Demolitions return to Bab al-Nasr Cemetery
Bab al-Nasr Cemetery is one of Cairo's oldest, located opposite Islamic Cairo's Nasr Gate and falling within the bounds of historic Cairo as designated by UNESCO. Its wooden funerary structures are a rare and unique form of architecture. The site contains thousands of graves and tombs belonging to Sufi sheikhs and saints, as well as the Swiss Orientalist Johann Burckhardt (d. 1817). The cemetery also features several ornate mausoleums of wealthy families, and the mud-brick dome of Al-Sitt Zeinab al-Hanafiya (d. 940).
In 2024, the cemetery lost approximately 13,000 square meters of its total area as officials moved forward with plans to construct a parking garage and shopping center in its place. Today, it appears authorities are intent on erasing what remains of the cemetery — piece by piece.

Egypt's FM meets Burkina Faso leader on security, economic cooperation
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Burkina Faso leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, on Tuesday and delivered a written message from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi aimed at strengthening economic and security cooperation, the Egyptian foreign ministry said. On the security front, Abdelatty discussed the challenges Burkina Faso faces from the spread of terrorist groups in the Lake Chad and Sahel regions. He offered Egypt's expertise in counter-terrorism, outlining its comprehensive approach which extends beyond security to include developmental, economic, and intellectual dimensions. Abdelatty also pointed to the important role of Cairo's Al-Azhar in spreading moderate Islamic values through its educational and religious mission in Burkina Faso, and the continued acceptance of Burkinabe students at Al-Azhar University. During the meeting, the minister also expressed Egypt's appreciation for Burkina Faso's support for the Egyptian and African candidate for the post of UNESCO Director-General, and said he looked forward to continued mutual support in international organisations. For his part, President Traoré asked Abdelatty to convey his greetings and appreciation to President Sisi, praising Egypt's historical role in supporting African nations. He expressed his eagerness to open new avenues of cooperation and his readiness to provide all necessary facilities to enhance the Egyptian economic and investment presence in his country.

87 Members of Congress Calls on Trump-Vance Administration to Ensure Safe Return of Armenians to Artsakh
Yara Sameh The Armenian National Committee of America welcomed a powerful bipartisan Congressional call on Wednesday by 87 U.S. Representatives from across 24 states – representing over 66 million Americans – calling for the collective and protected return' of forcibly displaced Armenians to their homeland of Artsakh, in line with international law and support of just and lasting peace in the South Caucasus. 'This bipartisan Congressional letter sends the Administration a clear message: Any path to real regional peace needs to start with the collective, protected return of Armenians to Artsakh – certainly not the normalization of Azerbaijan's ethnic cleansing of indigenous Christians from their ancient homeland,' stated ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. 'Armenian American voters and our many allies are grateful to the Armenian Caucus leadership and every Member of Congress who stood up today for peace and justice – a message backed by international law and rooted in human rights,' he added. In the letter, led by Congressional Armenian Caucus co-chairs Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Brad Sherman (D-CA), and David Valadao (R-CA), lawmakers said: 'We urge you to engage all parties in this unresolved conflict to ensure the collective, protected, and dignified return of forcibly displaced Armenians to their indigenous homeland of Nagorno Karabakh. Taking this action is in direct accordance with international law and in pursuit of a just and lasting peace in the region.' The letter documents the consequences of Azerbaijan's 2023 blockade and military assault on Artsakh, which 'forcibly displaced the region's entire Christian Armenian population of 120,000 people.' It further details how, following the assault, Azerbaijan 'engaged in the systematic destruction of Christian Armenian cultural heritage sites,' and conducted 'the widespread ransacking and demolition of civilian property, and public infrastructure, in an attempt to deny the possibility of return.' Citing international precedents, the letter adds: 'The right of populations displaced by war to return to their homes is a fundamental principle of international law.' It also references a December 2023 International Court of Justice order compelling Azerbaijan to ensure the safe and secure return of Artsakh's Armenian population. The letter also urges the Administration to support the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno-Karabakh, a diplomatic measure adopted by the Swiss Parliament to 'establish an international negotiation platform to mediate a safe, secure and internationally guaranteed return of Armenians.' The Swiss initiative was prominently discussed during a standing-room-only Congressional briefing on July 10th, which brought together over 200 Capitol Hill staffers, human rights advocates, and policy experts. The event featured remarks from Swiss Parliamentarians Erich Vontobel and Lukas Reimann, Christian Solidarity International President Dr. John Eibner, and former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian. Mark Milosch, Republican Staff Director for Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), the Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission opened the event and ANCA Policy Director Alex Galitsky moderated a robust question and answer session. Over the past month, Armenian American advocates and supporters sent more than 40,000 emails and calls, through ANCA national, regional, and local platforms, urging legislators to co-sign the letter. Moreover, ANCA's Leo Sarkisian and Maral Melkonian Avetisyan summer interns visited over 400 Congressional offices weekly, providing fact sheets and making the case for a U.S.-backed right of return policy for Artsakh genocide survivors. In the letter, the lawmakers also reaffirmed past U.S. commitments, citing testimony from Assistant Secretary of State Jim O'Brien, who stated: 'We have urged Azerbaijan to ensure all ethnic Armenians who have departed Nagorno Karabakh are guaranteed a safe, dignified, and sustainable return, should they so choose, with their rights and security guaranteed.' The Congressional letter concluded with a strong appeal: 'We look forward to your response, and to the opportunity to work with you to promote a just, durable, and dignified peace in the region that ensures the fundamental rights of displaced Armenians to return to their indigenous homeland without fear of renewed violence and persecution.' FM thanks Burkina Faso for backing Egypt's candidacy for top UNESCO post
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty thanked Burkina Faso for backing Egypt's Khaled al-Enany's candidacy for the post of UNESCO director general. Such support reflects confidence in the competence of the Egyptian candidate as the African candidate whose electoral vision is in line with the aspirations of all African countries, Abdelatty said during a meeting on Tuesday with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, at the start of his visit to Ouagadougou, the second leg of his current West African trip. Underlining the importance Egypt attaches to strengthening bilateral relations with Burkina Faso, Abdelatty said he looks forward to launching direct communication channels between the business communities in both countries. He highlighted the success stories of Egyptian companies operating in Burkina Faso, expressing Egypt's willingness to expand cooperation and transfer relevant expertise in the infrastructure, energy, mining, construction, and cotton industries. Abdelatty said he is leading a high-level delegation of 30 businessmen and representatives of major Egyptian companies from the public and private sectors to the sisterly African country, which reflects a strong desire to elevate bilateral cooperation. Abdelatty and Traoré discussed the progress made in implementing the outcomes of Burkina Faso's foreign minister's visit to Cairo in November 2024. He reiterated Egypt's full support for Burkina Faso's counterterrorism efforts, reaffirming respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also stressed Egypt's readiness to provide all forms of support to help Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism. Abdelatty also highlighted the vital role played by Al-Azhar Al-Sharif to promote the values of tolerance and moderate religious discourse in Burkina Faso. The two sides mulled ways to enhance coordination between Egypt and Burkina Faso at various regional and international forums. They also exchanged views on a raft of regional issues of common concern, especially the situation in the Sahel region and West Africa, given the mounting challenges related to the spread of terrorism and organized crime, which requires bolstering bilateral cooperation and consultation to confront these challenges and maintain regional security and stability. The two foreign ministers concluded the meeting by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for launching a mechanism for joint political consultations. Abdelatty embarked on a five-nation tour of West Africa on Monday, leading a high-level business delegation in a push to bolster economic ties and deepen security cooperation across a region facing significant challenges. The tour, which will also include stops in Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Senegal, kicked off in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, where Abdelatty held a series of meetings with top Nigerian officials and the regional ECOWAS bloc, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
