Ross Doohan reveals Kieran Tierney Celtic transfer message
As the left-back put it himself, there was an air of 'getting the band back together' when Ross Doohan re-joined Celtic this week.
The goalkeeper, 27, put pen to paper on a three-year deal this week as he sealed a return to his boyhood club.
The goalkeeper was a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Aberdeen, where he signed after a spell south of the border.
The recent full Scotland debutant – who came to Steve Clarke's rescue after injuries suffered by Angus Gunn and Robby McCrorie in the international double-header at the start of the month – will compete alongside Viljami Sinisalo to be back-up to the undisputed Celtic first-choice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
With Scott Bain away, Doohan essentially takes his place in the squad, helping with the club's home-grown quota for the Champions League.
Doohan knows Tierney's return from Arsenal is the headline news among supporters. But he's determined to prove his worth after coming back to the club he loves following three years away from Celtic Park.
'I've had a few conversations with him, but I worked under him before, so he knows what he's getting from me and I'm looking forward to working under him again because he's a top, top manager,' the keeper explained before addressing his relationship with Tierney.
'KT was a year older than me growing up in the youth teams, but we obviously played together a lot.
'You obviously know the type of player KT is, what he's like and the type of person he's like, so it's another great addition to the squad.
'I spoke to him when I went away on Scotland duty, so we were both there together when I got the late call.
'He was there chatting, but I've known KT for years now, so I was just looking forward to getting back to it. I think he said to me when I saw him it was about getting the band back together.
'He said that to me when I saw him so it's obviously great coming back and then me and him in the same situation, leaving a few years then later both coming back.
'We've always had a good relationship. We spoke a lot, although, in the last few years, maybe not as much. But every time we see each other, we chat away and always had the conversation.
'I've got the relationship with Tony [Ralston} because he was in the same youth squad as me from 13, so we went right through it together. We're pretty close.
'One of my loan spells was at Ayr, so me and Luke [McCowan] played together for quite a bit. We played together for two seasons, so I still keep in contact with him, so it's good to come back to a good few familiar faces.'
Doohan never managed to play a senior game for Celtic alongside Tierney, so, he is hoping to do so in his second spell at the club. They featured heavily in the Under-17s, 19s and 20s during their academy days.
If he's to do so, the chances are he'll require either, a loss or form from Schmeichel, or to take advantage of someone else's misfortune on the injury front.
Doohan was part of a tight-knit goalkeeper network at Lennoxtown before. He would have worked closely with Fraser Forster, Joe Hart and Craig Gordon in the past. So, he's fully aware of the standards set within the squad he's arriving into.
He said: 'I'm buzzing about working with him because you've seen the level Kasper's played at.
'To go in and train day in, day out with him, can only put myself in good stead and to try and pick up wee traits of his that could maybe benefit my game and put me, maybe step me on and make me that bit better. It's the same with working with Vil.
'Obviously he came in and played a few games towards the end of last season. You've seen the level he's at, but I feel like any place I go, the goalkeepers I work with, I just try and pick up bits and pieces from them and add them into my game.
'I'm just buzzing about working with Woodsy [Stevie Woods] because they're top goalie coaches and even with Colin Meldrum as well, the youth goalie coach that I had here. I just can't wait to get going.
'Kasper's all-round game is great. The calmness he's got with it. But like you said, with the ball at his feet, he's different level, I think.
'So I'll just try and pick up bits and pieces from every part of his game and try and implement it into mine if it can make me a better keeper. I'm looking forward to that.'
Doohan signed permanently for Forest Green Rovers when he departed Celtic in 2022. Here, he played under Duncan Ferguson, during the former Scotland, Dundee United and Rangers striker's brief stint in charge.
While it didn't go to plan for Ferguson, Doohan was grateful for the experience of working with him.
'Big Dunc is a great guy,' he added. 'The time at Forest Green, we didn't do too great, but you could see what he was like as a guy and that. He was brand new, so there's not too much complaints there working under him.
'He came in maybe two weeks after I joined. Everyone's got their reputation, but you only get to see it at face value when you actually meet them.
'The times I spoke to him, he was brand new. Obviously, I was down there, a bit away from home, but he always helped and asked if I was all right, chatted away. I've not got a bad word to say about him.
'There were a few Scottish people there. There was a wee group of us there, so you could say that as well. When he came in, working under him, it was an experience.
'It was good and something that's landed me in good stead coming through. I feel every club I've been at, every experience I've had, has led me to where I am now. I wouldn't change anything for the world.'

Joao Pedro chooses next club after Chelsea and Newcastle transfer offers
Brighton forward Joao Pedro has reportedly chosen his next club after receiving transfer offers from Chelsea and Newcastle United. Pedro has enjoyed two productive seasons on the south coast, scoring 30 goals in all competitions. The 23-year-old has become a key player for Brighton since being signed from Championship side Watford in 2023. Pedro's form has caught the eye of several clubs, with Chelsea and Newcastle already submitting offers to Brighton. Brighton rejected a £50m bid from Newcastle last week before rebuffing a £58m proposal from Chelsea on Saturday. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Talks between the clubs are still ongoing with Brighton demanding at least £60m to sell the Brazil international. Newcastle's interest is long-standing but Pedro is currently 'leaning towards a move to Chelsea', according to the Daily Mail. Both Chelsea and Newcastle can offer Pedro Champions League football after they finished fourth and fifth respectively last season. One reason Pedro could be tempted to reject Newcastle in favour of Chelsea is the fact he wants to remain a first-choice striker. There is little chance of the Brazilian displacing one of the best strikers in the world in Alexander Isak, unless of course he leaves St James' Park this summer. A host of clubs are admirers of Isak but he is expected to stay put, with Newcastle valuing him at over £125m. Chelsea have already signed one striker this summer after Liam Delap completed a £30m deal from Ipswich Town. But Pedro could fancy his chances of replacing Delap and Nicolas Jackson in the Chelsea team given the former's inexperience and the latter's underwhelming 2024-25 campaign. Ex-Premier League and Germany midfielder Didi Hamann understands Newcastle's interest in Pedro. 'Joao Pedro would be a smart signing for Newcastle, but it just depends on if he is happy playing back-up, which is a big if,' he said earlier this month. More Trending 'I think he's a very capable player and has done really well for Brighton, but he might see Newcastle and think that eventually he could replace Alexander Isak having already won the fans over by scoring off the bench or whenever he gets his chances. 'If they don't challenge for the Premier League or Champions League next season then Isak might want to leave. 'But Newcastle do need to kick on so it would be a good signing, they need to consolidate after winning a trophy and getting back into the Champions League. 'They need to pick things up because in the Premier League, overall, it was a bit disappointing at times last season.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. 'What's not to get excited about?' - your views on 'real deal' Nygren
We asked you for your views after Benjamin Nygren signed a five-year deal with what some of you said:Gordy: A good signing and hopefully just the start - we need cover all over the pitch. Centre back, right and left-back cover is essential and a goal-scoring centre forward, while holding onto to what we have, unless a massive offer comes in that will help buy other players. We need to show more ambition in the transfer market this season to be successful at home and in Nygren scored a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in Europe, and is obviously a very good What's not to get excited about? Another Scandinavian with a clear determination to advance his career and full of positivity. I've seen him play for Sweden and he has bags of energy and drive. Almost looks like he's a mini Daizen, but let's not burden the boy with too much The signing of Nygren could turn out to be a very shrewd piece of business. He appears to be a player on an upward path and with the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, we can hopefully continue his progression. If we can get two/three good seasons out of him then we could end up with a £30m+ asset. Either way it certainly looks like £1.5m well Nygren looks like the real deal. It's difficult to make one's mind up based on highlight reels, right enough. He is saying the right things in the media, regarding his winning mentality, his experience and what he thinks will be expected of him while wearing the hoops. I just hope he has the longevity to do it season after season, on a cold wet Wednesday night in the north east of Scotland!

Imminent Rangers transfer ridiculed as Hotline spots the real answer staring Russell Martin in the face
The calculators are out on the Hotline but is the free transfer option one Rangers should be pursuing? Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, thinks so. He said: "It's unlikely Rangers will get the money wanted for Hamza lgamane, he'll stay. With Dessers it's been a drawn-out affair for that extra £1m, he also may stay. So any point spending £5m on a risky untried Dor Turgeman who may or may not be any good? " Russell Martin wants to wake up to himself and get Lawrence Shankland for nothing, it's staring him in the face. He's fit and ready for European and SPFL games. Most punters say it's common sense, and last chance saloon for Martin to get him." Charles Maxwell reckons former head of recruitment Nils Koppen is due some credit for his role in bringing Igamane to Ibrox in the first place. He said: "Going by the figures flying around for Igamane, it's beginning to look like blue chip holdings sold the golden goose just as it was starting to lay an egg or two. "Perhaps now the poorly treated and recently punted Nils Koppen will get the credit he deserves." Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: "Rangers and their fans need to stop dreaming. I was scoffed at by Chris Lowe and co for mocking Rangers £25m valuation of Igamane and now it seems that has dropped to a pitiful £13m and the likes of Lille are walking away laughing. "Celtic get big money deals for our players because we are champions and play at a much higher level in Europe so get used to it. " Rangers have been heavily linked with Brighton teenager Zebedee Lawson but Richard Wharton, Carlisle, said: "Who is this Zebedee who has turned down Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Dortmund to sign on at Govan? Oh yes he's from the magic roundabout!" Across the city Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, has two exits he'd like to see at Celtic. He said: "So fed up with the same crap coming out of Parkhead every transfer window. Forget buying rubbish. Just get proper professional coaches in and bring through the talent at Lennoxtown. "What we have now is coach John Kennedy who wanders about the training ground with a notepad and fellow hanger-on Gavin Strachan who does the same only with his trusty laptop. Get this pair out or Celtic will never go forward." Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: "It's reported that Brenford are the latest club to be linked with Daizan Maeda but I think he will have second thoughts regarding moving at this stage of his career when seeing how Matt O'Riley and Kyogo's moves turned out. "Brentford are hardly a Bayern and I can see him moving to a top European side in the future but not at this moment in time." And a quote from Jim Goodwin after signing defender Bert Esselink has caught Tim Gibbens' attention. He said: "Are Dundee United now being managed by an algorithm? "Jim Goodwin announced the signing of Bert Esselink by saying that 'the statistical data reinforces his intelligence when selecting a progressive passing option'. Can you imagine the likes of Jock Stein or Brian Clough ever saying that?"
