Kajol felt very alone on the sets of the superhit film 'Ishq.' Were Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla to blame?

Time of India5 days ago

Indra Kumar's 1997 directorial Ishq stands as one of the most commercially successful films of its time, making a powerful impact at the Indian box office. Featuring a star-studded cast that included Aamir Khan, Kajol, Juhi Chawla, and Ajay Devgn, the movie was widely appreciated for its vibrant comedy, catchy music, and high-energy performances. But what many may not realize is the lengthy and emotionally layered journey behind its creation—a process that stretched across 300 demanding days of filming.
In a recent conversation with
Mashable India,
Kajol opened up about her experiences during the making of Ishq. She shared how, during the shoot, she often found herself alone on set. Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, who had a long-standing camaraderie, were typically engrossed in their own group dynamics along with director Indra Kumar.
Their bond created a tight trio, while Kajol, despite her efforts to socialize, frequently ended up by herself. Over time, this sense of solitude allowed her to form a stronger bond with her co-star Ajay Devgn, who was also somewhat removed from the others. Eventually, Kajol found herself mostly isolated, especially on days when she simply didn't feel like engaging in small talk.

'Aamir was very friendly with the director, and so was Juhi, so these three were a close-knit group, and then there was Ajay and me. And eventually, it was just me. There were certain days on set when I was not willing to talk to anybody' she told the magazine.
Reflecting on the reason for this emotional distance, Kajol explained that the exhaustive nature of the film's shoot contributed heavily. Spending nearly 10 hours every day for close to a year, working on the same project with the same people, naturally wore on her. Despite being outgoing by nature, she admitted there were many moments when she preferred silence over social interaction. Even someone with an extroverted personality needs moments of stillness, she reflected—a truth that became clear during those extended shooting hours.
Ishq, which translates to 'Love,' is a Hindi-language romantic comedy-drama infused with action and emotion—a genre popularly known as "masala" in Indian cinema. It not only brought together four major stars but also featured talents like Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, and Mohan Joshi in memorable supporting roles. With music composed by Anu Malik, the film was released on 28 November 1997 and ranked as the third highest earner at the box office that year.
While critics offered a mix of reviews—applauding the film's humor, music, visual appeal, and acting while pointing out weaknesses in its storyline and screenplay—audiences embraced it wholeheartedly. The story followed the contrasting lives of two friends, Ajay and Raja, as they fall for women from vastly different social spheres.
On the work front, Kajol will next be seen in the mythological horror movie 'Maa'. The film continues the narrative set within the Shaitan Universe, unfolding a gripping tale about a mother's fierce struggle to protect her child from dark, otherworldly forces.
Wrapped in a haunting mix of emotion and suspense, it explores the depth of maternal courage in the face of supernatural danger. Production was completed earlier in 2025, with the makers unveiling the first look poster to much anticipation. The movie is slated for a multilingual theatrical release on 27 June 2025, hitting screens in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.

WATCH: Shreyas Iyer gets ‘clean bowled' by his mother while playing cricket in living room

With experts advocating for Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in India's ongoing Test series against England, the batter was seen having a relaxing time with his family in their home, playing cricket with his mother. In a video shared by Punjab Kings, Iyer's IPL franchise, the PBKS captain was facing deliveries from his mother in the living room with one delivery even breaching his defence. 'Only time SARPANCH won't mind getting bowled!,' Punjab Kings posted on X, sharing the video. His mother gleefully celebrated as she shouted 'out' with the video ending soon after. Shreyas and his parents share a pretty comfortable bond with his parents taking pride in narrating the pranks their children play on them to visitors. When The Indian Express visited their home once, the father spoke of how Shreyas was in the habit of fooling them on phone. He once faked an English accent to check if his father was traveling to the UK to watch his son play a county game. When his mother is in the kitchen, Shreyas's 'what's cooking' inquiry is unique: 'Aaj kya bigaad rahi ho (what meal are you spoiling today)'. But still Shreyas might be the only Indian cricketer who still gets dropped to the airport by both his parents. Only time SARPANCH won't mind getting bowled! 😂♥️ — Punjab Kings (@PunjabKingsIPL) June 30, 2025 Meanwhile, there were questions raised over Iyer's exclusion from India's extensive 18-member squad announced in May, and the situation sparked more questions about the 30-year-old's red-ball future at the international level. Iyer was in blistering form in the IPL, leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish with his best season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at a 50-plus average and a staggering 175.07 strike rate with 39 sixes. Iyer also had a productive Ranji Trophy season besides leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win in December 2024. In nine First Class matches, including an Irani Cup triumph, Iyer aggregated 699 runs with two centuries and three fifties. However, that would not be enough to make a comeback to the Test squad for Iyer, who last represented India during the 2024 home series against England. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had reasoned that there was no room currently for Iyer in the scheme of things despite his solid form at the domestic level. 'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him on the Test Team,' he said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai when announcing the Test squad in late May.

"Ab aayega Captain Cool powder, oil, deodorant": Fans imagine the wackiest products Dhoni could launch

As news broke that former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has filed a trademark application for the phrase 'Captain Cool', social media lit up with a flurry of hilarious and surprisingly informed reactions. The term, famously linked to Dhoni's unshakeable calm on the cricket field, is now set to become official property. According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, Dhoni's application, filed on June 5 and listed under Class 41 (sports training, coaching, and facilities), was accepted and advertised on June 16. While the trademark is focused on sports services, that didn't stop netizens from imagining a full-blown product universe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Photos Captured the Exact Wrong Moment Read More Undo 'Ab aayega Captain Cool powder, oil, deodorant,' joked one user, summing up the mood online. — Being_Humor (@Being_Humor) Live Events On X (formerly Twitter), another user cheekily imagined a lineup of Captain Cool-branded underwear, condoms, and slippers, before clarifying that the registration is strictly for sports-related services: 'nothing cheeky like that just yet!' — ramnit1983 (@ramnit1983) Another user weighed in on the trend of celebrities trademarking fan-given nicknames: 'Next he'll trademark Thala.
