Sabah not ready to bid for oil block, says Masidi

By: Abbey Junior Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah did not participate in bidding for the Mutiara Cluster oil block as its state-owned firms, SMJ Energy and Sabah International Petroleum (SIP), lack the capital and expertise for large-scale exploration, said Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He told the State Assembly that the Mutiara PSC, recently awarded to Dialog Group Berhad, was part of an international bid and still in the exploration stage. Masidi assured that Sabah's interests remain protected under the Commercial Collaboration Agreement with Petronas, and hinted at future involvement by SMJ. In response to opposition leader Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal's criticism over Sabah's exclusion, Masidi said the government prefers 'quiet but consistent' efforts over rhetoric. Sabah to host agro event again after 30 years

TAWAU: This year's National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) celebration is especially significant as it will be held in Sabah for the first time in 30 years – the last time being in 1995. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the State has been chosen as the host of the event, which will take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from Aug 1 to 3, and is expected to be officiated by the Prime Minister. Advertisement 'This year marks the 50th anniversary of HPPNK with the theme 'Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi' (Our Strength Secures the Nation),' he said during a press conference after launching the Road To HPPNK @ Tawau event at Dataran Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), last Saturday. He said the two-day pre-event in Tawau is expected to attract some 20,000 visitors, generate an estimated RM100,000 in transactions, and feature seven exhibition booths, 12 Agro Madani sales stalls and 40 entrepreneur booths. Arthur said that the event serves as a platform to bring the government closer to Sabah's agro community – especially farmers, breeders, and fishermen who are crucial to ensuring national food security. Tawau was chosen as the first stop for the roadshow due to its strong potential in agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors, as well as its strategic location, which allows easy access for visitors from Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak. In conjunction with the launch, Arthur presented eight mock cheques, including RM921,600 for the 2025 Fishermen's Cost of Living Allowance (ESHN) in Tawau; RM300,000 for B40 Fishermen Housing Aid in Tawau; RM50,000 for the Community Fishermen Facilities Development Grant in Kampung Tanjung Batu Laut, Tawau; RM34,000 for Fishing Equipment Assistance (Touch Point) in Tawau; and allocations under the Small and Medium Machinery Ownership Programme for PPK Kalabakan (RM26,882.80), PPK Tawau (RM9,289.70), PPK Kunak (RM39,294.80), and PPK Lahad Datu (RM9,954). Earlier, Arthur also flagged off the Road To HPPNK 2025 Motor Convoy, which will travel across several districts in Sabah including Sandakan, Nabawan, Keningau, Papar, and Kota Kinabalu before culminating at SICC. Explore rural tourism, businesses told

He said rural tourism is emerging as a key focus for Sabah and presents untapped opportunities for business involvement. Advertisement Many rural communities, he noted, have already taken the lead in developing community-based tourism, and further support from the private sector would help strengthen and expand these grassroots efforts. Joniston, who also chairs Sabah Tourism Board (STB), said increased business activity in rural areas would contribute to local income opportunities, support overall rural development, and enhance the quality as well as sustainability of existing tourism initiatives. He gave these remarks during a meeting with Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCI) members, led by its President Datuk Michael Lui, who also presented a token of appreciation to Joniston during the session (pic) . The meeting touched on various matters, including tourism recovery and the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector in supporting events and destination promotion. Michael thanked the Ministry and STB for promoting golf tourism and for the support given to KKCCI's golf event in May, while also commending their continued efforts to bring more tourists into Sabah, which he said has helped boost business confidence in Kota Kinabalu. He noted that the current momentum in tourism is encouraging, especially post-pandemic, and said local businesses are feeling the positive effects, with hopes for continued collaboration to attract both international and domestic tourists to Sabah. Kota Kinabalu: Petroleum exploration on Sabah's East Coast is gaining momentum as Petronas seeks bids from potential Production Sharing Contractors to share the opportunity and the risks. According to Petronas at the recent Sabah Oil, Gas & Energy Conference & Exhibition 2025, there is another Sabah East Coast prime oil and gas exploration block – named SB505 which is open for bidding under its Malaysia Bid Round (MBR) 2025, as part of its Sabah opportunities. Advertisement This SB505 block of 2,750sq km is near to the Mutiara Cluster which was awarded to the Dialog Group Berhad. The water depth of this block varies from 5 metres to 200 metres. The fiscal term is Shallow Water EPT. The EPT will replace the 1997 Standard Revenue Over Cost (R/C) PSC Terms for future shallow water exploration contracts.
