MLS All-Stars crush Liga MX despite Lionel Messi absence
Liga MX launched 21 shot attempts, but placed just seven on target in the 3-1 setback Wednesday at Q2 Stadium. The MLS All-Stars placed 7 of 13 attempts on target, including two second-half scores.
"It was a special week," MLS All-Stars coach Nico Estevez told reporters. "I think I've been in the country enough to value what this event means. ... This is special. It's a unique event.
"Not everyone can come enjoy this thing. I'm honored and fortunate to coach the MLS All-Stars."
Philip Zinckernagel, Diego Rossi and Denis Bouanga logged assists for the MLS All-Stars, who played without Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Elias Montiel assisted Gilberto Mora for Liga MX's lone score.
"It was my first time in the All-Star Game," Baribo said on the Apple TV broadcast. "I scored and we won, MVP, it's the best feeling. Great night."
The win helped the MLS All-Stars avenge a loss to Liga MX in the 2024 MLS All-Star Game. The MLS All-Stars won three of the four previous editions of their matchup with Liga MX.
"What I told them is that we have quality when we have the ball if we can do combinations, being together, get the good relations and interactions that will help us to break the opponent," Estevez said.
"When we had the ball, it was less instruction and more about being a unit and being compact."
The Liga MX All-Stars threatened early on, but were often denied by Austin FC goalie Brad Stuver. Those heroics included a one-handed diving block in the 19th minute. But Liga MX goalie Luis Malagon also stood strong between the posts, keeping the game scoreless until the 28th minute.

Bouanga started that sequence by leading a breakaway into the Liga MX box. He blasted a shot on net, but the attempt was denied by Malagon. Bouanga regained control on the left flank and fired a pass back toward the far post.
Surridge -- who is tied with Messi with a league-leading 18 goals this season -- jumped into the area and headed a point-blank range shot past Malagon for first blood.
Bouanga and Surridge each earned separate attempts about five minutes later. Bouanga drilled the right post with a volley, while star defender Sergio Ramos blocked Surridge's shot.
The MLS All-Stars finally doubled their lead with Baribo beat goalie Kevin Mier in the 51st minute. Ross cut off several Liga MX defenders with a ball into the box for Baribo on that play. The Philadelphia Union striker let the ball roll onto his right foot and finished with a shot just inside the left post.
Mora cut the deficit in half by beating Minnesota United goalie in the 65th minute, but White went on to add the clincher in the 80th. Carles Gil gained control in transition, weaved through defenders and found fellow midfielder Cristian Espinoza on the left flank to lead that attack.
Espinoza proceed to tap a pass ahead for Zinckernagel, who spotted White about eight yards in front of the net. The All-Star striker finished with a one-touch shot off Liga MX All-Star Brian Rodriguez and into the net.
The MLS regular-season slate will continue with six games Friday. Orlando City will host the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Columbus, Ohio. The New England Revolution will host CF Montreal at the same time in Foxborough, Mass.
Messi and Alba, who were the leading vote getters for their positions, could be open to one-game suspensions for not playing in the MLS All-Star game. Their fifth-place Herons will host first-place FC Cincinnati at 7:15 p.m. Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Jaire Alexander and Odafe Oweh are among 36 Baltimore Ravens who will be restricted or unrestricted free agents in the 2026 NFL offseason We're entering Week 2 of training camp, and while the Ravens are focused on daily improvements, it's not a crime to look ahead to what could be a completely different-looking roster at key positions. Baltimore added 11 players in the NFL draft and still has a huge Super Bowl window thanks to an MVP candidate at quarterback, elite talent, and several critical positions. Regardless of the outcome of this upcoming season, that window could be altered, with the Ravens having 36 players who'll either test restricted or unrestricted free agency during the 2026 NFL off-season. Several key factors include a pending contract extension for Lamar Jackson, Tyler Linderbaum, and Kyle Hamilton, as well as the contract status of all three tight ends. Odafe Oweh is one of the biggest names on the list, but the offense could look drastically different with the top three tight ends all set for unrestricted free agency and multiple big-name edge rushers. With Week 2 of training camp set to begin, we're previewing the 36 Ravens who'll be free agents next spring. CB Jaire Alexander In a move that can only be described as shocking, the Ravens agreed to a contract with former Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander. The move came hours after quarterback Lamar Jackson confirmed that he called his former college teammate and asked the Ravens to "go get him." The one-year deal with Alexander is worth a maximum of $6 million, including $2 million in incentives. LB William Kwenkeu- Restricted Free Agent OL Joe Noteboom --UFA TE Mark Andrews- UFA The 31-year-old Andrews had his $4 million option bonus picked up, and short of some miracle, this is expected to be his final season in Baltimore with Isaiah Likely ascending. RB Keaton Mitchell- Restricted Free Agent The shifty running back spent the 2024 season working his way back from a torn ACL. Edge Rusher Malik Hamm- Restricted Free Agent Hamm spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve (ankle) but made his presence felt as a pass rusher last spring during OTAs and minicamps. Henry's 14 rushing touchdowns were tied for the second-most in the league, only behind the Bills' James Cook (15). OLB Kyle Van Noy- UFA The 35-year-old Van Noy keeps fighting off Father Time, but 2025 could be his final season in Baltimore. Van Noy made his first Pro Bowl last season after posting 12.5 sacks. OL Tyler Linderbaum- UFA The Ravens declined to pick up Linderbaum's fifth-year option, but still want to sign their star center to a long-term contract. Since he's been to multiple Pro Bowls, Linderbaum would have cost $23.4 million for the 2026 season. On Wednesday, just one day before the deadline, DeCosta exercised Hamilton's option, while the team declined Linderbaum's option, hoping to agree to a long-term deal. One primary reason for declining Linderbaum is that it would have made him the highest-paid center in the NFL. The fifth-year option values are the same for all offensive linemen rather than being broken down by position (C/G/T). Linderbaum essentially would have had a fifth-year option comparable to that of the top left or right tackles in the NFL, making him the highest-paid player at his position ahead of Creed Humphrey and others. DB Ar'Darius Washington- UFA After signing his free agent tender, Washington entered the 2025 season in a contract year, putting himself in a position for a payday. A torn Achilles will prevent Washington from duplicating his overall statistics. FB Patrick Ricard- UFA The 32-year-old fullback could take things on a year-to-year basis. OLB Odafe Oweh- UFA Oweh logged 5.0 sacks in two of his first three seasons since being selected by the Ravens in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Baltimore didn't deliver a long-term contract extension last summer, and that fueled his production for last season as the former Penn State pass rusher finished with the second-most sacks on the Ravens behind Kyle Van Noy (13.5) and tied with Detroit's Za'Darius Smith for No. 16 in the NFL. Baltimore picked up Oweh's fifth-year option before last season, putting him on the books for a $13,251,000 salary cap hit. In 2024, Oweh tallied 39 tackles (25 solo), 10.0 sacks, and one forced fumble across 17 regular-season games. OLB David Ojabo- UFA The former Michigan pass rusher has one year left on his rookie deal and no guaranteed money. Ojabo saw action in 13 games last season, but he only has four sacks in three NFL seasons. Likely recorded 126 receiving yards during the playoffs, and he had a career-best 42 catches for 477 yards and six touchdowns. Likely will play out the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, but Baltimore will have a decision to make. MLB Rumors: Cardinals Could Move Eight-Time All-Star Before Trade Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The third base market could get a major shakeup ahead of the MLB trade deadline if the St. Louis Cardinals are able to find common ground regarding Nolan Arenado. The eight-time All-Star was the subject of major trade rumors involving a few teams during the offseason. Teams like the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox reportedly had varying levels of interest in making a deal with St. Louis. Ultimately, Arenado stayed up. That could change ahead of Thursday's MLB trade deadline, and if that does happen, it could have a major impact on the market. (Photo by) More Mark Feinsand said there's renewed interest in Arenado among teams looking for third-base help, and St. Louis could trade him before the buzzer. This seems to either be a change of course or counter to past reporting, as a previous report indicated the Cardinals planned to keep Arenado. Regardless, Feinsand offers one very important caveat: "The Cardinals will have to get approval from Arenado, who possesses a full no-trade clause and can veto any trade -- which he did in December after the Cardinals and Astros had agreed to a trade to send the eight-time All-Star to Houston." Quite frankly, it's hard to conceptualize what sort of deal it would take to get an Arenado deal done. The 34-year-old is a long way from the player who was a perennial All-Star in Colorado. Arenado has been on an undeniable downturn, especially if you take out his 2022 season in which he finished third in MVP voting. His .237 batting average would be a career low, as would his .669 OPS, which is not just a sharp drop-off from his career mark (.847) but also a pretty significant 50-point drop from last year -- which was his career-worst until that point. Then there's the contract. He's got two years left after this one on an eight-year, $260 million deal he signed with Colorado. As Feinsand notes, the Rockies are paying some of the deferred money, and the Cardinals could also help pay off some of the deal. Even so, that no-trade protection looms large, meaning teams would really have to thread the needle to get something done. Perhaps the chance to play meaningful baseball would open up Arenado's market. The Cardinals were a painfully mediocre 54-53, 3 1/2 games out of National League wild-card contention entering Monday. Sovereignty continues his reign among 3-year-olds with Jim Dandy win
July 28 (UPI) -- In a busy weekend of racing, Sovereignty stayed a step ahead in the ongoing 3-year-old battles with a handy victory in Saturday's Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, while Lovesick Blues captured a spot in the Breeders' Cup Sprint and Nysos took another step toward a spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic. There's more, too so let's roll: Classic Sovereignty remains firmly entrenched atop the 3-year-old division after Saturday's seemingly effortless addition of the Grade II Jim Dandy to his victories in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Fountain of Youth. The Godolphin homebred colt by Into Mischief shrugged off a field composed of Derby and Belmont third-place Baeza, Arkansas Derby winner and Preakness Stakes third-place Sandman, Ohio Derby winner Mo Plex and Peter Pan Stakes winner Hill Road. Only Baeza was competitive, moving to challenge for the lead on the stretch turn, but then unable to keep pace though the final furlong, finishing second, 1 length back. The others were in a different race. "I just trusted my horse," jockey Junior Alvarado said. "I knew he'd pick it up when I asked him to." Trainer Bill Mott indicated before the race the Jim Dandy was a stepping stone to the Grade I Travers Stakes. He could meet another old rival in that 1 1/4-mile race as Journalism prepped last weekend with a win in the Grade I Haskell at Monmouth. Alvarado said Sovereignty should have no trouble stretching back out from Saturday's 1 1/8 miles to the 1 1/4 miles of the Travers. "We haven't asked him to do much to win this race," Alvarado said. While the 3-year-olds continue their intramural scrum, things are shifting among the older runners. The weekend's biggest revelation was Nysos, who rallied to an easy win in Saturday's $300,000 Grade II San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. The Nyquist colt wasn't asked for his best by jockey Flavien Prat and still won by 2 3/4 lengths from Mirahmadi, giving trainer Bob Baffert the 1-2 finish. Nysos was one of the hottest commodities on the 2024 Triple Crown trail before being sidelined with physical issues. Baffert said the Grade I Pacific Classic might be next. Distaff Running Away came after pacesetter Fondly turning for home in Saturday's $252,000 Grade III Monmouth Oaks, breezed by and ran on to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Fondly held second. A Gun Runner filly, Running Away stopped the timer at 1:46.26 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track, with Victor Espinoza in the irons for trainer Wesley Ward. She has won four of her last five starts with a eighth-place finish in the Grade I Ashland at Keeneland in the middle of that string. Literate found her best stride in the final furlong of Saturday's $150,000 (Canadian) Grade III Trillium Stakes at Woodbine and outfinished the odds-on favorite, Caitlinhergrtness for a 1/2-length score. A 5-year-old Oscar Performance mare, Literate ran 1 1/16 miles on the all-weather track in 1:43.23, bagging her first graded stakes victory. Sahin Civaci rode for trainer Martin Drexler. Turf Formidable Man stuck close to the pace and close to the rail in Sunday's $250,000 Grade II Eddie Read Stakes and Del Mar, closed to take the lead in the stretch and won going away, with long-time leader Cabo Spirit hanging on for the place. Stay Hot was third as Formidable Man finished the 1 1/8 miles on firm turf in 1:48.55. Michael McCarthy noted the Breeders' Cup is at Del Mar again and that Formidable Man now has five win from five starts where the turf meets the surf. "He loves Del Mar," McCarthy said. "We'll space his races out and play it by ear." Filly & Mare Turf Daisy Flyer came flying through the final furlong of Saturday's $175,000 Lake George Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Saratoga and nailed pacesetting favorite Classic Q by a neck at the wire. Reining Flowers was a close third as Daisy Flyer finished 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:40.19. Jose Lezcano rode for trainer Rusty Arnold and owner-breeder Calumet Farm. The Mshawish filly got her second win, following a third, beaten just a neck in the Grade III Herecomesthebride Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 1. On Saturday at Woodbine, Candy Quest rallied from next-last of eight to win the $150,000 (Canadian) Grade III Ontario Colleen for 3-year-old fillies, hit the front by the sixteenth pole and won by 1 3/4 lengths over Somethinabouther. A Connect filly, Canda Quest ran 1 mile on firm turf in 1:33.51, with Sahin Civaci riding for trainer Mark Casse. She was last seen finishing second in the tough Penn Oaks at Penn National. La Mehana swung out four-wide entering the stretch for the second time in Sunday's $250,000 Grade II Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga and left six rivals in her wake as she won by 8 3/4 lengths. The favorite, Bellezza, was best of the rest. La Mehana, a 6-year-old, French-bred mare, ran 1 1/2 miles on yielding turf in 2:30.54 with Flavien Prat up for trainer Miguel Clement. Sprint Lovesick Blues collared pacesetter Hejazi with a sixteenth of a mile to run in Saturday's $400,000 Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar and ran on to win by 1 3/4 lengths. The favorite, World Record, was third with an even effort. Lovesick Blues, a 7-year-old Grazen gelding who raced for a $28,000 claiming tag early in his career, finished 6 furlongs in 1:08.74 for jockey Geovanni Franco, picked up his first graded stakes win and earned a "Win and You're In" spot in the Breeders Cup Turf. Smoken Wicked pressed the pacesetting favorite, Macho Music, through the first few furlongs of Friday's $200,000 Grade II Amsterdam Stakes for 3-year-olds at Saratoga, disposed of that one and drew off to win by 5 3/4 lengths. Gunmetal and Gate to Wire filled out the trifecta, while Macho Music got home fourth. Smoken Wicked, a Louisiana-bred colt by Bobby's Wicked One, ran 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:15.64. Patriot Spirit, the odds-on favorite, asserted himself in the stretch run of Saturday's $100,000 Reigh Count Stakes at Colonial Downs, drawing off to win by 4 lengths from Inveigled. The 4-year-old Constitution colt, with Mychel Sanchez riding for trainer Michael Campbell, toured 7 furlongs on a fast strip in 1:21.01. Filly & Mare Sprint Alani dueled to the lead in Saturday's $100,000 Love Sign Stakes at Colonial Downs, shook clear passing the quarter pole and ran on to win by 1 3/4 lengths over Happy Clouds. The favorite, Top Gun Girl, faded to finish next-last. Alani, a 4-year-old Competitive Edge filly, ran 6 furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.25 toting Andy Hernandez. Turf Sprint Pushiness jumped right to the lead in Saturday's $100,000 Daisycutter Handicap for fillies and mares at Del Mar, opened a daylight advantage and held on by a nose over late-running Uncorked. A 4-year-old Kantharos filly, Pushiness ran 5 furlongs on firm turf in 56.88 under Juan Hernandez. It was the fifth win for the Michael McCarthy trainee.
