Al Ahli Messi confirmed: Saudi Pro League side open talks with Lionel Messi for Inter Miami move from MLS

Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli have reportedly opened talks with Lionel Messi's representatives in a bid to bring the Argentine forward to the Saudi Pro League once his current deal with Inter Miami expires at the end of the year.
The 38-year-old joined Major League Soccer in the summer of 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, turning down an earlier offer from Saudi Arabia.
Despite that initial rejection, interest from the Gulf nation has remained persistent. Al-Ahli, who recently won the Asian Champions League, are said to be renewing efforts to land the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, French outlet L'Équipe has reported.
While financial terms of the potential move remain undisclosed, Saudi officials are reportedly prepared to offer a significant package.
The country, set to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034, is continuing its campaign to attract global football icons to boost the profile of its domestic league.
Inter Miami, meanwhile, are understood to be keen to extend Messi's stay following his impactful stint in the MLS. The club's ownership and fan base see Messi as central to their ongoing sporting and commercial growth, though they now face renewed competition.
Veteran sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reported last week that Inter Miami are set to begin talks over a new contract for Messi soon.
The development comes weeks after Inter Miami were eliminated from the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, losing to Messi's former side Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.
Despite the setback, Messi's performances have remained a draw for fans and sponsors alike, keeping his future a topic of international interest.
Both Messi's camp and representatives of Al-Ahli have yet to comment publicly on the negotiations.
With his contract set to expire in December, the coming months could prove decisive in determining where the world champion concludes the twilight of his career.

King Charles hosts Macron in first European state visit since Brexit

LONDON: Britain's King Charles will welcome French President Emmanuel Macron to Windsor Castle on Tuesday for the first state visit by a European leader since Brexit in a trip aimed at celebrating the return of closer political ties between the countries. The grand ceremonial event will be the first for Macron, who enjoys a good personal relationship with the king. The last state visit to Britain by a French president was in 2008, when Nicolas Sarkozy was a guest of the late Queen Elizabeth. Britain has been trying to reset ties with European allies since Prime Minister Keir Starmer was elected last year. The talks this week will focus on a range of issues, including how to stop people-smuggling and improving economic and defence ties at a time when the United States is retrenching from its traditional role as a defender of European security. Although there have been tensions over the shape of post-Brexit ties and how to stop asylum seekers from crossing the Channel in small boats, Britain and France have been working closely together to create a planned military force to support Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. Sebastien Maillard, an associate fellow at London's Chatham House think tank, said the two sides were seeking to repair some of the damage done by the Brexit negotiations in the run up to Britain leaving the EU in 2020, 'when France was more or less playing the bad cop'. While Macron's three-day visit is filled with meetings about economic issues and foreign affairs, the first day of the visit is largely focused on pageantry, and heavy in symbolism. Prince William and his wife Kate will greet Macron and his wife Brigitte at a military airport in London and will accompany them to Windsor where they will be officially welcomed by the king and Queen Camilla, and gun salutes. They will then travel in a carriage procession through Windsor's streets, attend a military parade and then have lunch with the royal family at the castle. On Tuesday afternoon, Macron will travel back to London to speak to lawmakers in the parliament. The day will end with a state dinner at Windsor Castle, including speeches by the king and Macron in front of about 150 guests. Migrants' return deal The following day Starmer will host Macron at Downing Street where they will discuss how to stop the flow of tens of thousands of asylum seekers across the Channel. British officials are hoping that Macron will agree to a pilot of an asylum seekers' returns deal. King Charles expresses love for 'strong and free' Canada This would involve Britain deporting one asylum seeker to France in exchange for another with a legitimate case to be in Britain, thereby disrupting the business model of people-smuggling gangs. A record number of asylum seekers have arrived in Britain on small boats from France in the first six months of this year. Starmer, trailing behind Nigel Farage's insurgent, right-wing Reform UK party in the polls, is under pressure to come up with a solution. France has previously refused to sign up to such an agreement, saying Britain should negotiate an arrangement with all the EU countries. On Thursday, Starmer and Macron will host a UK-France summit to discuss other bilateral issues and how to support Ukraine. The two could also announce further cooperation on nuclear investment, such as at Sizewell C. Macron's visit is a sign of a new era in relations. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in his memoirs published last year that Macron wanted to punish Britain after it voted to leave the EU in 2016. Britain and France in recent years have publicly clashed over fishing rights and a submarine alliance that united Britain, Australia and the United States, but left France on the sidelines.

Islamabad, Baghdad to come in twin-city relationship

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad and Baghdad are set to enhance bilateral cooperation under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreed between the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq. The agreement was reached during a meeting between CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa and Iraqi Head of Mission Abdul Qadir Sulaiman Al-Humaeri. Held at CDA Headquarters, the meeting focused on fostering bilateral cooperation, with special emphasis on strengthening municipal-level ties. Both sides agreed to formally sign a MoU to establish the twin-city relationship. This initiative aims to promote cultural exchange, people-to-people linkages, and collaboration in urban development. Al-Humaeri praised the efforts led by Randhawa to enhance Islamabad's development, beauty, and environmental sustainability. He expressed strong interest in boosting economic, cultural, and tourism ties between the two countries, and emphasised Iraq's readiness to actively engage in the implementation of joint initiatives with CDA. The proposed MoU will pave the way for collaboration in several sectors including preservation of cultural heritage, urban planning, infrastructure enhancement, beautification of public spaces, and sustainable development. It is expected to strengthen diplomatic and municipal cooperation between the capitals of both nations. During the meeting, Randhawa briefed the Iraqi envoy about the modernisation and uplift of the Diplomatic Enclave under the directions of Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. He stated that renowned landscape experts and architects are being engaged to transform the Enclave in line with international standards, making it a secure and vibrant hub for diplomatic missions and cultural activities. Al-Humaeri appreciated this initiative and expressed Iraq's support. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Norway reach Euro 2025 quarter-finals

Norway are the first team to reach the Women's Euro 2025 quarter-finals after beating Finland 2-1 on Sunday and Switzerland's 2-0 win over eliminated Iceland. Caroline Graham Hansen snatched the three points in Sion with a mishit cross six minutes before the end to give Norway a perfect six points from their two Group A fixtures. And hosts Switzerland beating Iceland ensured that Gemma Grainger's Norway have won the group with a match to spare, setting up a last-eight clash with the the team that finishes second in Group B. "We need to get better at some things, but the best thing is that we will keep getting better. If you can get better while winning games, that's the ideal formula," said Grainger. Norway looked set to dominate when Eva Nystrom diverted Hansen's low cross into her own net, and they were unlucky not be two ahead midway through the first half after striking the woodwork twice in the space of a minute. First, Ingrid Engen nodded Vilde Boe Risa's probing cross onto the post in the 24th minute. Then, Finland goalkeeper Anna Koivunen tipped an inswinging corner onto the upright. Koivunen pulled off two more superb stops four minutes later, tipping away Hansen's low drive before charging out to deny Ada Hegerberg just as it looked like the former Ballon d'Or winner was certain to net from close range. Koivunen's goalkeeping heroics were rewarded in the 32nd minute when Oona Sevenius kept her head on the edge of the penalty box to guide home a superb leveller. Finland suddenly looked far more likely to take the points, with Eveliina Summanen denied a brilliant goal when Norway goalkeeper Cecilie Fiskerstrand tipped a shot onto the post. Hansen seemed to have missed her chance to win the match for Norway in the 82nd minute when she blasted over from point-blank range. She made up moments later when she skipped past two Finnish defenders, burst into the box, evaded two more players and lofted the ball in off the post. Swiss eye quarters The Swiss sit second, three points behind Norway, after Geraldine Reuteler and Alayah Pilgrim delighted a passionate home crowd at the Wankdorf Stadium. Pia Sundhage's team need to avoid defeat against Finland on Thursday to reach the knockout stage of the Euros for first time. "I'm very proud of the team because we changed at half-time, in the second half we changed the system a little bit and I think they did great," Sundhage told Swiss broadcaster RSI. "Now? let's take the next step and see how it goes." Eintracht Frankfurt forward Reuteler opened the scoring with a smart finish at the end of a fine passing move in the 76th minute, finally breaking the deadlock of a contest in which both teams struck the woodwork. And in the final minute Pilgrim put Switzerland in second place above Finland on goal difference with a wildly deflected effort from just outside the area. Defeat for Iceland left them on zero points and without any chance of reaching the next round as they have an inferior head-to-head record with both the Swiss and Finland ahead of their final fixture with Norway.
