There were a few Scottish people there. There was a wee group of us there, so you could say that as well. When he came in, working under him, it was an experience. 'It was good and something that's landed me in good stead coming through. I feel every club I've been at, every experience I've had, has led me to where I am now. I wouldn't change anything for the world.'

The Max Aarons baptism of fire Rangers star survived as Norwich ally reveals new man can handle the heat
Rangers' latest signing survived being thrown into Norwich's fiercest fixture as a rookie 18-year-old for his league debut Max Aarons was handed a Norwich baptism of fire in the derby jokingly dubbed the Old Farm. The then 18-year-old refused to be cowed by Ipswich fans in that league debut at Portman Road seven years ago. But the Rangers new boy will soon discover handling the beast that is the Old Firm is a country mile from that first taste of footballing rivalry. Few would argue the intensity of the East Anglia derby falls short of the fiery furnace of Glasgow's bitter contest. But still, for a young Canary hoping to take flight there was hardly a bigger or more intimidating fixture to start out than that 1-1 draw in enemy territory. Rather than have his wings clipped, the full-back rose to the challenge. So much so that Daniel Farke simply couldn't take him back out the team. Aarons went on to make 41 league appearances that season as Norwich stormed to the Championship title. And for ex-Carrow Road team mate Michael McGovern that day in Ipswich was all the proof he needed that Aarons was the real deal. The former Celtic goalkeeper knows few footballing rivalries compare to what lies in store for Russell Martin's first signing. But he has no doubt Aarons is built for the challenge. McGovern, who spent seven years at Norwich, said: 'I know Max really well, we used to sit beside each other in the changing room. 'I played in his debut in a cup game against Stevenage and then a few weeks later he made his league debut away to Ipswich Town which is obviously a huge rivalry, the biggest game for Norwich fans. 'He was put straight in from the start, he was only 18, but he came in for that East Anglian derby and was excellent. 'He handled the occasion superbly well. It's not quite on the Old Firm level but for an 18-year-old lad to make their debut in that environment it was a huge test. 'Daniel Farke clearly trusted him and the thing about Max is he has a really good temperament. Even back then. 'So as much as it is difficult to play for a club like Rangers and be in the Glasgow goldfish bowl, Max will be fine because he has a really good head on his shoulders. 'He isn't fazed by anything really. Remember he has now played in big games in the Premier League. He's played away at Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs many times. He was young and that would have been a real learning curve. 'Not just that but he handled the pressure of two separate title wins in the Championship which is a really competitive league. 'So I'm sure he will handle Rangers and Scottish football. He will relish the challenge. 'Max is a top player with so much potential till to do well at Ibrox. He has played a lot of games at a young age. He's also had a taste of playing in Spain so I think Rangers are getting a really good player.' Aarons arrived on a season-long loan deal from Bournemouth on Wednesday - and immediately set his sights on kick starting his career that stalled last season with just two starts for the Cherries and five appearances for Valencia in a La Liga loan stint. The 25-year-old will go head-to-head with skipper James Tavernier for the right back spot at Ibrox. And McGovern reckons there's no way Aarons is moving north to play second fiddle. He said: 'That's up to Russell Martin who starts in each position! 'I don't know where Max will fit in. Naturally he is a right back but he can also play on the left. 'But I imagine he will be going in there to play. 'He's not going to want to go somewhere and not play because he didn't play too much at Bournemouth last season or on loan at Valencia. 'He just needs regular games. I'm pretty sure if he gets that you will see a player who was quoted as a £20m player not so long ago. 'Max is really comfortable on the ball. He's a good one v one defender and really good going forward. He's intelligent and knows the game. 'He just needs regular football. He has a good chance of getting that at Rangers. I think he will be an asset for them this season.' That £20m valuation comes from reported Manchester United interest in Aarons three years ago while the player was at his peak with Norwich. The Canaries refused to cash in and by the time he moved on in 2023 - with just a year left on his contract - they had to settle for a £7m from Bournemouth. Now he's preparing for a crack at Scottish football after becoming the first signing of the Martin era. And his first competitive action could come in the form of a European debut in the Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos next month. McGovern said: 'Max is a Premier League quality player. It's a shame there's no option to buy for Rangers. Bournemouth are probably looking at Max as an asset who can make them a good few quid in the future. 'He just needs games and a bit of love. He's not had too many games the last year or so. But he will hopefully get that platform with Rangers.'
