Jase Summy adds Western Amateur, the 'biggest win of my life,' to Walker Cup resumé
Like James, Fang is already on the U.S. Walker Cup team that will compete at Cypress Point this September. So, too, are Jackson Koivun, Michael La Sasso and Preston Stout, which leaves five spots still up for grabs.
But on Saturday afternoon at Skokie Country Club, Jase Summy entered the chat.
Summy, a rising senior at Oklahoma, dominated Fang, 6 and 5, to win the 123rd edition of the Western Amateur and tie the championship record for largest margin of victory in a final, equaling 6-and-5 marks by Phelps B. Hoyt (1901 over Bruce D. Smith) and John Klauk (2002 over Adam Rubinson).
'This is the biggest win of my life – by far,' Summy said. 'I knew my game was there, but I hadn't quite broken through. Today, I did.'
Fang, ranked third in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, took just one hole against Summy, whom he grew up playing junior golf against in Texas. Fresh off a 19-hole victory over Florida's Zack Swanwick, Summy won five of the last six to end things before the 14th hole.
'It was a good week,' Fang said. 'Stroke play went great, and I was proud to co-medal. I did my best to stay focused, but I got a little tired and a little loose near the end. It didn't go my way, but that's golf.'
Summy is projected to rise to seventh in the world, and with a T-3 at the Southern Amateur and T-12 at the Northeast Amateur this summer following a junior season that included a win and six other top-10s, he should feel confident about getting the call for Cypress. The final five Walker Cuppers are named after the U.S. Amateur, which begins a week from Monday at Olympic Club in San Francisco.
With his win, Summy also received a sponsor exemption into next summer's NV5 Invitational, the Korn Ferry Tour stop outside of Chicago.
'This was a long, tough week,' Summy added. 'I prepared the right way, mentally and physically. I know I'm on the right path.'

Her coach and caddie for the week, Alejandro Larrazabal, won the British Amateur at Royal Porthcawl in 2002. "My first three, four holes were really rough," said Martin Sampedro. "There was no way I was getting two on 1, it's a par 4. Then the first four holes, with perfect conditions are already so hard, so I knew it was going to be a tough beginning. "And then just managed to keep calm and just hole a couple putts, and then I started to see the lines better ... it was definitely a good birdie stretch on the back nine." The list of recent Smyth Salver winners is packed with stars. The award, given to the low amateur at the AIG Women's British Open, has served as a strong indicator of future success, with names like Danielle Kang, Georgia Hall, Leona Maguire, Jeeno Thitikul, Ko, and most recently, Lottie Woad, receiving the honor. It's been a massive summer for Martin Sampedro, who won both the British Women's Amateur and European Ladies' Amateur Championship in Germany. Dez Bryant, Roc Nation take issue with Jerry Jones
The recent Jerry Jones word potato salad regarding his direct negotiations with linebacker Micah Parsons included a gratuitous slap at former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant and his agent, Jay-Z. Via Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Jones had this to say about Bryant and Jay-Z: '[W]hen we have a problem with the player, the agent is nowhere to be found. Jay-Z said that Dez would make all meetings. Jay-Z and I negotiated the contract, spent hours. He said, 'Anybody in my organization is on time.' He said, 'My office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So, they will be on time.' And what did I say? I said, 'I'm going to call you [when I have a problem].' He quit taking my call.' Bryant responded on Twitter, with an all-caps warning for Jerry. (We've edited it, so that we're not screaming at your eyeballs.) "Jerry Jones," Bryant said, "I don't think it's smart to mention my name. I kept quiet about a lot of unfair shit. On some G shit. We can have story time if that's what we are doing." Jay-Z's sports agency, Roc Nation, issued a separate statement that takes issue with the claim that Jay-Z stopped taking Jerry's calls. (Again, we've edited it from the all-caps tweet.) "In 2015, at the 21 Club, on a napkin, Jerry Jones, Juan Perez, Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter, and Stephen Jones negotiated a five-year, $70 million deal, which included a $45 million guarantee and a $20 million signing bonus for Dez Bryant. At the time, it was the second-largest contract for a wide receiver in NFL history. "The claim that Mr. Carter or Roc Nation representatives did not return a call from Jerry Jones is not only a false statement, but it's also a comical one." Setting aside the question of how Jay-Z was directly negotiating NFL contracts without being licensed by the NFLPA to do so, the currently salient point is this. Jerry Jones, in trying to put out the fire arising from Parsons requesting a trade, may have accidentally turned the hose on a couple of hornets' nests. We'll sit back and wait to see if he gets stung.
