Couple Go to Shelter Looking for a Chihuahua—Realize 'Dog Picks the Family'

A family who came to an animal rescue in search of a Chihuahua had a change of heart thanks to the efforts of a precocious shelter puppy named Fang.
Shelter dogs have a small window of time in which to make an impression on a visitor. One 2014 study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science estimated that shelter visitors interacted with just one pet per visit and that these interactions lasted an average of just eight minutes.
Fang was different though. When his future family came to the Laurie P. Andrews Adoption Center in Edinburg, Texas, it took a matter of seconds for the pup to catch their attention.
"Fang came in as a stray with his mama and eight siblings" Aileen Betancourt, an adoption specialist at the nonprofit shelter, told Newsweek. "Fang's mom gave birth outside the shelter, and Animal Control picked up the whole litter when he was just days old. He grew up here until his forever family walked in."
There was something special about Fang's adoption though. His family had come with the intention of taking home an entirely different breed of dog.
"They initially came in looking to adopt a small-breed Chihuahua and didn't even realize we were an adoption center," Betancourt said.
In truth, finding a Chihuahua at the adoption center was a long shot. "Since most of our dogs are strays, small breeds are rare here," Betancourt added.
Some visitors might have simply gone home at that point. However, Fang had other ideas. "The moment they saw Fang in his kennel, they felt something special," Betancourt said. "After taking him out for an interaction, they knew he was the one."
It was a reminder to Betancourt of something she has seen time-and-time again—"sometimes the dog picks the family."

Betancourt chronicled this old adage and Fang's heartwarming journey in a video posted to her TikTok account @lifesavingpixie.
She hopes it will inspire others to take a chance on dogs like Fang if they feel a connection. "I believe many adoptions happen just like that," she said. "More often than not, it's the dog that chooses the person...they're the ones who get adopted."
Though it's still early days, Betancourt is pleased to report that Fang is settling in well with his new family and has already undergone one major change since his shelter days. "Now that he's found his forever home, his new family renamed him Bruno, and it suits him perfectly," she said. "He's still just a big baby, only about 4 and a half months old."
The pup's story is a happy one and a reminder of the kind of unexpected joy that can be found simply by visiting your local animal shelter.
As Betancourt says: "Sometimes people come in just to visit or look around, and they end up leaving with a furry friend they didn't expect to fall in love with."

Senior Shelter Dog To Be Euthanized the Next Day—One Thing Changed His Fate
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. A senior shelter dog surrendered by his family in heartbreaking circumstances was 24 hours away from being euthanized until a dramatic late intervention. The reasons why Moose the 12-year-old dachshund mix was surrendered to Downey Animal Shelter, in Los Angeles, California, are something of a mystery. "We don't know why Moose's family surrendered him," Nicole Rechtszaid told Newsweek. "He seems to have nubbed-down teeth, which we suspect means he may have had to eat rocks to fill his belly. He has severe gum disease and neglected teeth and alopecia." However, as a seasoned volunteer and animal rescue advocate based in Los Angeles, Rechtszaid has seen surrenders like Moose before. "While it [Moose's surrender] may be because of the cost [of his treatment], I have witnessed people firsthand surrender dogs due to age, claiming they're no longer fun and playing," she said. Rechtszaid also knew Moose was facing a race against time to get adopted. "Downey Animal Shelter is frequently overcapacity, meaning dogs may get 2-4 weeks maximum before being euthanized. Moose was surrendered on April 25 and we picked him up on May 27," she said. "Dogs will get notices sent out to rescues as pleas for them to rescue and Moose had already had three notices sent out with no luck. No public interest." Moose the 12-year-old rescue dog was less than 24 hours away from being euthanized. Moose the 12-year-old rescue dog was less than 24 hours away from being euthanized. TikTok/nicoleandthedogs That was when Rechtszaid intervened. Rechtszaid grew up with animals and volunteered as a teenager at a local animal rescue in Florida. "I adopted my own dog Beau as a college student at the University of Florida during my senior year," she said. "Since then, he's inspired me to do all that I can to help animals. He came from a hoarding case and was only a few months old, yet he had a slew of health issues." After moving to California, Rechtszaid began fostering rescue dogs. It was an eye-opening experience. "I learned about the extreme shelter crisis and how often dogs are being taken to these open intake, high kill shelters," Rechtszaid said. Eager to help some of these dogs find homes, Rechtszaid began visiting shelters and filming videos of the canine residents. She posted the footage to TikTok and Instagram under the handle @nicoleandthedogs, helping many of those dogs who would have otherwise gone unnoticed find forever homes or foster carers. That's what led her to Moose. "My friend Amanda sent me a video of Moose and said she really wanted to help him," Rechtszaid said. "She needed support since she had two fosters in her care. One was going to leave on transport in two weeks to his home, so she could take Moose in as a foster afterwards." They knew how difficult it can be for older dogs to get adopted. A 2021 study published in the journal Animals identified some of the most common characteristics of long-term shelter dogs. Researchers concluded that long-term shelter dogs were more often of older age, male, of large size, neutered, and of a "dangerous breed." Moose may not have fit all of those categories but his age certainly counted against him, making adoption less likely. Rechtszaid agreed to take Moose in, with a view to raising the funds to get him the treatment needed. She also arranged for some additional foster support while she was out of town and Amanda was at capacity. Amanda was the one who brought Moose home from the shelter and just in the nick of time. "A volunteer said he was set for euthanasia the next morning, so we got him on what appeared to be his last day," Rechtszaid said. Rechtszaid posted a video to TikTok showing the newly-rescued Moose excitedly zooming around her apartment. Though it's only been a short time, Moose's true personality has begun to come out. "Moose is a very goofy boy who likes to lay on his back and twist around, asking for belly rubs," Rechtszaid said. "He's a couch potato and will never object to a day in bed. He also does enjoy exploring and each day he is getting stronger now that he has a proper diet." The challenge now is to find him a forever home to enjoy his senior years in. "Moose has separation anxiety, so his ideal home is a person who works from home, is retired, or stays at home," Rechtszaid said. "He will need someone who can be patient with an older dog and not push him too hard, giving him ramps for the couch and bed given his dachshund body shape." She added: "He deserves lots of affection in his golden years, so he will want someone who snuggles him as much as possible."

Woman Steps Into New House With Labrador—Minutes Later Disaster Strikes
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman's excitement over her new home quickly turned sour after a sudden accident. In a TikTok video, the woman took a clip of her Labrador retriever, Bear, unexpectedly breaking a glass window at his height within moments of their arrival. The viral footage, receiving over 780,000 likes, captured the immediate aftermath of the incident, leaving viewers stunned and concerned. The video opens with the woman's excited voice as she steps into the new house: "Yay, we got a new house," she said. But her joyful tone shifts to panic seconds later. "My dog just ran straight into the glass window and has smashed it … oh my God, I literally don't know what to do." The incident prompted an outpouring of concern and advice from TikTok users regarding the type of glass in the window. Many commenters wrote that the glass appeared to be unusually fragile for a ground-level or door-adjacent pane. One user posted: "I work for a window company and that is actually against code! Glass that is floor level or beside a door needs to be tempered and definitely shouldn't have broken like that. I'd inquire about all of the glass if I were you." "Wait, is that single pane glass?" another person wrote. "I haven't seen that in houses since I was a child. Do you guys not do triple glazing there?" The safety implications were a major concern for others: "Seriously, that was NOT the right glass in that window! I'm so glad your dog or potentially a child wasn't hurt! no security and unsafe!" Thankfully, an update video provided good news about Bear's well-being. Stock photo: A Labrador retriever looks outside from a window. Stock photo: A Labrador retriever looks outside from a window."Basically, my dog went headfirst straight through a window in our new house," she said. "As you can see, he's got a head of a bull. He's absolutely fine, his head was fine, he didn't have any injuries … and his paws are absolutely fine, thankfully no glass or anything under there as well." The owner added: "So, really pleased that he was left unharmed, just a little bit shaken up—but he's being his absolute self today." She said that the broken glass has since been replaced: "We've put in safety glass that looks exactly the same, but obviously it's thicker," the owner added. While the new safety glass provides a much-needed upgrade, she said, she also hopes that Bear learned his lesson—and catches on to the doggy door method instead.
