PLAYER RATINGS | Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Bochum
The business end of the season. Eight games left, both Bayer Leverkusen and Bochum have things to play for – Leverkusen the title, Bochum relegation. Leverkusne laid down the gauntlet for Bayern with a 3-1 win against Bochum.
Whatever happened after Leverkusen's game against Stuttgart just before the international break, a switch was flicked and they were playing with a completely different aura and energy compared to before the break. Granted, this was against relegation fighting Bochum at home, but their combinations were smooth and they just looked deadly going forward.

However, they did struggle to create clear cut chances, Leverkusen were able to open the scoring through a long range effort from Aleix Garcia, but they wouldn't hold the lead for long. A Granit Xhaka head was diverted straight into the path of Giorgos Masouras, whose effort was saved by Lukas Hradecky, but the ball was not cleared properly and landed at the feet of Felix Passlack, whose effort from outside the box beat (only just), Hradecky.
The goal clearly rattled Leverkusen and knocked them out of their rhtym, but they limped to half-time.
In the second half, the hosts found their rhtym again and were fully in control as they tried to break Bochum down. The visitors did provide a few hairy moments with the pace of Gerrit Holtmann, but Leverkusen withheld them.
Leverkusen would take the lead when a Piero Hincapié cut back was bundled in by Victor Boniface, and any nerves surrounding this game being a potential banana skin were gone. Boniface thought he had a second later on in the half when he converted a Frimpong cutback, but he was fractionally offside in the build up to the goal. Leverkusen would get their third in the 88th minute when Exequiel Palacios thread pass is met by Amine Adli who slotted past Timo Horn.

Well, well, well.
Apart from the 20 minute spell at the end of the first half, as mentioned before this was a different Leverkusen compared to before the break. They have had the injection of confidence that they had been lacking for most of this season and you can clearly see that there is the belief that they can catch Bayern. On top of this, they did it without Florian Wirtz, who is by far their best player
The win for Leverkusen close the game to Bayern Munich to three points, at least for now, but the pressure is well on the Rekordmeister going forward. The fact that the gap is so small now, Ive got that feeling back, the feeling of excitement and not extistenal dread that the title race is well and truly over with. The next seven weeks are going to be very, very interesting.
Bayer Leverkusen:

Others: Amine Adli (6), Emiliano Buendia (-), Arthur (-), Robert Andrich (-)
Bochum:
Timo Horn (5), Felix Passlack (6), Tim Oermann (5), Ivan Ordets (5), Maximillian Wittek (5), Matus Bero (5), Ibrahim Sissoko (6), Tom Krauß (5), Gerrit Holtmann (6), Philipp Hofmann (5), Giorgos Masouras (5)
Others: Mortiz Broschinski (5), Myron Boadu (5), Dani de Wit (-)
GGFN Man of the Match: Exequiel Palacios (7)
When Leverkusen needed a creative outlet, Palacios provided that tonight. The Argentine's thread balls set up two of Die Werkself's goals and created the joint most chances in the game (four, via FotMob). In the base of Leverkusen's midfield, Palacios commanded play and helped mitigate the absence of Wirtz.

Boniface also deserves a shout out, as he has looked very lively in the past two games, Off the bench against Stuttgarr he helped with the comeback, while tonight he could of had two goals. If the Nigerian continues this form, he will once again be vaulebale for Leverkusen in the run in.

Bayer Leverkusen talent Kerim Alajbegovic joins RB Salzburg

Bayer Leverkusen talent Kerim Alajbegovic has joined Austrian side RB Salzburg for a reported €2m. The 17-year-old has signed a long-term contract until 2029. Bayer 04 meanwhile retain a buyback clause in the player's contract. Advertisement 'Kerim Alajbegovic will now take the next important step in his professional career in Austria,' said sporting director Simon Rolfes. 'We have high hopes for him and will follow his career closely.' Alajbegovic scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists in 26 games across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen's U19 team last season as they went on to lose the U19 final against local rivals FC Köln. In the UEFA Youth League, Alajbegovic scored three goals in six appearances. Upon joining RB Salzburg, Alajbegovic said: 'I am delighted that the transfer worked out, and I just can't wait to get started for FC Red Bull Salzburg. It's the right move for me, as it's well known that they have developed so many young players so well here in Salzburg. I want to develop here too. Other aims with my new club are playing at the highest possible level in European competition and winning the Austrian title.' GGFN | Daniel Pinder

Reactions: 'We fought to see the game through, with commitment and passion'

Niko Kovac (at the press conference): 'That was our best half at this tournament. I was very satisfied with the first period. We were sharp, we defended on the front foot and we put the opposition under stress. In addition to the two goals, we created two more huge opportunities for Serhou (editor's note: Guirassy) from which we could have scored another one or perhaps even two. Then we would have taken in a very comfortable lead at half-time. What was then important in the second-half was that we fought to see the game through, with commitment and with passion. The opposition had possession of the ball but no great chances. We had a few problems with balls in behind the defence. But okay. The main thing is that we won. We're now in the last eight, and that's more than we could've imagined. For us and for German football, it is a big thing that there are two clubs in the quarter-finals. Real Madrid are a great team with many good individual players. We're seeing the football from them that Xavi played in Leverkusen: very vertical and very quick. We're looking forward to the clash but we know we're outsiders. But in football, you have to play 90 minutes first. And if we put in the performance we did today, especially in the first period, we think we have a chance.' Serhou Guirassy (to DAZN): 'I think we had a very good first half. The second was slightly more difficult but we were mentally strong and won. We're therefore all happy this evening. I think I could have scored at least three goals. But I'm satisfied. The most important thing is winning the match. I'm expecting a very tough game against Real Madrid. We're prepared.' Inline Image Gregor Kobel (to BVB TV): 'It was a very good game from us in the first period. In the second half, it's sometimes normal for there to be a change of momentum because the opposition have nothing left to lose. We conceded a goal early on but then kept going brilliantly until the end. We didn't give much away – perhaps occasionally but I was then on hand. But I think that overall, it was a good performance from us. Now we have an amazing game against an outstanding opponent, who will definitely demand a lot from us. We'll have to hold our own, step on the gas and fight – and then we'll see.' Inline Image Niklas Süle (to BVB TV): 'The stadium, the pitch, the time and everything that went along with it was more the kind of thing that we're used to. It was not as boiling hot as in the first three matches. I think that for the most part, we played our best game of the tournament. We were well prepared. In the second half, we no longer applied pressure on the ball and didn't get out so well at the back. We had a bit of luck in one or two situations at that point. But we held our own well. Not everything is easy in a tournament. It is a great achievement to reach the last eight, especially when you also consider which teams have already been eliminated.' Transcribed by Boris Rupert

Liverpool stars respond after Quansah leaves for Leverkusen

Quansah's Exit Marks Emotional Chapter for Academy Graduate Amidst the flurry of arrivals, including the record-breaking deal for Florian Wirtz and notable additions like Freddie Woodman and Milos Kerkez, one departure has resonated differently. On Wednesday, Liverpool confirmed the transfer of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. It was a move long expected but still poignant. Advertisement Quansah, a product of the club's youth system, had always felt like a player on the brink. Though minutes were sparse under Slot, his performances when called upon suggested a defender capable of growing into a consistent top-flight presence. One such occasion came in the 2-1 win over Brighton in April 2024, a performance Alexis Mac Allister described as 'amazing.' That moment now stands as one of his final high points in a Liverpool shirt. Despite being underutilised, his departure is not without warmth. His farewell message on Instagram was heartfelt, a reflection of deep roots in the club he joined as a boy. Gakpo's Gesture Speaks for the Dressing Room In a modern football world oversaturated by performative goodbyes and PR-filtered tributes, Cody Gakpo's response stood out precisely because of its simplicity. A single fire emoji followed by a heart, posted in response to Quansah's message, said what it needed to. Respect, admiration and a silent nod from a teammate who had clearly taken notice. photo IMAGO Advertisement It is moments like these, quiet yet rich with meaning, that paint the real portrait of Liverpool's evolving squad. Behind the tactical analyses and transfer speculation lie human relationships and the passing of formative moments. Quansah leaves not with a sense of failure, but with the blessing of those he shared the pitch with. Liverpool's Evolving Shape Under Slot As Liverpool enter the second summer of significant transition, Quansah's departure is another signpost along the route to a redefined identity. While Gakpo remains firmly in the spotlight, serving as a link between the Klopp era and whatever form Slot's side takes next, others move on. Liverpool may not have seen the best of Jarell Quansah, but Leverkusen might. For now, the only comment from one of his closest teammates was two emojis. Somehow, that was enough.
