August 5 marks six years since the abrogation of Article 370, which rendered Jammu and Kashmir of its statehood, converting the former state into three Union Territories.
Ever since the abrogation, the majority of politicians and leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have been demanding the restoration of statehood. The demand for reinstating the statehood of J-K has intensified after the Omar Abdullah government was formed, following the assembly elections.
As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) extended greetings on the abrogation day, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called for a 15-minute blackout to mark a protest against the move taken by the government of India in 2019.
Live Events
In 2019, on this day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled a resolution in Rajya Sabha to scrap Article 370 and launched a scathing attack against opposition parties, including National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and Congress, accusing the "three families of looting" Jammu and Kashmir.
Shah had said, "Under the umbrella of Article 370, three families looted Jammu and Kashmir for years. Leader of Opposition (Ghulam Nabi Azad) said Article 370 connected Jammu and Kashmir to India, but it's not true. Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Jammu and Kashmir Instrument of Accession on October 27 1947. Article 370 came in 1954."
The scrapped Article 370 of the Indian Constitution gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and barred people from the rest of India from buying land in the former state. The article also limited the powers of the Parliament to make laws for Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP calls for boycott of Kamal Haasan's movies over ‘sanatana dharma' remarks
The Tamil Nadu BJP on Tuesday urged people to boycott movies featuring the actor-politician Kamal Haasan, in a response to his comments on 'sanatana dharma' made at a charity event held on Sunday. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan said that only education has the power to change the nation and it is the only weapon that can break the shackles of dictatorship and Sanatana. (PTI) BJP state secretary Amar Prasad Reddy posted a video message onto his social media accounts, wherein he said: 'Earlier it was Udhayanidhi Stalin. Now, it is Kamal who wants to destroy sanatana dharma. Let's teach them a lesson.' 'I appeal to every Hindu to not watch Kamal's movies, not even on OTT. If we do this, they will not share such irresponsible statements that hurt millions of Hindus on public platforms,' he added. At the event on Sunday organised by Agaram Foundation, a non-profit run by fellow Tamil actor Suriya, Kamal Haasan said: 'Only education has the power to change the nation. It is the only weapon that can break the shackles of dictatorship and Sanatana.' The actor was referring to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which the ruling DMK wants abolished. Haasan also said that a central exam for medical admissions was a barrier for marginalised students. 'Do not take any other weapon in your hand. It isn't possible to win with any other weapon because ignorant majoritarianism will defeat you,' added Haasan, who recently became a member of the Rajya Sabha after being nominated by the DMK after his party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) entered into an alliance with them ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year. The controversy around the actor's comments recalled the row that erupted in 2023 around deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's call for the eradication of sanatana dharma, wherein he said: 'Just like dengue, mosquitoes, malaria, or coronavirus need to be eradicated, we have to eradicate Sanatana.' Historically, the DMK has considered sanatana dharma to be a centuries-old issue which compounds caste and gender-based discrimination. This point has found itself echoed by the writings of BR Ambedkar. Haasan's former co-actor Khusboo Sundar, who was recently appointed vice president of the state BJP, said that Haasan's comments were unnecessary. 'I feel Kamal sir speaking at an event like this about education and bringing in Sanatana was absolutely uncalled for, unwanted,' Sundar told PTI. 'You could have just stressed on the importance of education because we all agree education is your biggest weapon. Speaking there about Sanatana was absolutely wrong because nobody is including education with Sanatana...,' he added. Haasan has not personally issued any response to the BJP's criticism, as of the time of going to print. Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson A Saravanan said that the entire right wing was enraged with Haasan's speech. 'Kamal Haasan has hit the bull's eye. They (the right wing) don't know how to react. They are not able to attack him and know his powers of amplification,' he said.

Army, with old newspaper clip, takes a dig at US
NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Tuesday waded into the ongoing war of words between India and the US over tariffs and Russian oil, sharing an old newspaper clip detailing decades of military support from Washington to Pakistan in the run-up to the 1971 war. The Army's Eastern Command at Kolkata posted on 'X' a newspaper clip from Aug 5, 1971, highlighting the article's headline: "US arms worth $2 billion shipped to Pakistan since 1954". "This day that year build-up of war - Aug 5, 1971. #KnowFacts," the post said. The newspaper article mentioned the then defence production minister V C Shukla telling RS that both the US and China had supplied Pakistan with arms at "concessional rates or throw-away prices". The French sold Pakistan arms against hard cash with "no concessions", while USSR had denied supplying weapons to India's western adversary. "Our estimate of the value of US arms shipments to Pakistan since they entered into the arms pact in 1954 was $2 billion," Shukla had said. Army's dig comes after MEA hit back at US following Trump's threat to India over its purchase of Russian oil. TNN

How PM Modi And HM Amit Shah Fortified India's Internal Security In The Last 2,258 Days
With terrorism in J&K down 70%, Naxalism nearing extinction, and a modernised justice system, their legacy is one of resilience and progress On August 5, 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah etched his name in history as India's longest-serving Home Minister, a tenure spanning 2,258 days marked by transformative reforms and an unrelenting focus on strengthening the nation's internal security. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's strategic stewardship, India has undergone a seismic shift in its approach to internal security, confronting entrenched challenges head-on and fostering a safer, more cohesive nation. From the bold abrogation of Article 370 to the near-eradication of Naxalism, the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and robust anti-terror measures, their policies have reshaped India's security landscape. This article weaves together their key achievements, grounded in data and statistics, to showcase how their vision has fortified India's internal resilience. The revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, stands as a defining moment in India's modern history. Under HM Amit Shah's stewardship at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Modi government dismantled the special status that had granted Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) a separate constitution and flag, integrating the region fully into India's constitutional framework. Reorganised into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh—this move ushered in uniform governance and access to national laws, dismantling a system HM Amit Shah described as having 'sown the seeds of separatism" in the Kashmir Valley. The impact was transformative. Official data reveals a 70% decline in terrorism in J&K, with stone-pelting incidents, once a daily menace, fading into obscurity. Between 2019 and 2024, terror-related incidents plummeted, with 690 incidents resulting in 262 soldiers and 171 civilians killed—a significant improvement from the pre-2019 era of rampant militancy. The abrogation opened doors for J&K residents to access national programmes like reservations and the right to education, previously restricted. HM Amit Shah's vision of 'Naya Kashmir" has taken root, with booming tourism and agriculture sectors driving local prosperity. The Supreme Court's affirmation of the abrogation's constitutionality in December 2023, coupled with Amit Shah's oversight of the delimitation process, paved the way for assembly elections, advancing the restoration of statehood by September 2024. The Modi government's sustained efforts have undeniably shifted J&K towards peace and development. Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA): A Humane Approach to Citizenship In December 2019, the Modi-Shah duo introduced the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a landmark law granting expedited citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minorities—Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians—from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India before December 31, 2014. HM Amit Shah framed the CAA as a humanitarian gesture, emphasising that it protects those fleeing religious persecution without revoking anyone's citizenship. The law's implementation, though delayed by protests, was carefully orchestrated by 2024, with the MHA addressing potential backlash to ensure smooth execution. By distinguishing genuine refugees from illegal immigrants, the CAA aligns with India's ethos of inclusivity while bolstering national security. HM Amit Shah's firm stance against undocumented immigration, particularly in cities like Mumbai, underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding India's borders and identity. Overhauling the Criminal Justice System: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita A cornerstone of HM Amit Shah's tenure has been the overhaul of India's colonial-era criminal justice system. In 2023, the Modi government introduced three transformative laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—replacing the outdated Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Indian Evidence Act. Effective from July 1, 2024, these laws mark a shift towards a 'justice-first" framework, prioritising citizens' rights over punitive measures. The reforms are sweeping: terrorism, organised crime, and economic offences are now explicitly defined, closing long-standing legal loopholes. The BNSS introduced strict timelines for investigations, arrests, chargesheets, and trials, ensuring swift justice delivery. Forensic investigations and electronic FIRs have enhanced transparency, while community service for petty crimes reflects India's philosophical roots. The replacement of colonial-era sedition with 'deshdroha" (offences against the nation) aligns the legal framework with national sovereignty. HM Amit Shah described these changes as the 'biggest in 160 years", designed to endure for a century. With over 18,000 courts and 1,200 jails equipped with video conferencing and extensive police training, the reforms have modernised India's justice system, making it both tech-savvy and citizen-centric. Anti-Terror Initiatives: Banning PFI and Operations Sindoor and Mahadev The Modi-Shah administration's zero-tolerance approach to terrorism has delivered measurable results. In September 2022, the government banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, dismantling a network linked to radicalisation and terror funding. Over 1,800 arrests and 240 cases across states crippled the PFI's operations, sending a resolute message against anti-national activities. Operations Sindoor and Mahadev further exemplify this proactive stance. In 2025, Operation Sindoor targeted terror masterminds in Pakistan, while Operation Mahadev neutralised those responsible for the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 25 tourists and a local. PM Modi's directive granting the armed forces 'complete operational freedom" ensured swift, precise retaliation, reinforcing India's resolve to dismantle terror networks both at home and abroad. Near-Eradication of Naxalism: A Declining Red Corridor Home Minister Amit Shah's aggressive campaign against left-wing extremism has brought Naxalism to the brink of extinction, with a target to eliminate it by March 31, 2026. Official data highlights a sharp decline in Naxal-related incidents, with over 9,000 militants surrendering in the Northeast and multiple peace accords signed. Encounters in Chhattisgarh in 2025, yielding weapons like INSAS rifles, have further weakened Naxal strongholds. HM Shah's strategy blends military precision with socio-economic development, addressing the root causes of extremism. Welfare programmes like PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, benefiting 81 crore people, and PMAY, providing 4 crore homes, have empowered marginalised communities, diminishing the appeal of Naxalism. Annual MHA meetings now prioritise insurgency-affected states, ensuring seamless coordination between central and state agencies. Border Security: Fencing India's Frontiers To curb illegal immigration and smuggling, the Modi-Shah government has prioritised fortifying India's borders. In 2024, HM Amit Shah announced plans to fence the 1,643-km India-Myanmar border, with surveys underway to secure this porous frontier. Efforts to strengthen the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border have focused on curbing illegal activities through enhanced surveillance. Strategic infrastructure, such as the Chidiyamod-BR Bet link road and a 9.5m observation tower in Kutch, has bolstered the Border Security Force's capabilities. These measures address HM Amit Shah's concerns about illegal immigration, ensuring national security while maintaining diplomatic ties. Police Modernisation and Northeast Peace Accords Home Minister Amit Shah's SMART Policing Mission, backed by Rs 8,200 crore between 2019 and 2024, has revolutionised India's police forces, enhancing sensitivity, mobility, accountability, and technology. The initiative equips forces to tackle emerging threats like cybercrime and 'digital arrests". In the Northeast, HM Amit Shah's leadership facilitated over nine peace accords, leading to the surrender of 9,000 militants and fostering stability in a historically volatile region. These efforts have not only strengthened security but also built bridges of trust and development. The abrogation of Article 370, the CAA, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, anti-terror initiatives, Naxal suppression, and border fencing reflect a vision of a secure, unified India. With terrorism in J&K down 70%, Naxalism nearing extinction, and a modernised justice system, their legacy is one of resilience and progress.
